Introduction Rabies is an important zoonosis that occurs in mammals, with bats acting as Lyssavirus reservoirs in urban, rural and natural areas. Rabies cases in bats have been recorded primarily in urban areas in Northwestern State of São Paulo since 1998. This study investigated the circulation of rabies virus by seeking to identify the virus in the brain in several species of bats in this region and by measuring rabies-virus neutralizing antibody levels in the hematophagous bat Desmodus rotundus. Methods From 2008 to 2012, 1,490 bat brain samples were sent to the Universidade Estadual Pauli

Complete genome sequencing of the Sokuluk virus (SOKV) isolated in Kyrgyzstan from bats Vespertilio pipistrellus and their obligatory parasites--Argasidae Koch, 1844, ticks was carried out. SOKV was classified as attributed to the Flaviviridae family, Flavivirus genus. The maximum homology (71% for nucleotide and 79% for amino acid sequences) was detected with respect to the Entebbe bat virus (ENTV). ENTV and SOKV form a group joining to the yellow fever virus (YFV) within the limits of the mosquito flavivirus branch. Close relation of SOKV with bat covers and human housings permits to assume

BACKGROUND: We assessed the scientific basis and practical implications of recommendations made since the late 1990s to offer rabies postexposure prophylaxis (RPEP) for occult bat encounters, including recommendations to offer RPEP to persons with bedroom exposure to a bat while sleeping without evidence of direct physical contact.
METHODS: The number needed to treat after bedroom exposure to a bat was calculated as the percentage of population exposed multiplied by the inverse of crude rabies incidence. Bedroom exposure was estimated in a population survey of 14,453 households. Incidence was

On September 27, 2005, a previously healthy boy aged 10 years in Mississippi died from encephalitis later attributed to rabies. This report summarizes the patient's clinical course and the subsequent epidemiologic investigation, which implicated exposure to bats at the boy's home as the likely source of rabies. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing the risk for rabies from direct contact with bats and seeking prompt medical attention when exposure occurs.

Rabies is a viral infection of the central nervous system, usually contracted from the bite of an infected animal, and is nearly always fatal without proper postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). In October 2004, a previously healthy female aged 15 years in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, received a diagnosis of rabies after being bitten by a bat approximately 1 month before symptom onset. This report summarizes the investigation conducted by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH), the public health response in Fond du Lac County, and the patient's clinical course through December 17. This is

On September 22, 2000, a 9-year-old boy awoke with a fever and complained of pain in his upper left arm. The pain persisted, and he developed insomnia and tremors in his arm and hand. He was admitted to a local hospital on September 27. That evening, he had mild dysphagia, pruritus of his upper chest and back, and a transient macular rash. On September 28, he developed tremors and myoclonic jerks in both arms, had become agitated, and had hydrophobia, aerophobia, dysarthria, and visual hallucinations. The next day hypersalivation was observed and the tremors and myoclonus had spread to his low

BACKGROUND: As part of a continuing investigation of the comparative ultrastructure of chiropteran salivary glands, we examined the submandibular glands of eight species of neotropical fruit bats in the genus Artibeus. We previously described secretory granules of unusual substructure in the seromucous demilunar cells of this organ in some species in this genus. In the present study, we turned our attention to the serous acinar cells in the same glands.
METHODS: Specimens of eight species of Artibeus were collected in neotropical localities. Salivary glands were extirpated in the field and th…

In the course of a large scale study of salivary gland ultrastructure in chiropterans, enlarged cells infected with numerous virus particles were encountered in some acinar cells in the principal submandibular glands of two of 34 little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus). The characteristic morphology of the viruses, together with the cytomegaly that they induced, led to their identification as cytomegalovirus (CMV). In a reversal of the situation in other animal species, bat virus particles within cytoplasmic vacuoles lacked capsomeres, whereas the latter were prominent in particles free in the cy…

The unusual occurrence of skeletal muscle in the pineal gland of the bat Rhinopoma microphyllum is described. Individual muscle fibres were centrally placed and were incompletely encapsulated by a labyrinthine network of widened spaces filled with electron-dense material. The 2.4 micron long sarcomeres consisted of well developed A, I, H, M, and Z bands. A few myofibrils were oriented transversely within the same fibre. T system components, mitochondria and glycogen appeared normally distributed. Unmyelinated nerve bundles impinged upon the fibre but neuromuscular junctions were not observed.

The pathogenesis of histoplasmosis was studied following intraperitoneal or intranasal infection of the neotropical bat, Artibeus lituratus. Groups of bats received either 10(4) or 10 viable mycelial fragments of Histoplasma capsulatum by intraperitoneal injection, or 10(6) or 10(4) viable mycelial particles by intranasal instillation. Intraperitoneal infection with the high dose resulted in rapid dissemination of the fungus to spleen, liver, lung and intestine, culminating in the death of some bats within 2-3 weeks. As few as 10 viable units of H. capsulatum produced systemic disease in about

Macronyssid mites (Radfordiella) have been found in the oral mucosa of the long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris nivalis), which occurs from Texas southward throughout much of Mexico. This is the first report of mites of the suborder Mesostigmata attached in the oral cavity of a mammal. Osteolysis of hard palate and odontolysis of teeth result from infestations of mites adjacent to the upper premolars and molars; destruction of bone, teeth, and Connective tissue often leads to exfoliation of teeth in life. Oral mites have not been found in Leptonycteris sanborni, a species in part sympatric with Lepto

Rabies is an acute, progressive, viral encephalitis. Warm-blooded vertebrates are susceptible. Major reservoirs reside in the Chiroptera and Carnivora. Among the latter, representatives include dogs, ferret badgers, foxes, jackals, mongooses, raccoons, and skunks. Within the Carnivora, pinnipeds represent a diverse group of >30 extant species. These marine mammals range from the Arctic to Antarctica, but there is no review about rabies in this group. Apparently, only a single 1980 case of rabies occurred from Svalbard in a ringed seal (Phoca hispida). However, in 2024, incidental cases appeare…

Self-organized behaviour has been extensively studied in group dynamics in animals, with a strong focus on movement coordination in species like fish and birds. By contrast, far less attention has been paid to vocal interactions within animal groups. Here, we unveil a self-organized vocal behaviour in echolocating bats (Miniopterus fuliginosus), characterized by their adaptive responses to jamming stimuli. Using controlled playback experiments, we identified a mathematical model that describes how bats autonomously adjust their vocal frequencies to avoid signal interference mimicking group ech

We provide evidence for natural Hendra virus infections and associated serology in a cohort of Australian black flying foxes (Pteropus alecto) transferred from Queensland to the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Victoria, Australia. This study supports the likelihood that flying foxes undergo cycles of infection and reinfection and possibly recrudescence.

Bats are increasingly studied for their ability to coexist with diverse viruses of human health importance. While this focus has yielded insights into host–pathogen dynamics, baseline physiological data from healthy bats remain limited, constraining comparative and mechanistic understanding. Serum proteomics offers a direct window into circulating proteins that underpin immune regulation, cellular maintenance, and metabolism. Here, we characterize the serum proteome of clinically healthy, captive Egyptian rousette bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus), the only known natural reservoir host species of M

Bat populations are facing numerous challenges due to human activities, and the development of solar energy in agricultural landscapes may add to these issues. Effects of solar fields on bat populations are still poorly understood. In this study, we compared bat activity in six solar fields that each had two grassland controls (agricultural grassland and natural meadows). Using passive bat detectors, bat calls were recorded along the edges of these plots, where the highest bat species diversity and activity were expected. The effects of landscape composition and configuration on the diversity,

Bats provide key ecosystem services, yet their dual role in subterranean habitats remains understudied. Frugivorous species such as Artibeus planirostris can act both as seed dispersers in surface environments and as sources of organic matter in caves through guano deposition. We investigated these functions in Toca do Morrinho Cave (Bahia, Brazil), combining captive experiments and field monitoring to assess guano production, diet, deposition patterns, and seed fate. Bats consumed fruits from 11 plant species and produced an average of 3.24 g of dry guano per day. Most feces (91.1%) were depo
