Ouabain- and bumetanide-resistant K+ influx, and haemoglobin (Hb) O2 saturation, were measured in HbA red cells over a range of oxygen tensions (PO2 values) in the presence and absence of 12C79 (5 mM), a substituted benzaldehyde which increases the O2 affinity of Hb. PO2 values for half-maximal O2 saturation declined from 29+/-2 mmHg (mean +/-SEM, n=3) in control cells to 7+/-1 mmHg with 12C79. BACKGROUND: Reports published in 1976 and 1980 described the low-incidence red cell antigen Wu. Distinction of Wu from all other known low-incidence antigens and from the ABO, Rh, Lutheran, Duffy, Kidd, P, and X-linked blood group systems allowed Wu to be placed in the International Society of Blood Transfusion's 700 series, designated as 700013. Recently, a blood donor apparently homozygous for Wu has been identified. This report documents the serologic and molecular findings of samples from this individual and the members of his family.

The effect of exchange transfusion with the perfluorated blood substitute (Fluosol-43) on endotoxin-induced synthesis of immunoreactive (i) thromboxane (Tx)B2, the stable metabolite of TxA2, was investigated in rats. This study investigated the effect of 5 day infusions of two structurally novel synthetic steroids, nivazol and cortivazol on blood pressure and in vivo indices of "glucocorticoid" and "mineralocorticoid" activity.
