Since 1959, we have used a superior extension of the anterior approach to the cervical spine of Robinson and Smith in a consecutive series of seventeen patients. This approach provided anterior access to the neural elements from the clivus to the body of the third cervical vertebra, without the need for posterior dissection of the carotid sheath or entrance into the hypopharynx or oral cavity. It also provided adequate exposure for the insertion of iliac or fibular strut grafts, which was necessary in thirteen patients. The approach gave excellent exposure for anterior intralesional excision o

Normally the 7th cervical vertebra (C7) has a long non-bifid spine. A bifid spine is a feature of typical cervical vertebrae such as C3--C6. In contrast to past studies, which have described a bifid spine in the C3--C6 cervical vertebrae, this study is a report on the presence of a duplicated spinous process in the C7 vertebra with an intervening space. The presence of such anomalies may be associated with other congenital anomalies and needs a careful and thorough clinical approach. This is an extremely rare finding which may be of clinical interest to radiologists, neurologists, orthopaedic …

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc calcification is a rare condition in children; in most cases, it is asymptomatic and therefore not diagnosed.
CASE REPORTS: In our study, we present a case of idiopathic intervertebral disc calcification within the cervical segment, at the level of C2/C3 and C4/C5 vertebrae in a 5-year-old girl with torticollis. Basic neurological examination supplemented by X-ray examination was performed, showing calcification within the cervical segment at the level of C2/C3 and C4/C5 vertebrae.
CONCLUSIONS: In order to complement the diagnostics, a CT scan of the cervical

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, typical radiological findings in the cervical spine of patients with diastrophic dysplasia (DD) have been k … ulated from the measurements. The shape of the vertebrae was assessed. Displacement and movement of cervical vertebrae in neutral and bending radiographs were measured. RESULTS. The average lordosis in the last radiograph was 17(degrees) (range 4 degrees -55(degrees)). Five (4%) patients had a cervical kyphosis with an average of 92(degrees) (range 10-165(degrees)) …

A male deformed Korean native calf was examined macroscopically. The deformed calf had no caudal vertebral columns from 5th lumbar vertebra, sacrum and coccygeal vertebrae. The spinal cord was terminated in the vertebral foramen of the 3rd lumbar vertebra. The cervical vertebrae had scoliosis and the 3rd and 4th cervical vertebrae were fused. The 2nd and 3rd lumbar vertebrae were fused and the left and right transverse processes of the 4th lumbar vertebra articulated with ala of the ilium. The rectum was greatly expanded by the imperforate anus and a rectourethral fistula was formed between th…

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of chronological age with cervical vertebrae skeletal maturation, frontal sinus width and antegonial notch depth and a correlation, if any, among the three variables.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The samples were derived from lateral cephalometric radiographs of 80 subjects (40 males, 40 females; age range: 10 to 19 years). Cervical vertebral development was evaluated by the method of Hassel and Farman, frontal sinus width was measured by the method described by Ertürk and antegonial notch depth as described by Singer et al. The Pea…

Fusion of the cervical spine in Globicephala macrorhyncha is a prenatal rather than a postnatal phenomenon which encompasses all cervical vertebra. This results in a relatively short, nonarticulated, composite cervical spine in this particular species. Cervicothoracic spine segments removed from fetuses demonstrated complete fusion of all cervical vertebra commencing during early prenatal development. C1 and C2 initially developed as a composite central cartilaginous unit, although laterally there was some separation through rudimentary interzone formation. However, C3 through C7 formed indivi

OBJECTIVES: One of the most contentious issues in paleoanthropology is the nature of the last common ancestor of humans and our closest living relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos (panins). The numerical composition of the vertebral column has featured prominently, with multiple models predicting distinct patterns of evolution and contexts from which bipedalism evolved. Here, we study total numbers of vertebrae from a large sample of hominoids to quantify variation in and patterns of regional and total numbers of vertebrae in hominoids.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compile and study a large sample

A patient with cervical myelopathy caused by marked degenerative alterations of the cervical spinal column at the level of cervical vertebrae 3/4 and relative spinal canal stenosis in the area of cervical vertebrae 5-7 was treated in the department of neurosurgery because of progressive myatrophy and paresis of muscles innervated from cervical nerves 5-7. The operation was performed with vertebrectomy of cervical vertebra 6, implantation of a Harms titanium cage with autograft and a plate and spongy bone screw fixation system. There exists an unusual--and not often publicized--complication dur…

The evolution of vertebral fusion is a poorly understood phenomenon that results in the loss of mobility between sequential vertebrae. Non-pathological fusion of the anterior cervical vertebrae has evolved independently in numerous extant and extinct mammals and reptiles, suggesting that the formation of a 'syncervical' is an adaptation that arose to confer biomechanical advantage(s) in these lineages. We review syncervical anatomy and evolution in a broad phylogenetic context for the first time and provide a comprehensive summary of proposed adaptive hypotheses. The syncervical generally cons…

Little research has been reported on evaluating the safety of the fixation construct in cervical kyphosis correction. In this study, we prop … nts and lent stability to vertebra fusion, no failure was found in the finite element (FE) model of cervical vertebrae. The deformation surrounding the screw trajectories were concentrated to the lateral sides of trajectories, recommending that the shape of the anterior cervical plate conforming to the curvature of the vertebra and screws fully inserted into vertebr …

The objective of the present study was to elucidate the specific features of the lesions of the cervical spine in the driver and the front-seat passenger of a modern car after the frontal crash. We made use of the archival materials of forensic medical expertises concerning the traffic accidents carried out in the city of Moscow during the period from 2005 to 2012. The study was focused on the analysis of the character of the fractures of cervical vertebrae in the drivers (n = 55) and the front-seat passengers (n = 85) of a modern motor vehicle involved in a traffic accident. It was shown that…

Thoracic disc herniations are commonly found in asymptomatic individuals, sometimes with genetic predisposition. Congenital fusions of cervical vertebrae occur in Klippel-Feil syndrome, which may be asymptomatic or cause compressive myelitis due to cervical instability or associated herniated discs. We report the case of a 72-year-old man with monophasic acute transverse myelitis probably caused by herpes simplex virus, coexistent with fused cervical vertebrae (C4-C5) and thoracic herniated discs. Establishment of the aetiology in cases of transverse acute myelitis can constitute a challenge i…

Within Avemetatarsalia, postcranial skeletal pneumaticity (PSP) occurs in pterosaurs, as well as theropod (including extant Aves) and saurop … s, Pantydraco and probably Thecodontosaurus. It is possible that the neural arches of the posterior cervical vertebrae of Thecodontosaurus possess PSP, but this can only be interpreted from broken transverse cross-sections and not CT scans. The posterior cervical vertebrae of Ruehleia possess PSP in the neural arches; however, their corresponding centra, along with …

Postnatal growth patterns within the vertebral column may be informative about body proportions and regionalization. We measured femur lengt … ot differ greatly between themselves in their strong integration, suggesting that the growth of the cervical vertebrae is constrained by the mechanical requirements of the head. Regionalization of the remainder of the vertebral column is less clearly defined but may be associated with wave form propagation incident upon locomotion, and by locomotory changes occasion …

Cervical spine injuries associated with three-point fixation lap-sash seat belts result from impact against the sash. While such injuries are infrequent and often without serious neurologic sequelae, they may produce serious deficits with grave injuries. Flexion-extension fractures of the lower cervical vertebrae, fractures of the transverse and spinous processes of the lower cervical and uppermost thoracic vertebrae, discal disruptions, and brachial plexus avulsions may occur. Of the 3 patients reported here, 2 escaped serious damage.

Cervical spondylolysis with spondylolisthesis is a complex abnormality involving the posterior elements of the cervical vertebra, and anterolisthesis of the same vertebra. Cervical spondylolysis is defined as a corticated cleft between the superior and inferior articular facets of the articular "pillar", the cervical equivalent of the pars intraarticularis in the lumbar spine. The typical radiological features of this condition are as follows: 1. Spondylolysis (a break in the "pillar" on one or both sides) 2. Spina bifida of dysplastic vertebra 3. Affection of posterior intervertebral joints (

This paper provides a metric analysis of the Neandertal cervical spine in relation to modern human variation. All seven cervical vertebrae have been analysed. Metric data from eight Neandertal individuals are compared with a large sample of modern humans. The significance of morphometric differences is tested using both z-scores and two-tailed Wilcoxon signed rank tests. The results identify significant metric and morphological differences between Neandertals and modern humans in all seven cervical vertebrae. Neandertal vertebrae are mediolaterally wider and dorsoventrally longer than modern h…

BACKGROUND: Reduced spinal canal anteroposterior (AP) diameter and AP-transverse diameter ratio have been linked to the development of spinal cord injury and myelopathy. Previously unpublished data has suggested Maori and Pacifica individuals may have narrower cervical spine canals than their NZ European counterparts.
PURPOSE: We evaluate the existence of potential differences in dimensions of the sub-axial cervical spine canal between New Zealand European, Māori and Polynesian individuals.
STUDY DESIGN: A computed tomography (CT) analysis of 645 intact adult sub-axial cervical vertebrae fro…
