Emergency orbital decompression: a reprieve from blindness.

Orbital decompression to treat progressive loss of vision owing to long-term hormonal disease is a well-documented curative procedure. Over the past four years, two patients suffering from acute visual problems, owing to trauma and infection, have rapidly deteriorated to a no light perception visual level. In these two instances, vision was restored by timely orbital decompression.

Blindness and paraplegia in severe childhood hypertension.

3 children with severe renal hypertension and bilateral infarction of the optic nerves are described. 1 patient also had a transverse myelopathy. Such complications may perhaps be prevented by earlier detection of hypertension and gradual reduction of blood-pressure.

Ipsilateral blindness: a complication of carotid endarterectomy.

We report on three patients in whom ipsilateral blindness developed following carotid endarterectomy. Fundoscopic examination of the retina documented ischemia and the visual field defects were permanent. In one patient, the internal carotid artery was patent and thought to be the conduit for embolization to the eye. Two patients had chronic occlusion of the internal carotid artery, and blindness resulted from atheromatous emboli to the eye through the external carotid artery in one and from postoperative thrombosis of the external cartoid artery in the other. Our experience calls attention to…

Official statistics and blindness in Hong Kong.

WHO designated 1976 as the year for the prevention of blindness and attention is drawn to the prevalence rate and causes of blindness in Hong Kong. The former as released by WHO is as high as 1392 per 100,000 and the latter tends to suggest Vitamin A deficiency is still an important cause here. This article reviews all the official statistics on blindness published in Hong Kong over the past twenty years and seeks to suggest an appropriate prevalence rate for Hong Kong and demonstrate the changing pattern of causes of blindness in Hong Kong. It concludes that Hong Kong should adopt a statistic…

Blindness in the Midwestern State of Nigeria.

The major blinding conditions in the Midwestern State of Nigeria are cataract (33.2%), uveitis (20.4%), chronic simple glaucoma (17.1%), trauma(7.9%). The primary causes of uniocular blindness are uveitis (28.3%), cataract (23.9%), chronic simple glaucoma (13.2%), trauma (9.9%). Comparisons of the main causes of blindness in Midwestern, Northern, Western and Eastern Nigeria and Great Britain are made.

Rhodopsin bleaching signals in essential night blindness.

1. The dark-adaptation curves of two subjects with essential night blindness revealed no evidence for functioning rod vision. Cone vision was normal.2. The photopupillomotor dark adaptation, and flash intensity response amplitude curves on one of these subjects confirmed the absence of rod function.3. However, there is the normal amount of rhodopsin in their rods with normal kinetics.4. Cone pigment kinetics are also nearly normal. After a full bleach, log threshold elevation of the foveal cones is linearly related to pigment regeneration. The constant of proportionality is about 3.0 as it is …

Childhood blindness prevention in Aotearoa New Zealand.

AIM: While less common than adult blindness, childhood blindness has a significant burden in terms of the total number of "blind years". We aim to determine if there is scope for improved strategies in the prevention of childhood blindness in Aotearoa New Zealand. METHOD: We conducted a review of New Zealand childhood blindness data. RESULTS: In New Zealand, there is a paucity of data on childhood blindness. However, significant scope remains for prevention through optimising maternal health, neonatal care, increasing uptake of immunisations and attendance at vision screening programmes, as …

Blindness After Facial Filler: An Alternative Theory.

Facial fillers are widely regarded as a safe and effective method for cosmetic enhancement, with common adverse effects including bruising, swelling, and tenderness. Rarely, however, vascular complications can occur, resulting in severe outcomes such as sudden blindness. The classic theory posits that a retrograde column of filler is injected into a vessel and reaches the take-off of the central retinal artery, yet several biomechanical and clinical inconsistencies challenge this mechanism. We propose an alternative theory in which filler emboli enter a vessel and follow anterograde flow to re…

Visual impairment and blindness in diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) and a leading cause of preventable visual impairment (VI) and blindness worldwide. The rising global prevalence of DM, particularly in low- and middle-income regions such as the Middle East, necessitates the collection of localized data on DR-related VI. Despite growing public health concerns, limited research has been conducted in the Gulf region, including Oman. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and severity of VI associated with DR and identify its key risk factors among patients wi…

Reversal of ischemic cortical blindness with tenecteplase.

PURPOSE: Tenecteplase (TNK) is a bioengineered variant of alteplase that has a longer half-life, a higher fibrin binding specificity, and a lower effect on systemic fibrinolytic activity. We reported a case of reversible bilateral vision loss to homonymous hemianopsia after TNK administration. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old African American male presented with acute onset of visual loss to no light perception (NLP) in both eyes (OU), left hemiparesis, decreased sensation, and dysarthria. Brain MRI revealed acute infarct involving the right posterior cerebral artery distribution without evide
