Two cases of gigantic dystrophic calcinosis cutis caused by subcutaneous and/or intramuscular injections.

We describe two female patients with gigantic dystrophic calcinosis cutis caused by a large number of subcutaneous and/or intramuscular injections which they received when they were much younger. Laboratory data and physical examinations were generally within normal limits, and we detected no disease which might induce cutaneous calcification. There are many reports of dystrophic calcinosis cutis caused by injection of several kinds of drugs. However, we found no previous report describing a patient with calcinosis cutis induced by local tissue injury from a large number of injections and with…

Calcinosis cutis associated with syringomas: a transepidermal elimination disorder in a patient with Down syndrome.

Several cutaneous disorders have been associated with Down syndrome. An increased frequency of syringomas and of elastosis perforans serpinginosa, a transepidermal elimination disorder, have been described. We report the first case of the simultaneous occurrence of transepidermal elimination of calcium associated with syringomas in a patient with Down syndrome who had lesions clinically suggestive of milia.

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis causing cubital tunnel syndrome: A case report and review of literature.

Calcinosis cutis is a type of heterotopic calcification where abnormal calcium deposition occurs in skin or subcutaneous tissue. Among the subtypes of calcinosis cutis, the idiopathic variety occurs without underlying biochemical calcium abnormality. We report a rare case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis causing cubital tunnel syndrome. A 63-year-old female presented with pain and numbness in the ulnar aspect of her left hand. The X-ray of the left elbow showed deposition of radiopaque material on the posteromedial aspect. Her nerve conduction study showed evidence of ulnar nerve compression at …

Diffuse Idiopathic calcinosis cutis: a case report in a 13-year-old Syrian boy.

Calcinosis cutis is characterized by the deposition of calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. It is divided into the following subtypes: dystrophic, metastatic, iatrogenic, idiopathic and calciphylaxis. In this case, we report a 13-year-old Syrian boy with idiopathic calcinosis cutis, the lesions were unusually widespread, unlike the common condition which is usually localized to one area. The case was unrelated to any systemic or local disorders, and the patient had no complications, so no treatment was planned. As the best of our knowledge, there are very few cases of diffuse or …

A 52-Year-Old Female with Multiple Swellings in Both Hands: Idiopathic Calcinosis Cutis.

Calcinosis cutis is a rare disorder characterized by deposition of insoluble calcium salts in skin and subcutaneous tissue. Depending upon the aetiology, there are five subtypes of calcinosis cutis described in the literature; dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, iatrogenic, and calciphylaxis. Idiopathic calcinosis cutis is rarely described in the literature. We herein report a 52-year-old female presented with calcinosis cutis in both hands. After ruling out metabolic and systemic causes of abnormal calcium deposition, the patient was diagnosed with idiopathic calcinosis cutis. The patient was…

Calcinosis cutis in chronic renal failure diagnosed by fine needle aspiration. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Deposition of calcium salts in the skin and subcutis, referred to as calcinosis cutis, is a common complication in patients with end-stage renal disease. The lesion can present as a mass and is amenable to fine needle aspiration (FNA). CASE: A 48-year-old man undergoing hemodialysis following a failed renal transplant presented with a 1.5-cm neck nodule. A diagnosis of calcinosis cutis was made following FNA, which obtained semiliquid, chalky material. CONCLUSION: In cytologic preparations, deposits of calcium salts can be both amorphous and refractile on Diff-Quik and Papanicola…

Erdafitinib-Induced Flexural Calcinosis Cutis in a Pediatric Patient: A Drug-Specific Side-Effect?

Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) inhibitors are effective in malignancies with FGFR pathway alterations but may disrupt calcium-phosphate metabolism, leading to dermatologic side effects. We report a case of calcinosis cutis presenting as painful flexural plaques in a 16-year-old patient treated with erdafitinib for high-grade glioma. The patient's age, unusual lesion distribution, and spontaneous resolution after drug discontinuation highlight a previously unreported association in pediatrics. Recognizing this potential adverse effect may help avoid unnecessary diagnostic or therapeut…

Tofacitinib for Calcinosis Cutis Associated With Juvenile Dermatomyositis: An Open-Label Single-Arm Study.

OBJECTIVE: Calcinosis cutis (CC) is dystrophic calcification affecting 20% to 40% of patients with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Management of CC is often challenging owing to its being refractory to usual therapeutic options. Type I interferon (IFN)-mediated immune dysregulation may be involved in the pathogenic role in CC, suggesting that altering JAK/STAT signaling through JAK inhibitors might offer a therapeutic benefit. METHODS: In this open-label, single-arm study, the primary objective was to study the effect of tofacitinib (MSN Pharmaceuticals) on the burden of CC in children (2-18 …

Recalcitrant digital calcinosis cutis successfully treated with intralesional sodium thiosulfate under digital nerve blockade.

Dystrophic calcinosis cutis can be associated with severe pain, decreased mobility, increased risk of infection and significantly decreased quality of life. We report a case of recalcitrant calcinosis cutis on the background of eosinophilic fasciitis, which achieved rapid reduction in calcium deposits following a novel injecting protocol of intralesional sodium thiosulfate.

Multiple Scattered and Small Lesions of Lower Limbs: Idiopathic Calcinosis Cutis: A Case Report.

Calcinosis cutis is a rare presentation and not many cases have been reported especially of idiopathic type. We are reporting a case of idiopathic calcinosis cutis of lower limbs in a 33-year old female who presented to our clinic for multiple painless swellings over her lower limbs for the past six months, without any history of trauma or infection. We have decided to observe her condition on regular follow-up and conservative management.

Calcinosis cutis following calcium chloride electrode paste application for auditory-brainstem evoked potentials recording.

Circumscribed calcification in the dermis (calcinosis cutis) has been reported following electroencephalographic and electromyographic studies at sites of electrode placement following application of an electrode paste containing calcium chloride. Prolonged exposure and skin microabrasions seem to increase the risk of this rare complication of electrode placement, which has not been previously reported following auditory brainstem evoked potential recordings. We report the appearance of localized dermal calcifications at the sites of electrode placement (forehead and retroauricular areas) foll…

Neonatal Calcinosis Cutis After Treatment of Hypocalcemia with Calcium Gluconate: A Report of 2 Cases.

BACKGROUND Calcium gluconate is used to treat neonatal hypocalcemia, severe hyperkalemia, and neonatal convulsions. Calcium gluconate can extravasate into the skin's soft tissues, resulting in redness, skin nodules, and calcification of soft tissue, which can cause tissue necrosis. This report presents 2 cases of neonatal calcinosis cutis following the treatment of hypocalcemia with calcium gluconate. CASE REPORT Case 1. The patient was a 12-day-old male neonate who presented with a mass in the right foot. He was recently discharged from the hospital after evacuation of subdual hematoma trigge…

Surgical Debulking for Symptomatic Management of Calcinosis Cutis of the Hand and Upper Extremity in Systemic Sclerosis.

PURPOSE: To determine whether elective calcinosis debulking surgery of the hands and/or upper extremities is a safe and effective treatment for painful symptomatic scleroderma. Our hypothesis was that calcinosis debulking surgery would result in improvement in patient-reported pain and range of motion (ROM) with relatively little postoperative surgical pain for scleroderma patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of scleroderma patients who underwent elective calcinosis debulking surgery by a single surgeon between August 2014 and August 2019. Patients were included if they had

Metastatic calcinosis cutis due to refractory hypercalcaemia responsive to denosumab in a patient with multiple sclerosis.

Metastatic calcinosis cutis results from abnormal calcium levels leading to the precipitation of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Here, we present the case of a 67-year-old man with multiple sclerosis on chronic dexamethasone and concurrent supplementation of calcium and daily cholecalciferol presenting with painful calcified lesions. During initial presentation, corrected calcium was 13.8 mg/dL (reference range: 8.5-10.1 mg/dL), ionised calcium was 1.70 mg/dL (reference range: 1.13-1.32 mg/dL) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D was 41.6 ng/mL (reference range 30-100 ng/mL). N…
