Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) still causes major viral complications in the post-transplant period of both solid-organ (SO) and hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplant (T) recipients (R). PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this study is to review key recent findings related to the immunopathogenesis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, especially in regards to T lymphocytes. Decreased proportion of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes in peripheral blood likely contributed to susceptibility to Pneumocystis carinii in a foal. Cytological evaluation of bronchoalveolar lavage was required for identification of the pathogen and serial flow-cytometric analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes documented transient low expression of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes. Although immunodeficiency is uncommon, it must be included in the differential diagnosis for patients suffering from chronic or opportunistic infections and may provide an indication for immunostimulant therapy.

Today, T cells appear to be the main protagonists in the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris. This article summarizes how T cells might contribute to the generation of psoriatic skin lesions. It discusses the preferential T cell receptor usage and the putative mode of T cell activation in psoriatic skin lesions, and how streptococcal throat infections could be involved in disease manifestations. The results are integrated into a pathogenetic concept which considers psoriasis as a T-cell mediated autoimmune disorder.

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed on 70 RA patients, 28 without extra-articular manifestations, nine with pulmonary involvement, 13 with sicca-syndrome, 20 with other extra-articular manifestations such as renal involvement, cutaneous vasculitis and rheumatoid nodules. Asbestos exposure is known to cause malignant mesothelioma, which is associated with poor prognosis. We focused on and examined the effect of asbestos exposure on the differentiation and function of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs).
