Interference of dextran in biuret-type assays of serum proteins.

Dextran interference in biuret-type assays of total serum proteins was investigated in a Belgian National External Quality Assurance Survey with 256 participants. In vitro supplementation of therapeutic (10% Gentran 70) dextran concentrations showed a broadly varying (from 0 to 20%) negative interference. The analytical interference was found to depend on both the sodium hydroxide and tartrate concentrations in the reagent formulation. The dry chemistry biuret method was not affected by the dextran interference. In a number of cases, the effects observed may be of clinical importance. Both cli

Green, renewable, or low-carbon? A framework for informed solvent selection in pharmaceutical sciences.

Pharmaceutical companies have largely committed to achieving net-zero goals with both short-term and long-term science-based targets. At the same time, drug quality, safety and regulatory compliance must continue to be met. While solvent sustainability has been widely discussed, distinctions between intrinsic hazard, feedstock origin, and lifecycle emissions remain unclear in pharmaceutical contexts. One of the largest contributors to environmental impacts within the pharmaceutical supply chain are solvents. These chemicals are a major source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), resource consumption, a

Multidimensional Quantitative Analysis of Biological Responses to DNA Nanoassemblies with Defined Structure and Surface Chemistry.

DNA nanoassemblies (DNs) have emerged as programmable platforms for biomedical applications; however, a quantitative understanding of how structure and surface chemistry jointly govern their biological behavior remains limited. Here, we establish a multidimensional analytical framework to systematically quantify structure-surface-function relationships in DNs. Representative DNs with distinct structural architectures, including a one-dimensional rod-like six-helix bundle (6HB), a two-dimensional planar three-point star (3PS), and a three-dimensional tetrahedron (TDN), along with their choleste

Green Analytical Techniques for Impurity Determination in Pharmaceuticals.

Green analytical chemistry (GAC) aims to achieve faster, safer, accurate, and sustainable analysis by minimizing the hazardous impact of organic solvents on the environment. Here, the focus will be on impurity profiling of pharmaceuticals. This can be done by employing green chromatographic techniques using eco-friendly solvents, advanced spectroscopic approaches, microextraction, and miniaturization techniques. Pharmaceutical analysis's greenness can be evaluated using various assessment tools and the advanced analytical greenness metric (AGREE). This review comparatively discusses all these

Highly parallel simulation tool for the design of isotachophoresis experiments.

BACKGROUND: Isotachophoresis (ITP) is a well-established electrokinetic method for separation and preconcentration of analytes. Several simulation tools for ITP have been published, but their use for experimental design is limited by the computational time for a single run and/or by the number of conditions that can be investigated per simulation run. A large fraction of the existing solvers also do not account for ionic strength effects, which can influence whether an analyte focuses in ITP. There is currently no publicly available tool for the easy and rapid design of ITP experiments. RESUL

Assessing the Greenness and Environmental Friendliness of Analytical Methods: Modern Approaches and Recent Computational Programs.

Environmental measures have drawn more attention recently as a means of identifying cost-effective, safe, and green approaches in analytical methods. As a result, white and green analytical chemistry was developed. Greenness, whiteness, and chemical risks are all measured under the general expression "environmental measurements." For the first time, the greenness, whiteness, and chemical risk-measuring programs are presented along with their histories, concepts, advantages, and disadvantages. The six scales that were published between 2020 and 2023, including the Analytical Greenness Calculato

Statistical insights into the role of HCN-mineral interactions in aqueous aerosols during chemical evolution.

The polymerization of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is considered a central route to molecular complexity in prebiotic chemistry, following the seminal synthesis of adenine reported by Oró. Here, we investigate how mineral identity and mineral loading modulate cyanide reactivity in aqueous aerosols using selected geologically relevant silicate, oxide, carbonate, sulfide, and mixed mineral substrates as simplified analogues of early planetary mineral-water interfaces. Using a target-agnostic, systems-level strategy, we combine complementary spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, such as FTIR sp

Investigation of ion formation generated by an easy-to-assemble dielectric barrier discharge plasma ionization source based on printed circuit boards.

This study presents a detailed investigation of a recently developed dielectric barrier discharge plasma ionization source based on printed circuit boards. Specifically, the reactant and product ions formed in positive and negative polarity, and the difference, when the analyte is guided through or bypasses the plasma of the developed plasma ionization source, were investigated. Therefore, the ionization source is coupled to a self-built ion mobility spectrometer coupled to a mass spectrometer to obtain detailed ion mobility and m/z information. As test compounds, 2-propanol, 2-butanol, 2-pent

Validation and interlaboratory comparison of anticoagulant rodenticide analysis in animal livers using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used to control rodent populations. Poisoning of non-target species can occur by accidental consumption of commercial formulations used for rodent control. A robust method for determining ARs in animal tissues is important for animal postmortem diagnostic and forensic purposes. We evaluated an ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) method to quantify 8 ARs (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, chlorophacinone, coumachlor, dicoumarol, difethialone, diphacinone, warfarin) in a wide range of animal (bovine, canine, chicken, equi

Determining the appropriate pretreatment procedures and the utility of liver tissue for bulk stable isotope (δ13 C and δ15 N) studies in sharks.

Stable-isotope analysis (SIA) provides a valuable tool to address complex questions pertaining to elasmobranch ecology. Liver, a metabolically active, high turnover tissue (~166 days for 95% turnover), has the potential to reveal novel insights into recent feeding/movement behaviours of this diverse group. To date, limited work has used this tissue, but ecological application of SIA in liver requires consideration of tissue preparation techniques given the potential for high concentrations of urea and lipid that could bias δ13 C and δ15 N values (i.e., result in artificially lower δ13 C and δ1

European survey on preanalytical sample handling - Part 2: Practices of European laboratories on monitoring and processing haemolytic, icteric and lipemic samples. On behalf of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) Working Group for the Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE).

INTRODUCTION: No guideline currently exists on how to detect or document haemolysis, icterus or lipemia (HIL) in blood samples, nor on subsequent use of this information. The EFLM WG-PRE has performed a survey for assessing current practices of European laboratories in HIL monitoring. This second part of two coherent articles is focused on HIL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online survey, containing 39 questions on preanalytical issues, was disseminated among EFLM member countries. Seventeen questions exclusively focused on assessment, management and follow-up actions of HIL in routine blood samp

Low-Power and High-Performance Trimethylamine Gas Sensor Based on n-n Heterojunction Microbelts of Perylene Diimide/CdS.

In this work, low-power and high-performance gas sensors toward trimethylamine (TMA) are presented for the food quality control in the Internet of Things. An amphiphilic perylene diimide derivative (1,6,7,12-tetra-chlorinated perylene- N-(2-hydroxyethyl)- N'-hexylamine-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic bisimide, TC-PDI) is synthesized and further employed to construct the organic microrods of TC-PDI and organic/inorganic microbelts of TC-PDI/CdS by a phase transfer method. Due to the formation of n-n heterojunctions, the TC-PDI/CdS microbelts exhibit higher conductivity than the TC-PDI microrods alone,

Investigation of transition ion ratio variation for liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry: A case study approach.

BACKGROUND: A transition ion ratio (TIR) is the ratio of one fragment over another from the same precursor and is frequently monitored in liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assays for analyte identification. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) C50-A guidelines give a static percent allowable TIR deviation based on the TIR level. Anecdotally, we observed failures of these rules for some of our LC-MS/MS assays. We determined what parameters may affect TIRs in a clinical setting and whether TIR variations may be analyte, matrix, instrument service, and/or

Enhanced fluorescence sensing of melamine based on thioglycolic acid-capped CdS quantum dots.

A sensitive and simple method for the determination of melamine (MA) was developed based on the fluorescence enhancement effect of MA for thioglycolic acid-capped (TGA-capped) CdS quantum dots (QDs). Under optimum conditions, a good linear relationship was obtained from 2.0 × 10(-9) to 5.0 × 10(-5)M. The detection limit was 1.0 × 10(-9)M, which was much lower than the safety limit (2.5 ppm in USA and the UK; 1 ppm for infant formula in China). The solution pH, the adding sequence of the buffer solution and MA and surface modifiers of CdS QDs greatly influenced the enhancement extent of MA for
