Association of Concomitant COVID-19 Infection With Outcomes in Patients With Acute Cardiovascular Diseases - Nationwide Study Using the JROAD Database in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Although the COVID-19 pandemic altered hospitalization trends for acute cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Japan, the effects of a concomitant COVID-19 diagnosis on mortality in this high-risk population remains unclear. We investigated the association between COVID-19 infection and 30-day mortality among patients hospitalized for acute CVD using a nationwide database. METHODS AND RESULTS: This retrospective cohort study used data from the Japanese Registry of All Cardiac and Vascular Diseases-Diagnosis Procedure Combination (JROAD-DPC) database from January 2020 to March 2022. Risk of cardiovascular events after influenza infection-related hospitalizations in adults with congenital heart disease: A nationwide population based study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular complications due to viral infection pose a significant risk in vulnerable patients such as those with congenital heart disease (CHD). Limited data exists regarding the incidence of influenza and its impact on cardiovascular outcomes among this specific patient population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was designed using the Canadian Congenital Heart Disease (CanCHD) database-a pan-Canadian database of CHD patients with up to 35 years of follow-up. CHD patients aged 40 to 65 years with influenza virus-associated hospitalizations between 2010 and 2017 were id

Heart Failure Post-SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: The Additive Value of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

In this case series, we describe the diagnosis of post-COVID-19 myocarditis in asymptomatic patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and a mild COVID-19 disease course. These patients were referred for CMR due to electrocardiographic and echocardiographic alterations, which did not exist before COVID-19 infection. CMR identified the presence of severe myocardial inflammation in all patients based on abnormally elevated myocardial T2 ratio, late gadolinium enhancement, native T1 mapping, T2 mapping, and extracellular volume fraction. This was paired with concurrent impairment of left ven

Cumulative incidence and mortality rate of cardiovascular complications due to laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Influenza infection is associated with cardiovascular complications that range significantly in presentation and severity. The cumulative incidence of cardiovascular complications due to laboratory-confirmed influenza, however, is not reported in the literature. We conducted a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis to evaluate the cumulative incidence and mortality rate of influenza virus-related cardiovascular complications in hospitalized patients. We searched the PubMed and EMBASE databases for studies reporting acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure (HF), arrhythmia o

How is ischemic stroke linked to a COVID-19-infected patient different from other cardiovascular risk factors? a case report.

UNLABELLED: Ischemic stroke is a recognized neurological consequence of an acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) directly infects endothelial cells, generating widespread endothelial inflammation. This may be the mechanism leading to an ischemic stroke. Infection with SARS-CoV-2 and inflammatory responses cause vascular damage, hypercoagulability, thrombin activation, platelet aggregation, and plaque shedding as a result of hemodynamic alterations, which increase the risk of ischemic stroke. CASE PRESENTATION: On 19 S

In-depth cardiovascular and pulmonary assessments in children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome after SARS-CoV-2 infection: A case series study.

We assessed PET-CT myocardial blood flow (MBF) using N-13 ammonia, brachial flow-mediated dilation, and cardiopulmonary exercise test in five post-discarged MIS-C survivors. None of the patients (median age: 9, range: 7-18 years; 3 females; 2 males) had preexisting pediatric chronic conditions. At the follow-up visit, two patients exhibited severe perfusion defect developed in the left ventricular cavity, suggesting extensive myocardial ischemia (MBF <2.0) and one patient showed persistent mild pericardial effusion. Others two patients demonstrated endothelial dysfunction. Nevertheless, all pa

Cardiovascular/Stroke Risk Stratification in Diabetic Foot Infection Patients Using Deep Learning-Based Artificial Intelligence: An Investigative Study.

A diabetic foot infection (DFI) is among the most serious, incurable, and costly to treat conditions. The presence of a DFI renders machine learning (ML) systems extremely nonlinear, posing difficulties in CVD/stroke risk stratification. In addition, there is a limited number of well-explained ML paradigms due to comorbidity, sample size limits, and weak scientific and clinical validation methodologies. Deep neural networks (DNN) are potent machines for learning that generalize nonlinear situations. The objective of this article is to propose a novel investigation of deep learning (DL) solutio

Insulin resistance predicts endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected persons on long-term highly active antiretroviral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disease risk among persons with HIV is likely multifactorial, thus testing a variety of available noninvasive vascular ultrasound and other surrogate tests may yield differing results. To address this issue, we assessed multiple metabolic and clinical predictors of endothelial function and carotid intima-media thickness in HIV-infected subjects and compared results with HIV-negative controls. DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional study of 50 HIV-infected, healthy adults on stable highly active antiretroviral therapy matched to 50 HIV-negative controls by age, sex, rac

Infection-Independent Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Mortality: An Illinois Vital Records System Analysis, 2019-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Infection mitigation practices and health care infrastructure challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in medical care and chronic disease detection and management. These challenges also hindered healthy lifestyle choices. We analyzed diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality independent of COVID-19 comorbidity to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on chronic disease mortality. METHODS: We obtained Illinois Vital Records System death records for calendar year 2019 (January 1 through December 1, 2019) and COVID-19 year 1 (March 16, 2020, through March

Rationale, design, and baseline characteristicss of the effect of PCSK9 inhibition on cardiovascular risk in treated HIV infection: EPIC-HIV randomized clinical trial.

RATIONALE: People with HIV (PWH) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Moderate lipid lowering with statins has been demonstrated to reduce cardiovascular risk among PWH. Accordingly, evaluation of more potent lipid-lowering strategies for prevention is needed, especially for PWH at higher risk. Prior research suggests that proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors safely lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 60% among people with HIV, but the impact of PCSK9 inhibitors on arterial inflammation, endothelial function, coronary plaque, or markers of immun

Risk factors for long-term cardiovascular post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 infection: A nested case-control study in Hong Kong.

People with COVID-19 can experience post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC). Studies on risk factors of PASC outcomes are ongoing, especially for endocrine system-related diseases that may impact the cardiovascular system. Cardiac-related PASC is one of the burdens after COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to examine the risk factors of cardiac-related PASC. In this nested case-control study, we obtained electronic health records (EHRs) database from the Hong Kong Hospital Authority. We defined cases as patients with at least one cardiac-related PASC and controls as patients without any card

Hypertension and traditional risk factors for cardiovascular diseases among treatment naïve HIV- infected adults initiating antiretroviral therapy in Urban Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become an important cause of ill health and death among people living with HIV and/or AIDS (PLHIV) in the antiretroviral therapy (ART) era. There is scarce data on the burden of hypertension (HTN) and risk factors for CVDs among PLHIV in developing countries, including Tanzania during the ART era. OBJECTIVE(S): To determine the prevalence of HTN and risk factors for CVDs among ART naïve PLHIV initiating ART. METHODS: We analysed baseline data of 430 clinical trial participants on the effect of low-dose aspirin on HIV disease progression among H

Behavioral cardiovascular risk factors in HIV-infected people in France: Diversity of profiles across groups requires an urgent and tailored preventive approach.

BACKGROUND: Among people living with HIV, cardiovascular risk could be markedly reduced through lifestyle improvement. However, to date behavioral cardiovascular risk factors (other than tobacco smoking) have been poorly investigated among them. Additionally, although co-occurrence of risk factors might amplify the deleterious effects of each risk factor, little is known about such risk factors clustering in this population. We aimed to examine levels, determinants and clustering of the major behavioral cardiovascular risk factors in the French HIV-infected population, in order to better targe

Changes over time in risk factors for cardiovascular disease and use of lipid-lowering drugs in HIV-infected individuals and impact on myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Because of the known relationship between exposure to combination antiretroviral therapy and cardiovascular disease (CVD), it has become increasingly important to intervene against risk of CVD in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. We evaluated changes in risk factors for CVD and the use of lipid-lowering therapy in HIV-infected individuals and assessed the impact of any changes on the incidence of myocardial infarction. METHODS: The Data Collection on Adverse Events of Anti-HIV Drugs Study is a collaboration of 11 cohorts of HIV-infected patients that included f

Venous thromboembolism and major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with hip fractures suffering from SARS-CoV-2 infection: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures represent 1 of the most common injuries in older adults. They are associated with increased perioperative morbidity and mortality. Additionally, current research suggests that SARS-COV-2 infection may worsen the prognosis of the hip fracture patients who undergo hip fixation. The aims of the present study were: (1) to determine the rate of specific adverse events including VTE (venous thromboembolism) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with hip fracture and concomitant SARS-CoV-2 infection undergoing surgery; and (2) to examine if the aforem
