22 patients suffering from different orthopaedic disease patterns were x-rayed with direct x-ray magnification with focus diameters between 0.012 and 0.100 mm. This yielded improved resolution of detail structures, especially in tumours and aseptic bone necroses. Due to the relatively low efficiency of the x-ray tube (conditioned by the physics of the x-ray equipment), however, exposure times of several seconds were required, and the voltage had to be higher than in conventional x-ray procedure. This resulted in lack of sharpness due to movement and to a loss in contrast. Hence, the clinical u

An illustrative case of synovial chondromatosis in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region is presented, and 36 cases reported earlier are reviewed. The present patient, a 35-year-old woman, had been suffering from swelling and pain in the TMJ area as well as limited mandibular movements for 7 years. The condition had been treated with various conservative methods without any relief of the symptoms. Finally, radiological examination revealed calcified nodules within the joint space and a surgical exploration was performed. In all, 27 loose particles were removed from the joint in connection w…

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare disorder presenting a typical radiological appearance. We reviewed three patients with this disease in the ankle. Two of these patients were reexamined after 7 and 27 years, respectively. Although both had several calcified juxta-articular bodies in the ankle none of them had any clinical symptoms. This indicates that surgical intervention should be performed only if mechanical signs and symptoms are present.

A rare case of carpal tunnel syndrome due to an extra-articular synovial osteochondroma arising from the synovial sheath of the flexor pollicis longus tendon, is described. This has not been described in the literature previously. The cyst with the contained osteochondroma was excised with good relief of symptoms. The histological examination of the osteochondroma revealed another interesting and unusual feature. We would like to document a case of tenosynovial chondrometaplasia of the synovial lining of a tendon sheath. Only a few such cases have been reported in the literature.

A case of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle causing severe facial asymmetry and malocclusion (occlusal deviation) is presented. A 63-year-old woman was successfully treated by removal of the tumor and condylectomy. In addition, 4 cases of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle reported in the Japanese literature are reviewed with respect to several clinical items.

A case of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle has been presented. The facial and occlusal deformities produced by the tumor are described. After the surgical treatment and concomitant orthodontic treatment, satisfactory occlusion and facial contour were established.

Two cases of solitary osteochondromas interfering with mandibular motion are presented along with a brief review of the literature. A single incidence of an osteochondroma developing from the mandibular condyle is added to the growing number of case reports. In addition, an osteochondroma developing from the zygomatic arch is reported. Our review of the literature has shown no previous report of occurrence at this site.

We reviewed the clinical and pathologic features of 47 laryngeal cartilaginous tumors treated at the Mayo Clinic. This represents the largest reported series of these tumors. The patient group consisted of 36 men (77%) and 11 women (mean age, 63 years; range, 44 to 91 years). The tumors included 44 chondrosarcomas, all low-grade, and 3 chondromas. The overall 5-year survival was 90.1%, which did not differ significantly from the expected survival. Laryngectomy was performed as primary treatment for chondrosarcoma in 6 patients. Of the patients with chondrosarcoma, 40% had tumor recurrence or s…

We present a 24-year-old patient with multiple chondromas of both hands, the pelvis, the left leg, and an associated brain stem glioma. There was no evidence of hemangioma or dyschromia, and the condition was diagnosed as Ollier's disease, a special type of dyschondroplasia like Maffucci's syndrome and Kast's disease. An increased overall risk for development of malignant skeletal and nonskeletal tumors is associated with Maffucci's syndrome. The risk of malignant degeneration is lower in Ollier's disease. A glioma in the pons and the right lobe of the cerebellum was found in this patient. The…

BACKGROUND: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare cartilaginous tumor, accounting for < 1% of benign bone tumors. We report a case of temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-CMF, involving the pterygopalatine space and skull base and discuss its epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman presented with facial asymmetry and progressive mouth opening restriction due to a mass expanding upwardly to the auriculotemporal region. Using digital techniques to determine the lesion's boundary and reconstruct the normal glenoid fossa, the temporalis myofascial f

Follicular adenomas are the most common benign thyroid neoplasm but are unusual in children. However, other rare degenerative lesions and those of developmental origin can also present as thyroid masses. This article reports the first described pediatric thyroid adenochondroma. A 3-year-old female presented with a hard mass in the right lobe of her thyroid with nondiagnostic imaging and cytology findings. She underwent a right thyroid lobectomy uneventfully. Final histopathology examination confirmed an adenochondroma. To the best of our knowledge, an adenochondroma of the thyroid gland in a c…

Tracheal bronchus is a congenital abnormality rarely described in the literature. It is mostly completely asymptomatic. This condition may rarely be associated with inflammatory diseases. Exceptional are those cases in which the condition is associated with malignancy. We describe a case of a 45-year-old man in whom a 3-month history of non-productive cough and chest pain led to a diagnosis of a solitary pulmonary nodule associated with a tracheal bronchus. The histopathological examination after VATS enucleation showed the presence of a hamartochondroma. To the best of our knowledge this is t…

Twenty-one patients (17 women and four men) who underwent operative treatment for a solitary enchondroma of the hand were examined at a follow-up of between 2 and 18 years (mean, 9 years). Radiographs showed normal cancellous bone at the site of surgery in 11 cases, three had recurrent enchondroma and seven had bone defects so that recurrence could not be excluded. Two of the three recurrences underwent reoperation. Previous studies have regarded persistent bony defects as evidence of complete excision without recurrence. However, in view of the slow asymptomatic growth of this tumour this opi…

Enchondromas are rarely found in carpal bones. This paper reports a case with scaphoid enchondroma and reviews three cases from previous literature. Three of the patients with scaphoid enchondromas presented with pathologic fractures after traumatic events. Each enchondroma had characteristic histopathologic findings. It is important to realize that although enchondroma is usually a painless lesion, it weakens the cortex of the involved bone, facilitating fracture. Thus, when cystic scaphoid fractures are encountered, enchondroma must be part of the differential diagnosis.
