Unlined silicate restorations were placed in intact and experimentally altered monkey, teeth. Pulpitis had been induced experimentally by sealing soft carious human dentin in Class V cavities with amalgam for 7 d. These fillings were then removed and healing allowed by inserting zinc oxide/eugenol cement. A cementable endosteal blade implant has been developed and evaluated. Inherent in the design are the following factors: minimization of stress concentrators, ease of implantation, and high resistance to loosening. Other potential advantages of this design as compared with conventional endosteal blade implants include reduced hazards of postoperative infection and reduced likelihood of metallic corrosion. Six conventional endosteal implants and six cementable implants were installed in steer mandibles using standard dental surgical techniques and Simplex-brand methyl methacrylate bone cement.

A tougher, more fatigue-resistant bone cement consisting of short, highmodulus carbon fibers dispersed randomly in normal ply(methyl methacrylate) bone cement has been developed. Fatigue and impact tests are reported that demonstrate the superior fracture resistance and prolonged load-carrying ability of this system. The use of this carbon fiber-reinforced bone cement in the treatment of a pathological fracture of the femur associated with neoplastic disease of the bone is reported. The tougher cement has provided long-term stability of the fracture.
