Cross-Sectional Investigation of Acute Changes in Ultrasonographic Markers for Biceps and Supraspinatus Tendon Degeneration After Repeated Wheelchair Transfers in People With Spinal Cord Injury.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this work were to investigate how wheelchair transfers influence acute changes in ultrasound markers for biceps and supraspinatus tendon degeneration and to determine how such changes correlate with transfer technique and demographic characteristics. DESIGN: Participants underwent quantitative ultrasound examinations for markers of biceps and supraspinatus tendon degeneration (tendon width, echogenicity, variance, and contrast) before and after a stressful repeated-transfers protocol. The Transfer Assessment Instrument was completed for each participant to identif

Olympic Combat Sports as Weight-Management Interventions in Non-Athlete Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The official combat sports in the Olympic Games include fencing, taekwondo, wrestling, judo, boxing, and karate. Most current research indicates that participation in Olympic combat sports significantly improves the physical fitness of children and adolescents, but specific studies on its weight loss effects in this population remain relatively limited. This systematic review evaluated controlled Olympic combat-sport interventions for weight management and body composition in non-athlete children and adolescents. METHODS: We searched five databases and platforms: PubMed, ProQuest,

Body Composition after Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction with Endobronchial Valves: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema experience malnutrition and pulmonary cachexia. Endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) with endobronchial valves has not only improved lung function, exercise capacity, and quality of life but also influenced body weight. Only a few data are available on body composition changes after ELVR. METHODS: This single-center prospective study of patients with advanced COPD investigates body composition before and after endoscopic valve treatment using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The fol

Cachexia criteria in chronic illness associated with acute weight loss in patients with stroke.

OBJECTIVES: Weight loss after a stroke is associated with poor outcomes. However, the causes of weight loss in the acute phase of a stroke are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between acute weight changes and cachexia criteria in patients with an acute stroke. METHODS: In this prospective-cohort study, we assessed patients' body weight change during hospitalization, and investigated the five cachexia criteria (muscle strength, fatigue, anorexia, skeletal muscle mass, and abnormal biochemistry) at time of discharge in patients with an acute st

Sex differences in estimated brain metabolism in relation to body growth through adolescence.

The human brain consumes a disproportionate amount of the body's overall metabolic resources, and evidence suggests that brain and body may compete for substrate during development. Using perfusion MRI from a large cross-sectional cohort, we examined developmental changes of MRI-derived estimates of brain metabolism, in relation to weight change. Nonlinear models demonstrated that, in childhood, changes in body weight were inversely related to developmental age-related changes in brain metabolism. This inverse relationship persisted through early adolescence, after which body and brain metabol

Magnetic resonance imaging of the weight-bearing spine.

Weight-bearing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the spine can either be simulated by imaging the patient in the supine position in combination with a special axial loading device or be achieved by using vertically open-configuration MR systems, which allow for in vivo MR images of the spine under upright weight-bearing conditions in either seated or standing body positions. Weight-bearing MRI of the spine permits the study of physiological as well as pathological changes in the relationships of the intervertebral disk, the spinal canal, and the neural foramina as well as the assessment of se

Investigation into the long-term metabolic effects of aripiprazole adjunctive to lithium, valproate, or lamotrigine.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar I disorder (BPD) patients are often overweight or obese, and likely to have metabolic syndrome. Several medications used to treat BPD are associated with increased body weight and/or worsening metabolic parameters. METHODS: Metabolic data were analyzed from two efficacy studies of aripiprazole plus the mood stabilizers, lithium/valproate (Study CN138-189), or lamotrigine (Study CN138-392), in the long-term treatment (52 weeks) of BPD. Changes in body weight, individual metabolic parameters, and incidence of metabolic syndrome were assessed. RESULTS: In the lithium/valproa

[Relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition].

To study the relationship between diaphragm weight and body composition, we measured fat body mass and lean body mass by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (XR-26, Norland), and weighed the diaphragms of patients at autopsy. The subjects were 22 patients with various diseases (13 men and 9 women, aged 72.6 +/- 9.5 years). In 8 of the patients, respiratory muscle strength was assessed with maximal pressure at the mouth. The diaphragm weight was 185.2 +/- 58.2 g and it correlated significantly with lean body mass (r = 0.77, r = 0.73, p < 0.01). Maximal inspiratory pressure at TLC correlated signif

The impact of short-term intensive fasting on physical health and gut microbiota in obese individuals.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterize how a 7-day complete water-only fast followed by structured refeeding was associated with changes in body weight, hydration-dependent bioelectrical-impedance estimates, physical test performance, cardiovascular indicators, and gut microbial ecology in adults with obesity and normal-weight controls. METHODS: Seventy-two eligible volunteers formed prespecified BMI sampling strata (normal weight, n = 36; obesity, n = 36), from which 14 participants were randomly selected within each stratum before the intervention and before outcome collection (N = 28

Temporal changes in obstructive sleep apnea severity and body composition parameters during 6-month tofogliflozin administration in patients with heart failure and type 2 diabetes mellitus: a TOPARDS-HF substudy.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is closely associated with obesity and fluid retention. Our previous study suggested that, in patients with heart failure, the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, tofogliflozin, promotes diuresis and weight loss and improves OSA severity. However, whether changes in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) are chronologically associated with body composition parameters remains unclear. METHODS: We enrolled 10 patients (six men) with OSA. They received tofogliflozin (20 mg) daily for 6 months. The AHI was assessed using WatchPAT® at baseline, 3, and 6 months.

Impact of Diet Interventions for Weight Loss on Lean Body Mass and Resting Metabolic Rate: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: Individuals with excess weight are at a higher risk of overall health issues and often seek to modify their diets to lose weight. Weight loss can alter body composition, leading to a decrease in lean body mass (LBM) and resting metabolic rate (RMR). Limited research has examined the relationship between different dietary modifications and body weight, LBM, and RMR. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to research the impact of weight-loss dietary interventions on body weight, LBM, and RMR in adults with overweight or obesity. DATA SOURCES: The search was conducted using the following databa

A Plant-Based High-Carbohydrate, Low-Fat Diet in Overweight Individuals in a 16-Week Randomized Clinical Trial: The Role of Carbohydrates.

The effects of carbohydrates on body weight and insulin sensitivity are controversial. In this 16-week randomized clinical trial, we tested the role of a low-fat, plant-based diet on body weight, body composition and insulin resistance. As a part of this trial, we investigated the role of changes in carbohydrate intake on body composition and insulin resistance. Participants (n = 75) were randomized to follow a plant-based high-carbohydrate, low-fat (vegan) diet (n = 38) or to maintain their current diet (n = 37). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure body composition. Insulin r

Reduced left ventricular mass after treatment of obese patients with sibutramine: An echocardiographic multicentre study.

AIM: In obesity, left ventricular hypertrophy is frequently observed, especially in the presence of hypertension. Following body weight reduction, the left ventricular mass (LVM) is reduced. It is not known to which extent this occurs after treatment with sibutramine. METHODS: In this multicentre trial, 195 male and female patients (18-65 years of age, body mass index 30-40 kg/m2) were treated for 12 weeks with either 15 mg/day sibutramine or placebo. They were advised to follow mildly hypocaloric reducing diets. Exclusion criteria were blood pressure values >180/110 mmHg and tachycardia (hea

Skeletal Phenotyping of Period-1-Deficient Melatonin-Proficient Mice.

In mice, variability in adult bone size and density has been observed among common inbred strains. Also, in the group of genes regulating circadian rhythmicity in mice, so called clock genes, changes in body size and skeletal parameters have been noted in knockout mice. Here, we studied the size and density of prominent bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton of clock gene Period-1-deficient (Per1-/-) mice by means of microcomputed tomography. Our data show shorter spinal length, smaller and less dense femora and tibiae, but no significant changes in the shape of the skull and the length

Renal excretion of water in infants with acute gastroenteritis.

Infants with severe gastroenteritis were given water loads of 20 ml/kg body weight during their recovery. The renal responses were correlated with changes in body weight and osmolality. A water load was not excreted until the body weight had reached a peak. It is concluded that while volume depletion persists administration of hypotonic fluids leads to a fall in osmolality which will not be corrected by renal excretion of water. The relevance of this observation to the high incidence of neurological disturbances during the treatment of hyperosmolar states is discussed.

The validity and reliability of a biometrically accurate, photorealistic set of young adult body size scales based on 3D scans of White Europeans.

Young adults are a high-risk group for weight-related health problems but are often overlooked in weight management intervention design. Validated visual tools that accurately depict body size are needed to improve communication and intervention strategies. This study validated innovative, photo-realistic, gender-specific body size scales of young adults (aged 18), created from 3D scans to depict systematic changes in adiposity. A total of 110 young adults (aged 18-25) completed two behavioural tasks: (1) estimating the relative size of the bodies and (2) ranking them in ascending order of wei

Weight-loss and body-composition trajectories after bariatric surgery may follow different timelines.

Weight stability is commonly used as a practical marker after bariatric surgery and may influence the timing of subsequent elective procedures. Recent longitudinal body-composition data show that changes in body weight, fat mass, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle mass, and phase angle may follow non-parallel temporal trajectories. These observations describe body-composition remodeling but do not establish that physiological recovery follows the same pattern or that body-composition measures can define readiness for further surgery. Whether persistent changes in these parameters correspond to cli
