OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of oral mifepristone (RU486; Roussel-Uclaf, Paris, France) associated with IM injection of sulprostone (Schering, Lys-Lez-Lannoy, France) for the induction of legal abortion (7 weeks of amenorrhea in France).
DESIGN: An uncontrolled observational study.
SETTING: A public family planning center in Paris.
PATIENTS: Three hundred sixty-nine (369) pregnant women with up to 7 weeks amenorrhea undergoing legal abortion.
INTERVENTIONS: Six hundred milligrams (600 mg) of oral mifepristone followed 48 hours later by an IM injection of 250 micrograms of sulprostone.

33 patients with tubal pregnancy and beta-HCG level less than 2500 mIU/ml were treated with local, laparoscopic Prostaglandin-injection. Re-operation was not necessary and beta-HCG fell to undetectable levels in 73% (p = 0.05). Serial beta-HCG correlated poorly with outcome. In patients with an increasing beta-HCG success was limited to 55% (p = 0.59). Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta HCG) was measured in 127 urine and 85 serum samples from 175 untreated patients with urothelial cancer. Serum levels of beta HCG were substantially elevated in 16 of 21 patients (76%) with widespread metastases but in only 2 of 64 patients (3%) with disease confined to the pelvis. Endodermal sinus tumor is the most common testicular neoplasm in childhood. The management of children with this neoplasm remains controversial. We have treated prospectively 5 children with stage I endodermal sinus tumor with limited surgery and no adjuvant therapy. The median patient age at diagnosis was 21 months (range 5 to 24 months). To assess the value of inhibin A as an additional second-trimester maternal serum marker of Down's syndrome we studied 56 affected and 280 unaffected pregnancies matched for gestational age. In an attempt to explain hyperthyroidism in hydatidiform mole, concentrations of immunoreactive thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) together with human-chorionic gonadotrophin (beta-hCG) were measured in the serous fluid obtained from 43 patients aged 15-45 years and with amenorrhea 11-31 weeks. Elevated concentrations of these two hormones were found in all samples. It is probable that hyperthyroidism could stem from TSH immunologically similar to pituitary TSH and distinct from hCG and luteinizing hormone (LH) that we have identified in hydatid vesicles.

Extratubal secondary trophoblastic implants (ESTI) are a rare complication of conservative laparoscopic procedures for tubal ectopic pregnancies. Endometrial biopsy specimens were obtained from 107 normally menstruating infertile women 2 to 3 days before the anticipated onset of menses and were day-dated according to histologic criteria. A simultaneous blood sample was obtained for measurement of progesterone (P) and beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin.
