[Lavage of the birth canal with chlorhexidine: a new valid method for the prevention of perinatal infections].

Perinatal morbidity and mortality are due to various infective agents, mainly represented by beta-hemolytic group B Streptococcus. The perin … the reduction of perinatal infections following the cleansing of the birth canal with a solution of Chlorhexidine 0.25% during labour (1996-1997). It seemed interesting for us to assess the applicability and efficacy of a new strategy of prophylaxis of perinatal infections in a Developing Country based on the association of two of the simple strategies proposed …

Clinical and microbiological effects of chlorhexidine and arginine sustained-release varnishes in the mentally retarded.

Local applications of sustained-released varnishes of chlorhexidine and arginine were used in a controlled pilot study of 34 mentally retarded patients, ages 18-45, assigned to one of these groups: chlorhexidine (C), arginine (A), or placebo (P). A professional scaling followed by four weeks of professional brushing to reach a Plaque Index (PII) and Gingival Index (GI) of 1.0 at baseline preceded eight weeks of daily varnish application to the buccal and labial surfaces of all teeth. Clinical parameters (PII and GI) and bacterial samples from selected teeth were collected at predetermined inte…

Evaluation of the substantivity of a chlorhexidine oral rinse in irradiated head and neck cancer patients.

A trial was conducted to evaluate the substantivity of chlorhexidine in a population of patients who had undergone primary or adjunctive radiation therapy for tumors of the head and neck. Subjects were instructed to first rinse with 0.12% chlorhexidine as per manufacturer instructions, followed by a releasing rinse provided 1 minute, 1 hour, and 4 hours later. All expectorants were collected, pH adjusted, and introduced to the test microorganism. Zones of bacterial inhibition were then measured and recorded. The results suggest that 0.12% chlorhexidine is retained in the oral cavity for at lea…

Efficacy of chlorhexidine gluconate use in the prevention of perirectal infections in patients with acute leukemia.

The frequency of rectal infections is increased in patients with acute leukemia. Complications associated with rectal lesions may be severe enough to cause life-threatening septicemia. Clinical research evaluating the effects of preventive perirectal skin care is scarce. This study's purpose was to determine whether using chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) in a prophylactic perirectal skin-care regimen decreases perirectal infections and whether it produces more skin irritation than a nonmedicated skin cleanser. The sample consisted of 40 patients, 16 of whom were randomized to use chlorhexidine an…

The effect of chlorhexidine treatment of root surfaces on the attachment of human gingival fibroblasts in vitro.

Chlorhexidine mouthrinse is a widely used adjunct in periodontal therapy due to its bactericidal effects. The effect of this agent on chronic gingivitis and wound healing following surgical therapy in animals and humans has been favorable. The re-establishment of lost connective tissue attachment to the root surface following periodontal therapy is a desirable goal in which the ability of periodontal ligament fibroblasts to reattach to root surfaces of periodontally involved teeth is a critical event. Understanding the effect of chlorhexidine on fibroblast attachment will provide the rationale…

An in vivo study of neutrophil locomotion in relation to periodontal disease status and local chlorhexidine.

Neutrophil migration from skin window abrasions was studied in 10 patients with no history of periodontitis, 10 with localised juvenile or post-juvenile periodontitis, and 10 with chronic adult periodontitis. Filters contained either saline or chlorhexidine (0.002% or 0.02%). The leading front was measured in filters placed for 30 min after cell migration had been established for 2 h. Subjects in the juvenile/post juvenile group showed a reduced range of migration distances, but were still within the normal range when compared with the other 2 groups. Chlorhexidine at 0.002% tended to increase…

Sclerosing peritonitis complicating continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis with the use of chlorhexidine in alcohol.

Sclerosing peritonitis (SP) is an uncommon but serious complication of CAPD with various suggested etiology. We have documented 14 cases of SP in 18 CAPD patients using chlorhexidine in alcohol (ChA) in the connection procedure; 13 died. Nine of the 14 patients had been transferred to haemodialysis or renal transplantation, yet all still developed symptoms of SP within a few months after transfer even though 5 of them were originally asymptomatic. The main symptoms of SP were peritoneal ultrafiltration failure, exudative bloody ascites and intestinal obstruction. They present at around 5 years…

Effectiveness of oral chlorhexidine for reducing stomatitis in a pediatric bone marrow transplant population.

Disruption of the oral mucosal lining and the lack of normal defense mechanisms predispose bone marrow transplant (BMT) patients to life-threatening infections, often caused by oral flora. Chlorhexidine, used as an oral antiseptic, appears promising in limiting oral bacteria and fungi, and therefore, may decrease oral complications associated with BMT. The purpose of this study was to determine in pediatric BMT recipients if a 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthrinse, used as an adjunct to normal in-hospital oral care regimens, would decrease the severity of oral mucositis as measured by oral ulceration…

Clinical evaluation of benzydamine, chlorhexidine, and placebo mouthwashes in the management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Eighteen patients with minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis were given alcoholic benzydamine hydrochloride, aqueous chlorhexidine, or a benzydamine-free placebo mouthwash in random order. Each patient used each preparation for a 3-month period. Ulcer diaries were marked at the same time each week during the 9-month test period. Records were made of the number, size, sites, and pain severity of any ulcers present. Statistical analysis of the results showed no significant differences between any of the treatments tested. Stinging of the oral mucosa was the only consistent side effects noted by ni…

Effects of chlorhexidine gel in a group of maintenance-care patients with poor oral hygiene.

An intraindividual double-blind crossover study was designed in order to see if a 1% chlorhexidine gel used twice a day could substitute for ordinary toothpaste in group of maintenance-care patients with poor oral hygiene. Twenty patients from a student clinic participated, each with a long history of maintenance-care problems. A 4-week test period with chlorhexidine gel or placebo gel was followed by an intermediate period with ordinary toothpaste, and then by another 4-week test period. Plaque-covered surfaces (%), bleeding sites (%) and extraneous staining (color slides) were recorded at ea…

Localized Cutaneous Reaction to Chlorhexidine After Lumbar Trigger Point Injections: A Case Report.

We describe the case of a 38-year-old patient who developed a delayed localized cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction after she underwent lumbar trigger point injections (TPIs). This patient had undergone numerous TPIs in the past without adverse reactions. Notably, she had one prior similar episode; in both episodes, a larger volume of chlorhexidine was used during skin preparation. These findings suggest that the combined effects of a longer dry time and inadvertent subcutaneous chlorhexidine exposure were the likely drivers of these reactions. This case presents a unique manifestation of chlo…

Enhanced antimicrobial properties of POSS-modified composite resin with chlorhexidine-loaded bioactive glass.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to develop a novel antibacterial dental composite resin by loading chlorhexidine (CHX) onto bioactive glass (BG 45S5) and incorporating it into a resin matrix containing cage-type polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanomonomers. METHODS: CHX was loaded onto the surface of BG 45S5 using a blending method to obtain experimental groups with different CHX concentrations. Experimental composite resins were prepared by incorporating 20 wt% CHX-loaded BG 45S5 and 40 wt% SiO₂ as inorganic fillers into a matrix containing 4 wt% POSS nanomonomer. Materia…

Antimicrobial efficacy of chlorhexidine-treated surfaces against clinical isolates implicated in nosocomial infections.

Introduction. Bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance are significant threats to global public health, both of which spread through contamination of solid surfaces. We have previously developed an antimicrobial surface technology that directly bonds the broad-spectrum biocide chlorhexidine to steel surfaces. These surfaces were shown to kill bacteria within minutes of contact and to be effective against bacteria evolved in the laboratory for resistance to chlorhexidine in solution.Hypothesis/Gap Statement. We hypothesized that resistance to these surfaces could exist outside of the n…

Layer by layer nanocoating of chlorhexidine-loaded micelles on polymethyl methacrylate denture base.

BACKGROUND: Denture stomatitis is a prevalent oral infection commonly affecting denture wearers with inadequate oral hygiene cares. This susceptibility stems from the porous and rough nature of denture bases, which readily harbor bacteria and promote plaque accumulation. This study aimed to modify the surface of denture bases with a chlorhexidine (CHX) coating to promote antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans. METHODS: Denture bases were coated with chlorhexidine-loaded poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) micelles (CHX-micelles) using the solvent evaporation method. The …

Comparative Study of Chlorhexidine-Loaded Microneedle Patches vs Gels in Local Periodontal Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease, requires effective local antimicrobial therapy. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a gold-standard antimicrobial, but conventional gel delivery faces limitations in sustained release and pocket penetration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical trial was conducted with 60 periodontitis patients (30 per group). Clinical parameters (probing depth - PD, clinical attachment level - CAL, bleeding on probing - BOP) and microbial counts (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans) were assessed at ba…

Effect of ozonated oil versus chlorhexidine gel among Indian patients with chronic periodontitis.

The efficacy of Ozonated oil in treating chronic periodontitis compared to Chlorhexidine gel following Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) is of interest. Fifty-six patients were randomly assigned to two groups: one receiving Ozonated oil post-SRP and the other receiving Chlorhexidine gel. Periodontal indices (Plaque Index, Gingival Index), Periodontal Probing Depth (PPD), and Clinical Attachment Level (CAL) were measured at baseline, one month, and three months. Intragroup comparisons for Plaque and Gingival indices showed statistically significant improvements over time (p < 0.05), but intergroup…
