Equal in death: Ancient genomic analysis of children's early Christian burials.

Sexing the skeletal remains of young individuals is crucial yet notoriously difficult in archaeology. Children, who cannot be reliably sexed morphologically, are often excluded from gender-related research, limiting our understanding of past childhood. This issue is compounded in contexts lacking grave goods, such as early Christian burials. We conducted genomic screening of 142 individuals from Sweden dating from the late Viking Age to the Medieval period, including 68 subadults and 74 adults from 27 single and 50 multiple burials. To investigate the treatment of children in death and the rol

Sequential Knee and Hip Arthroplasty in a Patient With Pfeifer-Weber-Christian Disease.

Pfeifer-Weber-Christian Disease (PWCD) is a rare chronic inflammatory condition characterized by recurrent painful subcutaneous nodules and systemic manifestations. Long-term corticosteroid therapy, essential for managing PWCD, predisposes patients to complications such as osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis, often necessitating joint replacement surgeries. This report discusses a 38-year-old woman with a 15-year history of PWCD who underwent sequential knee and hip arthroplasty due to severe joint degeneration. The patient presented with debilitating pain, significant functional impairment,

Pattern, Management, and Outcomes of Chest Injury At Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre.

BACKGROUND: Chest trauma is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the region. Lacking data in our environment has been a challenging part of knowing the burden of the problem. Long hospital stays and associated injuries are an essential measure of morbidity. The study results will provide a basis for planning prevention strategies and establishment of treatment protocols. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence, pattern, and management outcomes of chest injury patients at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC), a Tertiary Hospital in Northern zone Tanzania from October 2021 to Apri

Intimate Compromise: Reproduction, Piety, and Medicine Among American Orthodox Christians.

Drawing on ethnographic findings from an American Orthodox Christian community, I examine how forms of intimate reproductive compromise facilitate the assertive refusal to negotiate on abortion. The American Orthodox harness the values and practices of biomedicine to validate their refusal of abortion, but their inflexible views emerge from prior compromises. By not giving up modern contraception, women self-fashion forms of piety that allow them to navigate composite identities while remaining dedicated to a pro-life stance. That steadfast refusal of abortion may be the consequence of previou

Multidisciplinary approach in a case of Hand-Schüller-Christian disease with maxillary involvement.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a childhood pathology with a peak of incidence ranging from 1 to 4 years of age, though diagnosis is often made in adult age. LCH is clinically classified into three types: eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Schuller-Christian disease and Abt-Letterer-Siwe disease. We report a case of Hand-Schüller-Christian disease with diabetes insipidus, skull and maxillary involvement in a 16-year-old boy referred to our observation for gradual increase in mobility of the teeth and subsequent gradual loss of the second premolars and the first molars of the upper jaw. Due to

Differences in Perception of Breast Cancer Among Muslim and Christian Women in Ghana.

PURPOSE: The burden of breast cancer continues to increase in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where women present with more advanced disease and have worse outcomes compared with women from high-income countries. In the absence of breast cancer screening in LMICs, patients must rely on self-detection for early breast cancer detection, followed by a prompt clinical diagnostic work-up. Little is known about the influence of religious beliefs on women's perceptions and practices of breast health. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to female members of Islamic and Christ

Weber-Christian disease developing into mediastinitis and pleuritis with massive pleural effusion.

A 53-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of high fever. Chest computed tomography showed left pleural effusion and mediastinitis. He developed painful red subcutaneous nodules in his bilateral lower extremities. Thoracoscopy-assisted exploratory excision showed visceral pleura thickening; panniculitis in the periaortic area was histologically proven. The patient was treated with corticosteroid therapy which immediately reduced the fever. Subsequent imaging examinations after corticosteroid therapy showed improvement of mediastinitis and pleural effusion. This case reminds us that Web

[Julius Ludwig August Koch (1841-1908). Psychiatrist, philosopher, and Christian].

Julius Ludwig August Koch was born 1841 in the small town of Laichingen (Württemberg) in the Southwest of Germany. After working as a chemist for about seven years, he studied medicine in Tübingen from 1863 to 1867. First he worked as a physican and later in a private mental hospital in Göppingen. From 1874 to 1898, he was director of a state mental hospital in Zwiefalten (Württemberg). Koch died in 1908 after a long period of suffering in Zwiefalten. Being deeply routed in a Christian faith and having much interest in moral and ethical issues, Koch published some philosophical works 'Epistomo

Staphylococcus cohnii as a cause of multiple brain abscesses in Weber-Christian disease.

We report a patient with multiple brain abscesses due to Staphylococcus cohnii. While these brain abscesses markedly responded to the antibiotics, this patient was subsequently suffered from subcutaneous inflammatory nodules in the adipose tissue, which diagnosed him as having Weber-Christian disease (WCD). This is the first report that subcutaneous inflammatory nodules in the adipose tissue, which lead the diagnosis of WCD, followed multiple brain abscesses. To our knowledge, S. cohnii has not yet been reported to cause multiple brain abscesses in humans. Although the etiology of WCD is unkno

[Chronic viral hepatitis C in patient with Hand-Schüller-Christian disease].

Chronic hepatitis C often occurs among patients with different diseases and may influence their natural history. From the other hand coexisting diseases may modify the hepatitis C infection. We present a case of a male patient with the histiocytosis X, earlier called Hand-Schüller-Christian disease with hepatitis C virus infection. The mild course of the chronic hepatitis C, not requiring anti-viral therapy, may be the result of immunomodulation relevant to Hand-Schüller-Christian disease.

Ulcerative colitis associated with Weber-Christian panniculitis and musculitis: a case report.

A case of 22-year-old man suffering from ulcerative colitis, in whom Weber-Christian panniculitis and musculitis occurred simultaneously, is reported. He had suffered from ulcerative colitis for 7 years and he again had bloody stools 1 month before being admitted. Two weeks before admission, large (2-4 cm) subcutaneous tumors appeared. Weber-Christian panniculitis, musculitis, and active stage ulcerative colitis were diagnosed. All the symptoms went into remission after steroid therapy. The possibility of the existence of a common antigen in enterobacterial wall, colonic epithelium, and adipos

[Pfeifer-Weber-Christian panniculitis (PWCP). Description of a case and review of the literature].

We report on a case of Pfeifer-Weber-Christian panniculitis (PWCP) in a 40 year old woman. PWCP is a rare inflammatory disorder of the subcutaneous fatty tissue. It is characterized by painful relapsing, subcutaneous nodules occurring preferentially at the upper arm, thigh and trunk regions. The disease is often accompanied by recurrent temperatures and constitutional symptoms. The clinical course of our patient had already lasted for four years when we saw her for the first time. Besides local panniculitis of the arms and the trunk she suffered from recurrent temperatures. Antibiotics and/or
