BACKGROUND: Proton beam therapy (PBT) has been gradually introduced for treating choroidal melanoma. This study systematically reviewed clinical reports to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PBT in choroidal melanoma patients.
METHODS: This systematic review included all the primary studies involving PBT for choroidal melanoma patients through April 2024. Four publicly accessible databases were searched, and the statistical data were analyzed using STATA 15.0. The outcomes of interest included overall survival (OS), metastasis-free survival, local control rate, and adverse reactions.

A 44-year-old asymptomatic American Indian woman presented with bilateral choroidal hyperpigmentation in an annular pattern for 12 clock hours around the peripheral retina. Uveal melanomas are almost always unilateral. Bilateral presentation is extremely rare, about 1 in 80 million/year. This report presents the case of a 40-year-old man who developed bilateral choroidal melanoma sequentially. The right eye with a de novo juxtapapillary choroidal melanoma was managed with 18-mm notched I125 plaque with full distribution. Metastasis is the most common ocular malignancy. An atypical clinical presentation whoever, can delay the diagnosis, particularly when there is no history of malignant disease. Our patient initially presented with a painful red eye and a subretinal mass, but without signs of intraocular inflammation or glaucoma. The results of the diagnostic work-up were inconclusive. Postmortem histopathologic examination revealed a metastasis to the posterior choroid.

Twenty-seven eyes harboring a choroidal melanoma which could not be treated by other methods were treated with external beam radiation using a linear accelerator. After a mean follow-up period of 15.6 months 3 eyes had to be enucleated. In two eyes fresh tumors developed, which were successfully treated with local beta-radiation. BACKGROUND: Metastases of thyroid carcinomas to the choroid and/or orbit are infrequent. PubMed was searched for English-language articles and case reports published from 1977 to 2012. In our survey, we looked for reports of orbital and/or ocular metastases from the thyroid and found 31 reported cases from 1979 to 2012.
