The structure of the ovary and oogenesis of Poecilia mexicana from an active sulfur spring cave is documented. Poecilia mexicana is the only poeciliid adapted to a subterranean environment with high hydrogen sulfide levels and extreme hypoxic conditions. Twenty females were captured throughout one year at Cueva del Azufre, located in the State of Tabasco in Southern Mexico. Ovaries were processed with histological techniques. P. mexicana has a single, ovoid ovary with ovigerous lamella that project to the ovarian lumen. The ovarian wall presents abundant loose connective tissue, numerous melan

BACKGROUND: Cerebral hydatid cyst is among the rare presentations of echinococcosis. Almost all the reported cases of intracranial hydatid cysts are in the cortical regions (parietal lobe in the territory of the middle cerebral artery), and all have been removed surgically using the water jet dissection technique. However, in locations in which there are several neuronal structures, such as the cerebellopontine angle, this method might not be applicable.

Here we present the results of a taphonomic study of the faunal assemblage associated with the hominin fossils (Australopithecus sediba) from the Malapa site. Results include estimation of body part representation, mortality profiles, type of fragmentation, identification of breakage patterns, and microscopic analysis of bone surfaces. The diversity of the faunal spectrum, presence of animals with climbing proclivities, abundance of complete and/or articulated specimens, occurrence of antimeric sets of elements, and lack of carnivore-modified bones, indicate that animals accumulated via a natu

Animals that colonize dark and nutrient-poor subterranean environments evolve numerous extreme phenotypes. These include dramatic changes to the craniofacial complex, many of which are under genetic control. These phenotypes can demonstrate asymmetric genetic signals wherein a QTL is detected on one side of the face but not the other. The causative gene(s) underlying QTL are difficult to identify with limited genomic resources. We approached this task by searching for candidate genes mediating fragmentation of the third suborbital bone (SO3) directly inferior to the orbit of the eye. We integr

A detailed taphonomic analysis is reported for a sample of the larger mammalian faunal assemblage (>4.5 kg live body weight) from Blombos Cave. The analysis provides an assessment of human involvement in the accumulation and modification of the faunal assemblage, and precedes equally detailed analyses and separate reports of Middle Stone Age (MSA) butchery, transport, and hunting behaviour. At Blombos, there are clear differences in the relative abundances of ungulate body size classes, with the lower MSA phases (upper/lower M2 and M3) showing a high representation of size 1 ungulates relative

White-nose syndrome, caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), is a major fungal disease threatening hibernating bats. Cave soils can serve as environmental reservoirs for Pd, yet the microbial and biochemical mechanisms underlying naturally low Pd burdens in some cave environments remain poorly understood. Here, we integrated soil microbiome profiling, metagenomics, metabolomics, multi-omics network analysis, and in vitro validation to investigate the ecological and functional basis of differential Pd loads in hibernating bat caves in Northeast China. The three caves shared cold, humid, an…

Liquid biopsy guided anti-EGFR rechallenge therapy is gaining ground as a potential option for patient with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer. However, the identification of potential biomarkers to implement patient's stratification is required. The CAVE-2 GOIM trial investigated the role of rechallenge with cetuximab ± avelumab in patients with circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) (assessed with the FoundationOne Liquid assay) RAS/BRAF wild type (WT) mCRC. Correlation with molecular profile, ctDNA tumor fraction (TF), and clinicopathological characteristics was performed. In patients with "neg

This case report details a 50-year-old male with a ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst in the right lateral wall of the cavernous sinus-Meckel cave area, leading to delayed cerebral ischemia postsurgery. The rupture released lipid components, potentially causing inflammatory vascular reactions and ischemic events. Initial symptoms included binocular diplopia and later progressed to limb weakness and facial twitching. Imaging revealed cerebral infarction and vascular stenosis, which were managed with nimodipine, steroids, and other therapies, resulting in significant recovery. This case highligh

Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE) is a virtual reality (VR) environment that has not been fully studied due to its high cost and complexity in system integration. Previous CAVE-related studies mainly focused on comparing its effectiveness with other learning media, such as textbooks, desktop VR, or head-mounted display (HMD) VR. In this study, through the utilization of CAVE in a meteorology class, we concentrated on CAVE itself, measured how CAVE impacted learners' learning outcomes before and after using CAVE in an actual ongoing undergraduate-level class, and investigated how learne

BACKGROUND: Given the absence of consensus diagnostic criteria for giant cell arteritis, clinicians may encounter difficulty with identification of new-onset headache in patients older than age 50 years presenting with visual changes and elevated inflammatory markers, particularly if temporal artery biopsies are performed and negative.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 57-year-old white man with headache, diplopia, and jaw paresthesia initially diagnosed and managed as steroid-refractory biopsy-negative giant cell arteritis. Further investigation disclosed evidence of soft tissue infi

The burden of corneal blindness and visual deficiency can be felt worldwide. Its association with several endemic diseases such as childhood blindness, trauma, infectious keratitis (including variants caused by herpes, hanseniasis, and fungi), vitamin A deficiency, diabetes mellitus, and other dry eye syndromes reflects its poorly understood underlying mechanisms and suggests that the actual frequency of the disease is underestimated. The low effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic strategies against corneal scarring or deformity predicts a high frequency of patients with corneal blindness

Geißenklösterle Cave (Germany) is one of the most important Paleolithic sites in Europe, as it is characterized by human occupation during the Middle and early Upper Paleolithic. Aurignacian layers prior to 37-38 ka cal BP feature both musical and figurative art objects that are linked to the early arrival in Europe of Homo sapiens. Middle Paleolithic layers yielded lithic artifacts attributed to Homo neanderthalensis. Since human occupation at the site is attributed to both Neanderthals and modern humans, chronology is essential to clarify the issues of Neanderthal disappearance, modern human

The late Pleistocene faunal assemblage from Bat Cave, central Ozarks, Missouri provides an opportunity to assess specific aspects of behavior, ecology, and ontogeny of the Rancholabrean species Platygonus compressus. All identifiable elements referable to this taxon were catalogued and examined, and a minimum number of individuals of 73 was determined for the sample. Evidence of seasonal behavioral patterns are reported for the first time in a fossil peccary. Maturation of individuals was assessed using the tooth eruption sequence and occlusal wear patterns for all tooth-bearing mandibular ele

The relationship between local and global climatic variations and the origin and dispersal of Homo sapiens in Africa is complex, and North Africa may have played a major role in these events. In Morocco, very few studies are specifically dedicated to small fossil vertebrates, and neither taphonomic nor palaeoecological studies have been undertaken on these taxa, particularly in archaeological contexts. The late Pleistocene to middle Holocene succession of El Harhoura 2 cave, situated in the region of Témara, yields an exceptionally rich small vertebrate assemblage. We present the results of a

We report on new research at Swartkrans Cave, South Africa, that provides evidence of two previously unrealized artifact- and fossil-bearing deposits. These deposits underlie a speleothem dated by the uranium-thorium disequilibrium technique to 110,000+/-1,980 years old, the first tightly constrained, geochronological date available for the site. Recovered fauna from the two underlying deposits-including, prominently, the dental remains of Paranthropus (Australopithecus) robustus from the uppermost layer (Talus Cone Deposit)-indicate a significantly older, late Pliocene or early Pleistocene ag

The purpose of this study was to describe the technique for midline biportal endoscopic decompression (MBED) for lumbar canal stenosis by a new "under the cave" decompression technique: a paradigm shift in biportal endoscopic decompression. Laminectomy with/without fusion and facet-preserving microforaminotomy has been performed as conventional surgical treatments for lumbar canal stenosis (LCS). Recently, endoscopic spinal surgery has been introduced as a minimally invasive therapeutic modality of LCS by several authors. Here, we describe the surgical steps and technical pearls of MBED with "

The Asellus aquaticus species complex, a freshwater isopod crustacean, includes surface and cave ecomorphs that differ markedly in eye and pigmentation phenotypes. Previous genetic studies in Slovenian cave populations revealed that the same genomic regions underlie eye and pigment loss across multiple cave populations, suggesting strong genetic constraints on these traits. To test the generality of this pattern, we examined Asellus infernus, a cave population from Mangalia, Romania, that inhabits thermal, sulfidic waters and is geographically distant from the Slovenian cave populations. Based

BACKGROUND: Nurses are the primary implementers of enteral nutrition therapy and need to be trained in relevant skills, especially in the care of critically ill patients with neurological damage. Traditional educational methods fail to present the complex changes in the condition of critically ill patients and therefore do not meet current educational and practice requirements. The effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) in nursing education has been demonstrated. However, there is a paucity of evidence for using cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE), a novel VR technology, in nursing educat

Most cave formation requires mass separation from a host rock in a process that operates outward from permeable pathways to create the cave void. Given the poor solubility of Fe(III) phases, such processes are insufficient to account for the significant iron formation caves (IFCs) seen in Brazilian banded iron formations (BIF) and associated rock. In this study we demonstrate that microbially-mediated reductive Fe(III) dissolution is solubilizing the poorly soluble Fe(III) phases to soluble Fe(II) in the anoxic zone behind cave walls. The resultant Fe(III)-depleted material (termed sub muros) …
