Mandatory reporting of child maltreatment when delivering family-based treatment for eating disorders: A framework analysis of practitioner experiences.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, evidence-based treatment guidelines emphasize the role of parents in first-line treatment approaches for child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. Yet there are no best practice guidelines for practitioners on the identification and reporting of suspicions and disclosures of child maltreatment to child protection services (CPS) in these circumstances. This is particularly concerning given that undetected and unreported child maltreatment may exacerbate the vulnerabilities of youth with mental illness. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to describe family-bas

Child Maltreatment and the Child Welfare System as Environmental Factors in the International Classification of Functioning.

The WHO defines child maltreatment as any form of neglect, exploitation, and physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, committed against children under the age of 18. Youth involved in the child welfare system report more maltreatment experiences and environmental turbulence (e.g., number of moves, caseworkers), placing them at greater risk for poorer physical and mental health. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) provides a framework to describe health conditions and severity of disabilities for an individual and/or group in the context of environmental f

Can a combination of interventions accelerate outcomes to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals for young children? Evidence from a longitudinal study in South Africa and Malawi.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify possible entry points for interventions that can act as development accelerators for children and adolescents in South Africa and Malawi. METHODS: This study was a secondary data analysis. Data were sourced from the Child Community Care longitudinal study which tracked child well-being outcomes among 989 children (4-13 years) and their caregivers affected by HIV and enrolled in community-based organizations in South Africa and Malawi. We examined associations between five hypothesized accelerating services/household provisions-measured as access at bas

Diagnosing child maltreatment in a welfare state: the dual role of Danish general practitioners in child protection.

Child maltreatment is a pervasive global concern, and general practitioners, like other health care professionals, are legally and ethically obliged to report suspicions of abuse or neglect. In practice, however, general practitioners face moral and practical dilemmas in balancing their duty to report with their commitment to care, as they seek to support children and families who may be at risk. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Danish general practice, this paper examines how these tensions unfold in everyday clinical encounters. It explores how general practitioners navigate the ambiguou

Shifting the focus of child and youth wellbeing programs from crisis to prevention: a mixed methods study of the role of First Nations' community-controlled organisations.

BACKGROUND: Australian governments and the First Nations Coalition of Peaks, through the Closing the Gap reforms, have committed to build the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled sector and increase decision making by community-controlled services. This paper describes a First Nations-led place-based research program with community-controlled health and youth service partners in Far North Queensland to understand and map the regional child and youth wellbeing service system and co-design strategies to improve service provision. METHODS: This mixed-method research was con

Parental Opioid Abuse: Barriers to Care, Policy, and Implications for Primary Care Pediatric Providers.

Parental opioid use is affecting the physical, developmental, and mental health of the pediatric population nationwide and raises questions of safety when these children remain in the care of opioid-addicted parents. Pediatric providers face many barriers to identifying and caring for children beyond the neonatal period who have been affected by parental opioid abuse both in utero and in the home. These barriers include communication between providers and services, identification of intrauterine exposure, parental opioid abuse screening, and knowledge of child protective services involvement. …

Pediatric sun exposure.

The risk of malignant melanoma may double if severe sunburns are experienced during childhood. Because children are exposed to sunlight for the longest period of time before age 21, regular use of sunscreen can reduce a child's lifetime risk of developing skin cancer. Therefore, preventive education is vital for parents of infants, preschool and school-age children, and adolescents. By assessing a child's risk factors, health care providers, teachers, and child-care professionals can incorporate preventive sun-safety education into their practice. This effort needs to occur at the community, s

The 'stolen generations' of mothers and daughters: child apprehension and enhanced HIV vulnerabilities for sex workers of Aboriginal ancestry.

OBJECTIVES: The number of children in care of the state continues to grow in BC, Canada with a historical legacy of child apprehension among criminalized and marginalized populations, particularly women of Aboriginal ancestry and sex workers. However, there is a paucity of research investigating child apprehension experiences among marginalized mothers. The objective of the current analysis is to examine the prevalence and correlates of child apprehensions among female sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: Analyses were drawn from the AESHA (An Evaluation of Sex Workers Health Access, 20

Women, children and adolescents in conflict countries: an assessment of inequalities in intervention coverage and survival.

INTRODUCTION: Conflict adversely impacts health and health systems, yet its effect on health inequalities, particularly for women and children, has not been systematically studied. We examined wealth, education and urban/rural residence inequalities for child mortality and essential reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health interventions between conflict and non-conflict low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: We carried out a time-series multicountry ecological study using data for 137 LMICs between 1990 and 2017, as defined by the 2019 World Bank classification. The

[Behavioral problems in child protection: Understanding and intervening from the concept of complex trauma].

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents supported by child protection services (CPS) represent a population exposed to repeated relational trauma that significantly increases the risk of developing complex trauma characterized by polymorphic symptomatology. The behavioral problems presented by adolescents followed by CPS may fit within this nosographic framework. They can lead to major difficulties in adapting to their environment, especially when the trajectory of polyvictimization is pronounced. Unfortunately, the failure of professionals to recognize this diagnosis remains frequent. As a result, institut

From Care to Corrections: A Scoping Review of Pathways from Child Protection to Adult Criminal Justice Systems.

Individuals who have experienced child protection system involvement are over-represented in criminal justice systems. This group faces greater risks of serious offending and justice system entrenchment relative to their peers without child protection system contact. Understanding the pathways from child protection to adult criminal justice system contact is critical for informing crime prevention policy and practice, yet most research on the maltreatment-offending relationship solely focuses on children's pathways from child protection to youth justice systems. This scoping review identified

Childhood Maltreatment and Psychosis: A Comparative Validity Study of Maltreatment Indices.

Childhood maltreatment is a robust risk factor for psychosis, but it remains unclear whether different measurement methods provide equivalent validity in predicting psychotic symptoms. This study compared the predictive validity of two common indices of maltreatment at age 12-children's self-report and Child Protective Services (CPS) reports-on the development of psychotic symptoms at age 18 using data from a large, multisite longitudinal study (N = 629). Consistent with prior research, agreement was low between indices, with the prevalence of self-reported maltreatment being 2-3 times higher.…
