BACKGROUND: Multiple approaches for fixation of distal radius fractures exist; nonetheless, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment for these injuries. Although using volar locking plates has become increasingly common as a surgical intervention, the usefulness of bone augmentation remains debatable. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the necessity of bone augmentation for distal radius fractures fixed with a volar locking plate.
METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled patients with a single distal radius fracture treated with a volar locking plate between January 2014 and Dece

Distal radius fractures are one of the most common injuries seen by orthopedists at the emergency room and clinics. Severity and configuration may vary, and therapeutic options are broad, but regardless of the course of treatment, all cases can potentially lead to malunion. When malunion requires surgical correction, the surgery can be technically demanding. Here, we demonstrate an alternative technique to perform corrective osteotomies for extra-articular or minimally displaced articular distal radius malunion. We provide simplification of the procedure by eliminating one of the planes taken

PURPOSE: In this research, low modulus carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polyetheretherketone composite plates (CF-PEEK plates) were compared with traditional metal plates using finite element analysis to establish a reference for clinical application.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Plates of stainless steel, titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V), or CF-PEEK with different carbon fiber reinforcement ratios (CF30, CF50, and CF60) were used to fix the tibial shaft comminuted fracture. The maximum stress, the maximum displacement of fracture and the stress shielding of cortex bone were analyzed.
RESULTS: Under 200 N axia

Beyond the traditional monotherapy of connective tissue grafting, the combination of orthodontic therapy, soft-tissue grafting, and bone grafting with biologics may provide ideal treatment for complex recession defects with root prominence, thin tissues, and buccal plate dehiscences. The authors propose the benefits of performing a preoperative evaluation of complex mucogingival defects with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology and then considering surgical management with modalities like bone grafting and orthodontics in addition to the classic soft-tissue grafting approach. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to test whether local filling of a novel strontium-containing hydroxyapatite (Sr-HA) bone cement can augment the fixation of a locking plate system in a cadaveric proximal humeral facture model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve pairs of formalin-treated cadaveric humeri were used. One side in each pair was for cemented group, while the other side was for the control group. The bone mineral density (BMD) of the samples was tested. A 3-part facture model was created and then reduced and fixed by a locking plate system. In the cemented group, the most pro

Alendronate, a bisphosphonate drug, has shown promise in reducing remodeling and bone loss in postmenopausal osteoporosis. Alendronate acts directly on the osteoclast, inhibiting its resorption capability. This inhibition of osteoclast activity has led to the use of bisphosphonates in the treatment of the osteogenesis imperfecta condition. Treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta with bisphosphonates enhances bone strength, but the consequences on linear bone growth are not well defined. Using the oim mouse model for type III osteogenesis imperfecta, two doses of alendronate, low (0.125 mg/kg/wk)

This paper describes the design and construction of a biomechanical model that will determine the pull-out strengths and fatigue failure of internal fixation devices used at the lumbosacral junction. Fusions at this junction have the highest failure rate. It is suggested that devices that successfully fix this vertebral unit will be effective at other levels of the spine. A model that tests any device designed for use at the lumbosacral junction will therefore provide a uniform measure of the effectiveness of different kinds of instrumentation at the L5-S1 vertebral unit. It will also provide

Posttraumatic tibia valga is a well-recognized complication following fracture of the upper tibial metaphysis in young children. We present a case of a child who developed a valgus deformity following fracture of the proximal tibia and fibula in which quantitative bone scintigraphy at 5 months after injury demonstrated increased uptake at the proximal tibial growth plate with proportionally greater uptake on the medial side. This finding suggests that the valgus deformity in this patient was due to a relative increase in vascularity and consequent overgrowth of the medial portion of the proxim

Fractures of the lower limbs represent a common cause of hospital admission. Surgical intervention is increasingly indicated in paediatric patients. The gold standard for treating long bone fractures in the immature skeleton is intramedullary fixation with titanium elastic nails. Minimally invasive plating is considered a suitable option when elastic nailing is not feasible. The use of a plate provides adequate mechanical stability for weight-bearing and limb mobility while preserving biological bone integrity and resulting in limited scarring, generally well accepted by patients and families,

Metacarpal and phalangeal nonunion is rare; however, surgery is required if these fractures result in instability or persistent pain. Revision of nonunion following plate fixation is challenging, as it demands bone grafting at the nonunion site and stable fixation. Here, we present a surgical technique for managing metacarpal and phalangeal nonunion after failed plate fixation using an intramedullary strut bone peg reinforced with intramedullary K-wires. This technique achieves a high union rate by increasing the intramedullary contact surface, promoting bone healing. Moreover, intramedullary
