Coordination and relationships between organisations during the civil-military international response against Ebola in Sierra Leone: an observational discussion.

The Ebola virus disease (EVD) crisis in West Africa began in March 2014. At the beginning of the outbreak, no one could have predicted just how far-reaching its effects would be. The EVD epidemic proved to be a unique and unusual humanitarian and public health crisis. It caused worldwide fear that impeded the rapid response required to contain it early. The situation in Sierra Leone (SL) forced the formation of a unique series of civil-military interagency relationships to be formed in order to halt the epidemic. Civil-military cooperation in humanitarian situations is not unique to this crisi

Did African Americans experience the 'Antebellum Puzzle'? Evidence from the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War.

The "Antebellum Puzzle" has been the subject of comment since the 1980s. It involves the paradox that, although the American economy was experiencing rapid economic growth in the several decades prior to the Civil War (1861-1865), the stature of native-born white males had been declining for the birth cohorts from the late 1820s. This was also true for free blacks (Komlos, 1992), but was apparently not true for slaves. This paper uses a sample of 8592 adult back males who were recruits to the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. They were recruited significantly among ex-slaves.

[Democratic Republic of the Congo: between civil war and the Marburg virus. International Committee of Technical and Scientific Coordination of the Durba Epidemic].

Because the epidemiology of viral hemorrhagic fever is unclear, each outbreak is a spectacular event that focuses the attention of the international scientific community. When an epidemic of Marburg virus disease occurred in the Durba region located in the northeastern part of the People's Republic of the Congo, 23 scientists were sent from 12 different countries. Sixty of the 73 people infected died. The first case was observed in December 1998 and the last in May 1999. Because of political unrest in the country, the outbreak was not reported immediately and most data was collected by observe

Lessons in professionalism: Ending the action gap. The Black doctors research committee and a White female martyr for civil rights - Part 2.

The US continues to lag in health outcomes and equity. In Part 1 of this review, we identified a persistent "Action Gap" as a failure of physician professionalism as defined in the Physician Charter on Medical Professionalism. Competency-Based Medical Education identifies professionalism as an opportunity to reconnect ethical foundations to medical training. Role models like internist Jean Cowsert, MD (1925-1967) and a 7-member Black "Medical Intelligence Group", illustrate how professionalism can transcend rhetoric and become action. Cowsert helped lead hospital desegregation during the imple

Digital technology use for social cohesion among older adults in rural Myanmar during the civil war: barriers and coping strategies.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing in Myanmar is occurring amid prolonged political instability and civil war, exacerbating social isolation and vulnerabilities among older adults, particularly in rural areas. While digital technologies have the potential to support social cohesion, little is known about how older adults in conflict-affected rural Myanmar access and use these tools, the barriers they face, and the strategies they adopt to cope with digital exclusion. METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted in rural communities in Kayin State, southeastern Myanmar. Semi-structured in-depth in

Volunteer helpers' perspectives on establishing contact with drug‑related death bereaved: The role of civil society organisations in reaching marginalised groups.

This study examines how helpers in civil society organizations (CSOs) understand conditions shaping their efforts to establish contact with individuals bereaved after a drug‑related death. Drug‑related death bereavement is marked by stigma, social withdrawal, and limited access to early support, making initial contact challenging. Based on six focus groups analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, three themes emerged: Increased Visibility in Society, Guidance to Services, and Tailored Services for Diverse Needs. Findings show that societal stigma and limited recognition make bereaved indivi

Association of work-related stressors, support, and satisfaction with cardiovascular disease incidence among Japanese civil servants: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Work-related stress is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet the contributions of specific work-related stressors, support, and satisfaction to CVD incidence are not fully understood. Clarifying whether lifestyle behaviors and physiological factors mediate associations between stressors and CVD is essential for targeted prevention. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, a cohort of 4820 Japanese workers (3876 men and 944 women) aged 35-65 years was followed up for CVD incidence from 2007 to 2022. Work-related stressors (eg, quantitative job overload), support (eg,

Exploratory conversations with biodiversity-oriented civil society groups on the potential applications of gene drive-modified mosquitoes for malaria control in Tanzania.

Gene drive-modified mosquitoes (GDMMs) are gaining attention as sustainable tools to complement existing malaria control strategies. Their ability to self-propagate and spread through wild mosquito populations offers the promise of low-cost, long-lasting impact, but also raises ecological, ethical, and governance concerns. In this evolving debate, civil society organizations (CSOs) are pivotal actors in shaping dialogue, representing community concerns, and influencing policy decisions. This study examined the perspectives and recommendations of biodiversity-oriented CSOs on the governance, te

After the horse has bolted : A quantitative assessment of the count of civil protection officers in London local authorities between 2006 and 2024.

This paper examines trends in the employment of emergency planning officers (EPOs) within London's local governments over 18 years. The main aim is to assess how workforce levels in local authority resilience and civil protection roles have been influenced by policy and significant regional, national and international incidents and events. The paper analyses employment data, correlating EPO numbers with major legislative, economic and societal events to investigate perceived and actual workforce trends. Key findings reveal fluctuations in EPO employment, including a significant decline from 20

Rumination and psychological resilience in Chinese civil aviation flight students: the chain mediating role of proactive coping and generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: As the focus of aviation safety shifts from technology to human factors, the central role of psychological resilience in flight safety has become increasingly prominent. However, the internal mechanism of how rumination affects psychological resilience, particularly the chain mediating effect of proactive coping and generalized anxiety, has not been thoroughly explored in high-stress populations. METHODS: Employing a cross-sectional design, 1,235 flight students from the Civil Aviation Flight University of China were surveyed using the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), Connor-David

The association between chronotype and metabolic syndrome in middle-aged Japanese civil servants: A longitudinal study from Aichi Workers' Cohort.

Chronotype, which reflects an individual's preference for activity and sleep timing, has been associated with various chronic conditions, particularly the evening chronotype. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of metabolic abnormalities that collectively increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies on chronotype and MetS have been inconsistent, and none has explored the longitudinal association between MetS and its components. Therefore, this study investigated these associations in middle-aged Japanese civil servants. We analyzed 2

Predictors of perinatal mortality in Liberia's post-civil unrest: A comparative analysis of the 2013 and 2019-2020 Liberia Demographic and Health Surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal mortality remains a pressing concern, especially in lower and middle-income nations. Globally, 1 in 72 babies are stillborn. Despite advancements, the 2030 targets are challenging, notably in sub-Saharan Africa. Post-war Liberia saw a 14% spike in perinatal mortality between 2013 and 2020, indicating the urgency for in-depth study. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate the predictors of perinatal mortality in Liberia using 2013 and 2019-2020 Liberia Demographic and Health Survey datasets. METHODS: In a two-stage cluster design from the Liberia Demographic and Healt

Enduring association between irritable bowel syndrome and war trauma during the Nicaragua civil war period: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial and physical trauma are known risk factors for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including in war veterans, whereas war exposure in civilians is unclear. Nicaragua experienced two wars, 1970-1990: The Sandinistas Revolution (1970s) and The Contra War (1980s). Our aim was to investigate the role of exposure to war trauma in the subsequent development of IBS in the context of an established health surveillance system (11000 households). AIM: To investigate in a civilian population the relationship between exposure to war trauma and events and the subsequent development of

Transfusion in the Spanish Civil War: Supply and demand, the role of the "blood transfusion officer" and British planning for the outbreak of the Second World War.

During the First World War blood transfusion progressed from being a rarely used treatment to a major component of the resuscitation of exsanguinated casualties, relying on local donation and availability of medical expertise. In the 1920s and early 1930s, clinical use of transfusion gradually increased supported by growing civilian, often volunteer, blood donor systems. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) introduced the first systematic use of aerial bombardment to intimidate the civilian population and to destroy infrastructure; it also saw more mobile battlefronts, replacing the relatively st
