Carnivore conservation needs evidence-based livestock protection.

Carnivore predation on livestock often leads people to retaliate. Persecution by humans has contributed strongly to global endangerment of carnivores. Preventing livestock losses would help to achieve three goals common to many human societies: preserve nature, protect animal welfare, and safeguard human livelihoods. Between 2016 and 2018, four independent reviews evaluated >40 years of research on lethal and nonlethal interventions for reducing predation on livestock. From 114 studies, we find a striking conclusion: scarce quantitative comparisons of interventions and scarce comparisons again

Muscle mercury and selenium in fishes and semiaquatic mammals from a selenium-deficient area.

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare total mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and Se:Hg molar ratios in fish muscles (phytophages n=3; benthophages n=32; predators n=5) and semiaquatic carnivores, including piscivores (the European otter n=8, the feral American mink n=7) and the omnivorous raccoon (n=37) from a riverine European ecosystem in a Se-deficient area. The Hg concentration in fish reached 0.337μg/g dry weight, dw (0.084μg/g wet weight, ww). We found significant differences among Hg levels in tested vertebrate groups (predators vs benthophages: 0.893 vs 0.281μg/g; piscivores

Epidemiology of Ancylostoma spp. in the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in the Doñana National Park, south-west Spain.

The epidemiology of Ancylostoma spp. was studied in the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in the Doñana National Park, south-west Spain. Faecal samples were collected throughout a complete annual cycle (August 1997 to September 1998). The overall egg prevalence of Ancylostoma spp. was 57.8%. The pattern of abundance of Ancylostoma spp. eggs in faeces was overdispersed. Juvenile lynx demonstrated a statistically higher prevalence and abundance of Ancylostoma spp. than in adults. These levels of egg output (maximum 21195 epg), as previously reported in free ranging large felid cubs, could

[Formation sources and topographic characteristics of the pelvic plexus in furry animals of Canidae and Mustelidae families].

Using preparation methods, the topography and the formation sources of pelvic plexus (PP) were studied in animals of Canidae (silver-black fox, blue fox) and Mustelidae (sable, American mink) families. Maximal differences in PP topography and PP-forming nerves were found between species (Canidae-Mustelidae), whereas the intraspecies differences were less pronounced. Intraspecies sex-associated differences in PP topography are associated with only quantitative parameters, while those in PP formation sources and in peculiarities of PP-forming nerves' branching pattern are qualitative in nature.

Meniscal ossicles in large non-domestic cats.

Radiographs of the stifles of 6 species of 34 large, non-domestic cats were reviewed foremost for the presence of meniscal ossicles and then for the presence of the other potential four sesamoids. The animals in the review included 12 lions, 7 tigers, 7 cougars, 3 leopards, 3 bobcats, and 2 jaguars. Fluoroscopy, arthrography, computed tomography, necropsy, and histology were also used to evaluate the stifles of one tiger after euthanasia. Ossicles were found in the region of the cranial horn of the medial meniscus in most of the lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. These ossicles were found i

Odontoclastic resorptive lesion of a mandibular right first molar in a cougar.

A two-year old neuteral/male cougar (Felis concolor) was presented because of abnormal eating habits and an irregularity of the mandibular right first molar that was noted by the caretaker. Oral examination and dental radiographs showed a lesion consistent with odontoclastic resorption of the mandibular right first molar, and a crown fracture and dilacerated root of the maxillary right first incisor. Exodontic therapy was performed on both teeth. The caretaker reported no problems associated with the patient's oral cavity 10-months following treatment.

Tuberculosis in badgers; a review of the disease and its significance for other animals.

This review examines the current state of knowledge of aspects of tuberculosis in the badger. The gross pathology and pathogenesis are elaborated as well as the immune mechanism, diagnosis of infection and excretion and viability of infected products. The epidemiology in badgers is considered, as is the significance of infection in this species for other wildlife species as well as domestic animals sharing the same habitat. Trials of the effects of the removal of badgers on the occurrence of tuberculosis in cattle are summarised. It is concluded that badgers are well adapted as the primary hos

Peritoneal coccidioidomycosis in a mountain lion in California.

An adult mountain lion (Felis concolor) from the vicinity of Weldon, California (USA) was necropsied following euthanasia due to emaciation and proximity to semi-rural housing. There were spherules consistent with Coccidioides immitis within peritoneal surfaces with granulomatous inflammation and fungi consistent with C. immitis were cultured from abdominal fluid. This is the first reported case of coccidioidomycosis in a wild mountain lion.

Disseminated histoplasmosis in a badger (Meles meles) in Denmark.

We report the first case of disseminated histoplasmosis in an animal in Scandinavia. Yeast cells compatible with those of Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum were found in the skin, liver, spleen, a kidney, and a lymph node of a wild badger (Meles meles). The diagnosis was confirmed by electron microscopy and immunofluorescence staining of the yeast cells in tissue sections.

Rabies.

Human rabies is extremely rare and canine rabies is largely controlled in the United States. Wild animals are now responsible for most of the rabies prevention costs and postexposure treatments in the United States, either by direct exposure of humans or by exposure of domestic animals. Although the situation is similar in most other developed countries, canine rabies remains widespread and a substantial risk to persons traveling in developing countries, where millions of people are exposed and tens of thousands die of rabies each year. People living in the United States should be advised to a

[Histological pattern of the tongue in the Japanese weasels, Mustela itatsi, with special reference to the morphology and distribution of papillae, taste buds and lingual glands].

Light and scanning electron microscopical demonstrations were carried out on the tongues of adult Japanese weasels (Mustela itatsi). Four types of papillae are present on the mucous membrane of the tongue; filiform, fungiform, vallate and foliate papillae. The vallate and foliate papillae are furnished with taste buds. Three types of lingual glands are present in the tongue; mucous (Weber's), serous (Ebner's) and mixed glands. Weber's glands are compound tubular glands which are well developed near the radix. Ebner's glands are compound tubular glands connected with the vallate papillae. Mixed

Recovery and identification of Pasteurella multocida from mammals and fleas collected during plague investigations.

During the 12-yr period, 1973-1984, 243 isolates of Pasteurella multocida were recovered or identified from specimens submitted for plague tests. Of the isolates, 79% were from rodents, 10% from lagomorphs, and 7% from carnivores; eight isolates were recovered from pools of rodent or carnivore fleas, and two were recovered from cat-bite wounds of human patients. No correlations of host or geographic sources, season, or biotypic or serotypic characteristics were found. Of the rodent strains serotyped, most were found to be serotypes 1A or 3A, which suggests a possible epizootiologic role for ro

The epizootiology and pathology of sarcoptic mange in coyotes, Canis latrans, from south Texas.

An epizootic of sarcoptic mange in coyotes from south Texas, Canis latrans , was studied over a 7-yr period, 1975 through 1981. From a four-county area centered in Webb County, Texas the epizootic radiated centrifugally to include a 27-county area. The disease progressed from initial, scabby encrustations on the ischium and fore and hind legs to severe, thickened, slate-gray hyperkeratotic lesions with almost complete alopecia. There were significant decreases in alpha-globulin and albumin, significant increases in gamma-globulin, and significant decreases in fat deposits and total body weight

An outbreak of cowpox in captive cheetahs: virological and epidemiological studies.

This paper describes virological and epidemiological features of an infection which killed two of three affected cheetahs at Whipsnade Park in 1977. Two animals had profuse skin lesions and the third had an acute haemorrhagic pneumonia. The outbreak was shown to be caused by cowpox virus. Cowpox virus is believed to circulate in small wild animals, but the source of infection was not traced despite virological and serological tests on 93 captive and 102 wild animals. Sub-clinical infections did not occur in susceptible contact cheetahs. Immune globulin did not influence the outcome and smallpo
