N-Acetyl Serotonin Provides Neuroprotective Effects by Inhibiting Ferroptosis in the Neonatal Rat Hippocampus Following Hypoxic Brain Injury.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is the main cause of infant brain damage, perinatal death, and chronic neonatal disability worldwide. Ferroptosis is a new form of cell death that is closely related to hypoxia-induced brain damage. N-Acetyl serotonin (NAS) exerts neuroprotective effects, but its effects and underlying mechanisms in hypoxia-induced brain damage remain unclear. In the present study, 5-day-old neonatal Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to hypoxia for 7 days to establish a hypoxia model. Histochemical staining was used to measure the effects of hypoxia on the rat hippocampus. The hi

Evidence of brain damage after high-altitude climbing by means of magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: There are only anecdotal and small reports on brain systematic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies in mountain climbers. The purpose of our work is to study the risk of brain lesions in mountain climbers by means of conventional MRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). METHODS: We recruited 35 climbers consecutively (12 were professional and 23 were amateur) in 4 expeditions without supplementary oxygen: 12 professionals and one amateur went up to Mt. Everest (8848 m), 8 amateurs to Mt. Aconcagua (6959 m), 7 amateurs to Mont Blanc (4810 m), and 7 amateurs to Mt. Kilimanjar

The management of mild and moderate head injuries.

The majority of patients seeking medical care after head trauma have sustained injuries of mild or moderate severity, i.e., GCS scores of 13 to 15 or 9 to 12, respectively. Mortality rates under these circumstances are generally low; however, serious complications must be detected and treated early. The initial evaluation involves determination of level of consciousness and examination for the presence of focal neurologic deficits. Skull radiography has a limited role in the management of mild and moderate head injuries, but consideration must be given to local factors such as the availability

[Prognosis and therapy of sporadic seizures (author's transl)].

Eighty-five patients were admitted to the hospital under the preliminary diagnosis of epileptic seizures. None of them had more than five seizures before admission. Sixty-five of these 85 patients had a neurological and electroencephalographic follow-up examination 5 to 7 years later. Another 8 had been readmitted before. From these 8 the diagnosis of cerebral tumor was made in 3 patients. In almost half of the remaining 70 cases the etiology of seizures remained uncertain. The leading known etiologic factors were chronic alcoholism, head injury and perinatal brain damage. Before admission sei

Central cortico-subcortical involvement: a distinct pattern of brain damage caused by perinatal and postnatal asphyxia in term infants.

OBJECTIVE: The MR findings in a characteristic pattern of hypoxic-ischemic brain damage in term infants are described. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MR images of seven patients with cerebral palsy and a specific pattern of central cortico-subcortical cerebral damage were studied retrospectively and correlated with clinical findings. RESULTS: All seven patients were born at term. Five of the seven patients had a clear history of severe perinatal asphyxia. All children had severe encephalopathic symptomatology, including spastic tetraplegia, extrapyramidal symptoms, and a mental deficit. The MR s

Precocious puberty in children after traumatic brain injury.

True precocious puberty frequently occurs secondary to central nervous system pathology and is a rare sequelae of severe head injury in early childhood. It is a clinical entity consisting of accelerated somatic development, thelarche and pubarche. We describe two female children, 3 and 5 years of age, who, following head trauma, displayed early pubertal changes including breast enlargement, pubic hair and vaginal secretions. Subsequent laboratory tests, which included hormone assays and luteinizing hormone response after injection of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone, established the diagn

Honored guest presentation: abulia minor vs. agitated behavior.

The neurological analysis of complex behavioral states associated with serious brain disease not infrequently is a difficult task. In many such cases, the signs of minor degrees of akinetic mutism were found when deliberately looked for. Recognition of this feature greatly facilitated interpretation. The ancient term abulia is suggested for the specific neurological syndrome comprising slowness, decreased responsiveness, apathy, etc. Akinetic mutism is its extreme form. A lesser degree of abulia is here termed abulia minor. The attributes of abulia minor are described, and the neurological con

[Prognosis of childhood brain injuries in relation to acute post-traumatic syndrome].

Long-time follow-up examinations of 196 children, who had been suffering from severe and moderately severe cerebral traumata, gave abundant proof of the view that neurological disorders occurring at the age of childhood are characterized by a positive development of the disease, a view that is held by all authors. Cerebral ailments characterized by attacks usually manifest themselves within one year after the accident. The younger the children at the time of accident, the higher the number of posttraumatic diseases characterized by attacks. Children with convulsive phenomena in the acute postt

Behavioral consequences of infections of the central nervous system: with emphasis on viral infections.

Infections of the central nervous system can damage the brain and cause abnormal behavior. In this article, the authors examine how behavior is affected by damage to different parts of the brain. They then focus on damage caused by specific infections of the brain and how these can result in abnormal behavior with legal consequences. Examples of such infections include neurosyphilis, encephalitis lethargica, herpes simplex encephalitis, and various other viral encephalitides, both acute and chronic. The AIDS dementia complex, which results from HIV infection of the brain, causes behavioral abn

Recovery of brain function following ischemia.

Experimental evidence conveys clear suggestions that early reperfusion following at least focal cerebral ischemia in the primate is accompanied by a return of function demonstrably suspended during the ischemic period. Complete and permanent arrest of the cerebral circulation has been known within seconds to lead to depression of brain electrical activity, and within minutes to gross disruption of the normal energy metabolism with failure of ionic homeostatic mechanisms. There is irreversible cell change and death within 5 to 10 minutes. Very much more protracted periods of ischemia have been

Clinicopathological study of neurological complications due to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Forty-three women with neurological complications secondary to eclampsia or severe pre-eclampsia were studied by CT scanning and in six intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring was carried out. In seven women who died, neuropathological findings were correlated with clinical features. Cerebral oedema was present in 27 of the patients studied and the severity of oedema correlated to the duration of intermittent seizures. In five of the six women who had ICP measured, this was found to be transiently high. Intracranial haemorrhage was demonstrated in four of the 43 women, all of whom died. Hypoxic

BDNF regains function in hippocampal long-term potentiation deficits caused by diencephalic damage.

Thiamine deficiency (TD), commonly associated with chronic alcoholism, leads to diencephalic damage, hippocampal dysfunction, and spatial learning and memory deficits. We show a decrease in the magnitude of long-term potentiation (LTP) and paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) at CA3-CA1 synapses, independent of sex, following diencephalic damage induced by TD in rats. Thus, despite a lack of extensive hippocampal cell loss, diencephalic brain damage down-regulates plastic processes within the hippocampus, likely contributing to impaired hippocampal-dependent behaviors. However, both measures of hip

Ethanol and oxidative mechanisms in the brain.

There is strong evidence showing that chronic and excessive ethanol consumption may enhance oxidative damage to neurons and result in cell death. Although not yet well understood, ethanol may enhance ROS production in brain through a number of pathways including increased generation of hydroxyethyl radicals, induction of CYP2E1, alteration of the cytokine signaling pathways for induction of iNOS and sPLA(2), and production of prostanoids through the PLA(2)/COX pathways. Since many neurodegenerative diseases are also associated with oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms in the brain, it would b
