The authors analyzed 2 plasmosubstituting solutions of entirely different quantitative composition used during intensive plasmapheresis (47 procedures in 24 patients). Indices of central hemodynamics and blood oxygen-transport function served as criteria of the adequacy of plasmosubstitution. Plasmosubstitution in the volume of 110-130% to the volume of plasma exfusion was shown to preserve a stable volume of the circulating blood. Plasmosubstituting solutions should be composed of not less that 70% of protein and colloidal agents. Their lesser content (not more than 40%) revealed the developm

Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the most disabling diseases characterized by severe humor fluctuation. It is accompanied by cognitive and functional impairment in addiction to high suicide rates. BD is often underdiagnosed and treated incorrectly because many of the reported symptoms are not exclusive to the disorder. Once the diagnosis is exclusively clinical, it is not possible to state precisely. From that, proteomic approaches were used to identify, in a large scale, all proteins involved in cellular or tissue processes. This review aggregate data from blood proteomes, by using protein ass

Cellular prion protein (PrP(c)) is a glycoprotein expressed at low to moderate levels within the nervous system. Recent studies suggest that PrP(c) may possess neuroprotective functions and that its expression is upregulated in certain neurodegenerative disorders. We investigated whether PrP(c) expression is altered in the frontal and occipital cortex in two well-characterized neurodegenerative disorders--Alzheimer's disease (AD) and diffuse Lewy body disease (DLBD)--compared with that in normal human brain using immunohistochemistry and computerized image analysis. The distribution of PrP(c)

We aimed to study the protein and gene expression of some hepatic enzymes of lipid metabolism along with plasma biomarkers in grazing dairy cattle during the transition period. Blood and liver biopsies from a group of eight multiparous cows were sampled at -28, -14, +4, +14, +28 and +56 days relative to parturition. Peak concentrations of NEFA and beta-hydroxybutyric acid with high triacylglycerol content in the liver were recorded on day 4 postpartum. Consistent with blood biomarkers, the gene expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) and acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) increased, wh

Increasing evidence shows that latent infections and inflammation is associated with cognitive and behavioral changes in humans. This case-control study investigates the association between Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) infection and C-reactive Protein (CRP) levels, and psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior. Public health register data from 81,912 participants in the Danish Blood Donor Study, were reviewed to identify individuals registered with an ICD-10 code of any psychiatric diagnosis, or who had attempted or committed suicide. We found 1,504 psychiatric cases and 353 suicidal

Inflammation is an important indicator of tissue injury. In the acute form, there is usually accumulation of fluids and plasma components in the affected tissues. Platelet activation and the appearance in blood of abnormally increased numbers of polymorphonucleocytes, lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages usually occur. Infectious disorders such as sepsis, meningitis, respiratory infection, urinary tract infection, viral infection, and bacterial infection usually induce an inflammatory response. Chronic inflammation is often associated with diabetes mellitus, acute myocardial infarction, c

Identifying peripheral proteins having therapeutic effects on cognitive impairment could provide beneficial insights into the prevention and treatment of cognition-related disorders, including postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) that is a common postoperative cognitive impairment mainly caused by anesthesia/surgery. Here, proteomic and transcriptomic analyses in multiple organs from humans and POCD mice are conducted to identify potential peripheral targets for anesthesia/surgery-induced cognitive impairment. The results show that anesthesia/surgery can disrupt the blood-brain barrier (

Patients with primary hypercoagulopathies often present with recurrent, spontaneous deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. An adolescent eventually diagnosed with protein S deficiency presented with unilateral deep venous thrombosis documented ultrasonographically. Scintigraphic studies showed no evidence of pulmonary embolism but revealed a complete absence of deep venous flow in both lower extremities, the pelvis, and the abdomen. Subsequent ultrasonography and CT scanning documented this marked thrombotic extension. Radionuclide scintigraphy may play an important role in the serial

Movement disorders have been carefully clinically defined, based on clinico-pathological series; however there is often diagnostic and prognostic uncertainty, especially in early stage disease. Blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD), particularly p-tau181 and p-tau217, may be useful in the movement disorder clinic, especially in identifying corticobasal syndrome due to AD pathology and in identifying Parkinson's disease (PD) patients at high risk for the future development of dementia. Serum or plasma neurofilament light (NfL) may be useful in separating Parkinson's plus syndromes

The regulatory proteins CD55 and CD59 are glycolsylphosphatidylinositol-anchored, type I cell surface proteins, which inhibit formation of the C3 convertases and prevent the terminal polymerization of the membrane attack complexes, respectively. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a genetic disorder due to the impaired conformation of the glycolsylphosphatidylinositol anchor, which results in the deficient expression of CD55 and CD59 leading to excessive destruction of red cells and leukocytes. We have studied the expression of these two molecules in red blood cells, granulocytes and

BACKGROUND: Rare coagulation factor deficiencies are uncommon inherited bleeding disorders that remain poorly understood in many parts of the world, including Morocco. They primarily involve factors I, II, V, VII, X, XI, and XIII, and are generally inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. This study aims to analyze the epidemiological and biological profiles of these deficiencies in a Moroccan population.
METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study conducted over a ten-year period (January 2015 - May 2025) in the Hematology Laboratory of the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablan

The existence of a general abnormality in haemostasis causes more copious and protracted haemorrhage but does not, in theory, cause epistaxis. Abnormalities in primary haemostasis are at the root of these serious haemorrhages (thrombocytopenia and Willebrand's disease). Haemophilia is more rarely the trigger for intractable epistaxis. Treatment consists of local measures and replacement therapy. In all cases local treatment should have as little traumatic effect as possible in order to avoid a recurrence of haemorrhage when compression is removed. In women with abnormal constitutional haemosta

Arginase is the final enzyme in the urea cycle. Its deficiency is the least frequently described disorder of this cycle. It results primarily in elevated blood arginine, and less frequently in either persistent or acute elevations in blood ammonia. This appears to be due to a second arginase locus, expressed primarily in the kidney, which can be recruited to compensate, in part, for the deficiency of liver arginase. The liver arginase gene structure permitted study of the molecular pathology of patients with the disorder and the results of these studies and the inferences about the protein str

Snake venom proteins that affect the haemostatic system can cause (a) lowering of blood coagulability, (b) damage to blood vessels, resulting in bleeding, (c) secondary effects of bleeding, e.g. hypovolaemic shock and organ damage, and (d) thrombosis. These proteins may, or may not, be enzymes. We review the data on the most relevant haemostatically active proteinases, phospholipases A₂, L-amino acid oxidases and 5'-nucleotidases from snake venoms. We also survey the non-enzymatic effectors of haemostasis from snake venoms--disintegrins, C-type lectins and three-finger toxins. Medical applicat

Cerebral vascular disorders often accompany hypoxia-induced brain injury. In this study, we develop a zebrafish model of hypoxia-induced cerebral vascular injury to replicate the associated phenotypic changes, including cerebrovascular damage, neuronal apoptosis, and neurological dysfunction. We then explored the therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles derived from Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) cultured on soy protein-coated surfaces. These vesicles demonstrated superior recovery efficacy, especially in restoring the blood-brain barrier integrity and improvin

OBJECTIVE: High concentrate diets are widely used to satisfy high-yielding dairy cows; however, long-term feeding of high concentrate diets can cause subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA). The endocrine disturbance is one of the important reasons for metabolic disorders caused by SARA. However, there is no current report about thyroid hormones involved in liver metabolic disorders induced by a high concentrate diet.
METHODS: In this study, 12 mid-lactating dairy cows were randomly assigned to HC (high concentrate) group (60% concentrate of dry matter, n = 6) and LC (low concentrate) group (40% con

Baseline eosinophils reside in the gastrointestinal tract; however, in several allergic disorders, excessive eosinophils accumulate in the blood as well in the tissues. Recently, we showed in vitro that interleukin (IL)-18 matures and transforms IL-5-generated eosinophils into the pathogenic eosinophils that are detected in human allergic diseases. To examine the role of local induction of IL-18 in promoting eosinophil-associated intestinal disorders, we generated enterocyte IL-18-overexpressing mice using the rat intestinal fatty acid-binding promoter (Fabpi) and analysed tissue IL-18 overexp

BACKGROUND: Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, accomplishing a broad range of vital functions. Synthesis of glutathione and cysteine is performed mainly in the liver, whereas most other tissues are supplied with these thiols via sinusoidal efflux into the blood. Since canalicular efflux also occurs, thiols may be present in human bile. However, thiol composition of human gallbladder bile is largely unknown, which makes it difficult to speculate on the exact function of thiols in bile. In this study we report on the levels of non-protein bound thiols in gal

Selenium concentrations in children and teenagers without a metabolic disorder eating normal diets (group 1), and young patients with classical phenylketonuria and milder forms of hyperphenylalaninaemia being treated with a diet low in natural protein (group 2) were investigated. There was a strong correlation between blood selenium concentration and age in children in group 1 up to 10 years of age. Blood selenium concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activities were significantly lower in the patients who were receiving diets containing reduced amounts of natural protein, and the differen
