Management of Capillary Hemangioma of the Sphenoid Sinus.

Background and objectives: Capillary hemangiomas are rare, benign vascular tumors that mainly affect the skin and soft tissue, with scarce appearance within the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. Materials and methods: We present a case report of capillary hemangioma of the sphenoid sinus and a review of the literature in the last ten years. Results: Clinical and endoscopic examination of the nose, radiologic assessment and particular histologic features contribute to the correct diagnosis of capillary hemangioma of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Conclusions: Transnasal endoscopic resectio

Capillary hemangioma in the external auditory canal.

Hemangioma is a benign vascular soft tissue tumor. It is the most common soft tissue tumor in children and >60% of hemangiomas occur in the head and neck region. However, these tumors are rare in the external auditory canal (EAC). This case report describes a case of capillary hemangioma in the EAC in a woman 54 years of age. With the patient under local anesthesia in microscopic surgery, the mass was excised completely via a transcanal approach. If there is a cystic and pinkish mass in the EAC with symptoms of bleeding or pulsatile tinnitus, hemangioma should be considered. For symptomatic he

Capillary cell-type specialization in the alveolus.

In the mammalian lung, an apparently homogenous mesh of capillary vessels surrounds each alveolus, forming the vast respiratory surface across which oxygen transfers to the blood1. Here we use single-cell analysis to elucidate the cell types, development, renewal and evolution of the alveolar capillary endothelium. We show that alveolar capillaries are mosaics; similar to the epithelium that lines the alveolus, the alveolar endothelium is made up of two intermingled cell types, with complex 'Swiss-cheese'-like morphologies and distinct functions. The first cell type, which we term the 'aerocyt…

Pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis: a distinct entity?

Pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis (PCH) is a rare and incompletely understood histopathological finding characterised by abnormal capillary proliferation within the alveolar interstitium, which has long been noted to share many overlapping features with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD). But are PCH and PVOD distinct entities that occur in isolation, or are they closely intertwined manifestations along a spectrum of the same disease? The classic clinical features of both PCH and PVOD include signs and symptoms related to pulmonary hypertension, hypoxaemia, markedly impaired diffusion

Unilateral pleural effusion with capillary haemangioma.

Here, we report a case of haemangioma on middle mediastinum accompanied by unilateral pleural effusion, which was initially suspected to be lung cancer and pleurisy. During annual check-up, chest radiography of a 30-year-old female showed homogeneous opacity in the left lower pulmonary field. Excision was performed, and the mass was pathologically diagnosed as benign mediastinal vascular tumour with exudative pleural effusion. To our knowledge, this presentation occurs in <0.5% of tumours of the mediastinum, and furthermore, the presence of pleural fluid is extremely rare, and the underlying m

[Congenital pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis in a newborn].

Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis is a rare entity characterized by the proliferation of capillaries into alveolar walls, interlobular septa, pleura and pulmonary interstitium, without malignant characteristics, with almost constant association with pulmonary hypertension. Until now two cases of congenital presentation have been reported in the literature. This is the third case in a newborn; he has not followed the usual pattern associated with pulmonary hypertension as occurs in most patients with this pathology; the highest incidence is among 20-40 years old. We report a preterm newborn p…

Nailfold capillary morphology in exfoliation syndrome.

PurposeThe purpose of the study was to investigate nailfold microvascular morphology in exfoliation syndrome with or without glaucoma (XFS/X … XFS/XFG vs controls (P-for trend ≤0.0001) and in POAG vs controls (P-for trend ≤0.01). For each 100 capillaries, the number of hemorrhages was similar (P-for trend=0.91) between XFS/XFG and POAG patients; however, there were more avascular zones per 100 capillaries with borderline significance (P-for trend=0.04) in the XFS/XFG group. XFS/XFG patients had more …

Capillary haemangioma on the palate: a diagnostic conundrum.

Haemangiomas are benign tumours of blood vessel origin and are classified as capillary, cavernous or central. They appear as flat or raised reddish-blue lesions and are generally solitary, affecting women in younger age groups. The tumour may be slowly progressive, involving extensive portions of the superficial and deep blood vessels, and affect function, depending on location. They are common in the head and neck region but rarely in the oral cavity. Oral lesions generally appear on the lips, buccal mucosa and tongue, but rarely on the palate. As the lesion can be confused with pyogenic gran

Capillary-venous malformation in the upper limb.

We present a group of patients with regional capillary malformations of the upper limbs and few additional findings other than prominent veins. We believe that this entity is the upper extremity equivalent of capillary-venous malformation of the lower limb and, likewise, belongs at the minor end of the spectrum of vascular disorders with overgrowth.

Mixed capillary venous retroperitoneal hemangioma.

We report a case of mixed capillary venous hemangioma of the retroperitoneum in a 61-year-old man. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a mass to be hypoechoic with increased flow in color Doppler imaging. Dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a centripetal filling-in of the mass, located anterior to the left psoas muscle at the level of sacroiliac joint. On the basis of imaging features, preoperative diagnosis of hemangioma was considered and the mass was excised by laparoscopic method. Immunohistochemical studies were strongly positive for CD31 and CD34, and negative for calreti

Imaging of the parafoveal capillary network in diabetes.

The retinal vasculature is an extremely complex system that is adapted to support the metabolic demands of the retinal structures, but on the other hand maintain the optimal optical qualities of this tissue. Through histological studies and clinical studies using fluorescein angiography we have learned a lot about the retinal vasculature in its physiological state and in different diseases, but both of these study methods have serious limitations that limit their extensive application in healthy subjects or in patients with early disease. In this current review we will present early observatio

Capillary-venous malformation in the lower limb.

Regional capillary malformation of a lower extremity is associated with the overgrowth of bone or soft tissue in several disorders, most commonly Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome and Parkes Weber syndrome. We have observed a subset of patients with a capillary malformation of the leg, minor growth disturbance, and prominent veins. The objective of the current study is to describe a series of patients with regional capillary malformation of the lower extremity in association with phlebectasia. This is a retrospective series of 17 patients diagnosed with capillary-venous malformation of the lower extr

Spinal cavernous and capillary hemangiomas in adults.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the neurological outcomes after resection of intramedullary, intradural extramedullary, and extradural hemangiomas. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal hemangiomas most commonly arise in the vertebral bodies and are typically asymptomatic. Uncommonly, hemangiomas may cause significant neurological deficits via extraosseous extension. Intramedullary hemangiomas may also occur and account for approximately 5% of all spinal cord lesions, with those located intradural extramedullary occurring rarely. Although retrospective studie

Blepharospasm in a patient with pontine capillary telangiectasia.

Blepharospasm is rarely due to an identifiable etiology. In the majority of cases, imaging fails to reveal any structural lesion. Here we describe an otherwise healthy patient with blepharospasm who was found to have pontine capillary telangiectasia. We propose a potential association between blepharospasm and pontine capillary telangiectasia.
