Effects of Stellate Ganglion Block on Healing of Fractures Induced in Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Sympathetic blocks are used as an adjunct for pain management in the treatment of orthopedic and traumatic conditions. Stellate ganglion (ganglion stellatum) provides sympathetic innervation of the head, neck and cervicothoracic regions, and upper extremities. No study was found in the literature investigating the effects of stellate ganglion block performed in the upper extremity, on blood supply to bone, density, vascularization, and bone metabolism. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of stellate ganglion block on healing of closed forearm fractu

Grebe dysplasia - prenatal diagnosis based on rendered 3-D ultrasound images of fetal limbs.

Grebe dysplasia is a rare skeletal dysplasia characterized by severe acromesomelic shortening of the long bones in a proximal to distal gradient of severity, with bones of the hands and feet more severely affected than those of the forearms and legs, which in turn are more severely affected than the humeri and femora. In addition, the bones of the lower extremities tend to be more severely affected than the bones of the upper extremities. Despite the severe skeletal deformities, the condition is not lethal and surviving individuals can have normal intelligence. Herein we report a case of Grebe

[Congenital hemihypertrophy associated with cutaneous pigmento-vascular, cerebral, visceral and bone abnormalities].

A case of hemihypertrophy associated with multiple anomalies of the skin, bone and visceral organs is presented. A 31-year-old female was admitted for evaluation of her skin conditions. Her family history is noncontributory, while her past history discloses operations for syndactyly of the right foot, tonsillar hypertrophy, anal prolapse and ovarial cyst. Erythemas of the face and the left upper extremity were noticed during the neonatal period and hypertrophy of the right side of the body started at age 2 months. On admission, hemihypertrophy was observed in the face, trunk and extremities. M

Upper extremity stress fractures.

Although less common than lower-extremity stress fractures, upper-extremity stress fractures are becoming recognized much more frequently. A majority of these fractures are caused by overuse and fatigue of the surrounding musculature and, as a result, may be prevented by appropriate training and conditioning. Diagnosis is made by history and physical examination with the aid of plain radiographs, bone scans, and MRI. Most of these fractures heal with a period of relative rest followed by a structured rehabilitation program. A small percentage of these fractures, however, may require surgical f

Heterotopic bone formation in burned patients.

Heterotopic bone formation about joints and in soft tissues is known to cause joint immobilization and permanent physical impairment in burned patients. Despite aggressive physical therapy aimed at prevention, heterotopic bone formation still occurs in a small percentage of patients. Prolonged immobilization in concert with trauma or burn about the involved joint is recognized as being responsible for this heterotopic bone formation. Specifically, immobilization of extremities, particularly the elbow and upper extremity, should be minimized by early grafting for preservation of function. As bu

[Repair and functional reconstruction of war wounds of limbs].

From 1979 to 1994, reparative and reconstructive surgery were used to repair the war injuries of skins, bones, blood vessels and nerves of the limbs in 800 cases. A systematic clinical study was carried out. Many new operative methods were used and the results of treatment were good. Innovations and modifications were made in technique. In 120 cases of war injuries having soft tissues defects including skin and muscles, various tissue transplantations were used with the hope to accomplish one-staged repair of the defect and reconstruction of motor function of muscle. To those infections of bon

Florid reactive periostitis of the long bone: A case series of seven patients.

BACKGROUND: Florid reactive periostitis (FRP) is a rare benign periosteal lesion, which mostly involves the tubular bones of the extremities. FRP of the long bone is especially rare. We here report a case series of long bone FRP and also discuss the differential diagnosis and clinical outcome of our series. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In total, four female and three male patients with long bone FRP and a mean age of 25.1 years were evaluated for this study, from which four upper extremity and three lower extremity FRP lesions were identified. Patients were classified according to the clinical, radi

A case of severe dysmelia of all extremities.

A group of limb reduction defects is defined by congenital absence of either part of limbs. We report an extremely rare case of symmetrical upper limb peromelia (absence of distal bones) and asymmetrical lower limb phocomelia (absence of long bones and a flipper-like appearance of feet) in a female fetus at the 20th week of pregnancy. No other malformations were identified. The prevalence of peromelia and phocomelia is extremely rare, and these malformations can be associated with some candidate genes (e.g. de novo apparently balanced reciprocal translocation 46,XX,t(2;12)(p25.1;q24.1)).

A technique for using strain gauges to evaluate airbag interaction with cadaveric upper extremities.

Radius and ulna fractures from airbag deployment onto the forearm have been reported in the literature. Based on laboratory experiments with eight cadaveric upper extremities, this paper presents a method for using strain gages to evaluate upper extremity loading during airbag deployment. The technique provides strain rates, bending moments, and time of fracture for the radius and ulna. Planar rosettes (350 omega, 5% strain) were selected as the best choice given the application to bone with a rosette being placed mid-shaft on both the anterior and posterior surfaces of the radius and ulna. A genome-wide association study of limb bone length using a Large White × Minzhu intercross population.

BACKGROUND: In pig, limb bone length influences ham yield and body height to a great extent and has important economic implications for pig industry. In this study, an intercross population was constructed between the indigenous Chinese Minzhu pig breed and the western commercial Large White pig breed to examine the genetic basis for variation in limb bone length. The aim of this study was to detect potential genetic variants associated with porcine limb bone length. METHODS: A total of 571 F2 individuals from a Large White and Minzhu intercross population were genotyped using the Illumina Po

The predictive value of additional late blood pool imaging to the three-phase bone scan in the diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy in hemiplegic patients.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is a relative common sequel after hemiplegia. The diagnosis of RSD in hemiplegic patients presents difficult clinical problems, as the symptoms and signs of RSD are not specific and RSD may be due to reasons other than hemiplegia. Bone scintigraphy has been routinely used for the diagnosis of RSD; however, the optimal acquisition protocols, diagnostic patterns and the utility of quantitation are controversial. This prospective study was conducted to demonstrate the higher predictive value of an additional late blood pool image to the three-phase bone scan com

Evaluation of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors of the Shoulder Girdle.

INTRODUCTION: The shoulder girdle comprises the scapula, clavicle, proximal humerus, and the soft tissues surrounding these structures. Bone and soft tissue tumors are notably more prevalent in the lower extremity than in the upper extremity. However, the shoulder ranks as the third most common site for primary tumors, following the hip-pelvis and knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study conducted a retrospective examination of patients who presented with pain and swelling in the shoulder and its vicinity. The evaluation was carried out using a multidisciplinary approach by the Bone and Soft T

Vascular Health and Cutaneous Sensation are Predictive of Upper Limb Bone Loss in People with Stroke: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVES: Secondary osteoporosis is common post-stroke. Despite the importance of fracture prevention in this population, stroke-related factors which lead to bone loss over time remain relatively understudied. This study aimed to assess changes in distal radius bone properties after stroke and examine their association with clinical assessments of stroke-related impairment. DESIGN: Forty-five people with chronic stroke (age = 60.7 ± 7.2 years; post-stroke onset = 6.4 ± 4.2 years, 20 = women) and 45 healthy controls (age = 57.7 ± 6.3 years; 17 = women) completed this longitudinal study. Analysis of the nursing effects of traditional Chinese medicine featured care combined with individualized care on patients with upper limb fractures.

This study investigates the nursing effects of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-based care combined with individualized care for patients with upper limb fractures. A total of 180 patients with upper limb fractures who received treatment at the hospital's outpatient department from September 2020 to September 2023 were selected for this study. Through a retrospective analysis of their clinical data, the patients were divided into 2 groups: a control group and an observation group, with 90 cases in each group. The control group received routine care, while the observation group received a com

Waterproof casts for the management of upper limb fractures in children : a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIMS: Upper limb fractures in children are often managed in casts. Waterproof casts which allow safe immersion in water may be used. These may improve comfort, convenience, and satisfaction when compared with standard casts. The aim of this review was to compare the efficacy, safety, and satisfaction of waterproof casts with standard casts in the management of upper limb fractures in children. METHODS: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted in September 2024. Comprehensive searches of Medline, PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, and EMBASE databases were performed. The effectiveness of therapeutic craft-making activities in treating lower-third forearm fracture: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Occupational Therapists use craft-making activities as therapeutic interventions to improve physical and psychological functioning of injured people. Despite the therapeutic effects, craft-making is not routinely used in hand rehabilitation as an intervention for patients with upper limb fractures. These patients often experience physical and psychosocial issues; however, without supportive evidence, therapists hesitate to integrate craft-making into upper limb rehabilitation. PURPOSE: This study aims to determine the effect of a conventional therapy combined with therapeutic craf

Using PROM(I)S to measure health-related quality of life in patients with a bone fracture: An observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of patients with fractures is increasing and so is the impact on health care systems and society. To improve patient care, measurement of disabilities and impaired health experiences after traumatic musculoskeletal injuries are important. Next to objective clinical parameters, PROM(I)S can be used to map health domains important to patients. We aimed to objectify different aspects of (health-related) quality of life in fracture patients, including the ability to participate in social roles and activities using PROMIS among other PROMs. METHODS: An observational coh

The Role of External Fixation in the Management of Upper Extremity Fractures.

External fixation is a powerful tool in the armamentarium of the active orthopaedic surgeon. The upper extremity, however, poses unique challenges in the techniques of external fixation because of the smaller soft-tissue envelope and the proximity of neurovascular structures, which may be entrapped in fracture fragments or traversing in line with pin trajectories. This review article summarizes the indications, techniques, clinical outcomes, and complications of external fixation of the upper extremity in the setting of proximal humerus, humeral shaft, distal humerus, elbow, forearm, and dista

Elective implant removal in the upper extremity: only symptomatic patients benefit.

PURPOSE: Elective implant removal (IR) in the upper extremity remains controversial. Implants in the olecranon and clavicle are commonly removed for prominence, unlike in the distal radius. Patient-reported symptomatic cannot be verified, and nonspecific discomfort remains unquantified. In this study, indications and outcomes of IR at the clavicle, olecranon and distal radius were evaluated, with a focus on postoperative patient satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective, single-center cohort study, patients, who received elective IR of the clavicle, olecranon and distal radiu
