Climate awareness, anxiety, and actions among youth: a qualitative study in a middle-income country.

OBJECTIVES: The impact of climate change on mental health is well established, but few studies have examined the perspectives of young people, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In this qualitative study, we explored how Brazilian children and adolescents experience climate change. This approach can help inform environmental education, communication, and self-care strategies for this age group. METHODS: We conducted focus groups with 50 children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years in three locations in Brazil. We analyzed the data using an interpretative phenomenological a

Expansion of Coccidioidomycosis Endemic Regions in the United States in Response to Climate Change.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is a fungal disease endemic to the southwestern United States. Across this region, temperature and precipitation influence the extent of the endemic region and number of Valley fever cases. Climate projections for the western United States indicate that temperatures will increase and precipitation patterns will shift, which may alter disease dynamics. We estimated the area potentially endemic to Valley fever using a climate niche model derived from contemporary climate and disease incidence data. We then used our model with projections of climate from Earth sy

Ecological niche modelling of Rift Valley fever virus vectors in Baringo, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that has an impact on human health and animal productivity. Here, we explore the use of vector presence modelling to predict the distribution of RVF vector species under climate change scenario to demonstrate the potential for geographic spread of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of climate change on RVF vector distribution in Baringo County, Kenya, with an aim of developing a risk map for spatial prediction of RVF outbreaks. METHODOLOGY: The study used data on vector presence and ecologi

Assessing the Influence of Climate on the Spatial Pattern of West Nile Virus Incidence in the United States.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in humans in the United States. Since the introduction of the disease in 1999, incidence levels have stabilized in many regions, allowing for analysis of climate conditions that shape the spatial structure of disease incidence. OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to identify the seasonal climate variables that influence the spatial extent and magnitude of WNV incidence in humans. METHODS: We developed a predictive model of contemporary mean annual WNV incidence using U.S. county-level case reports from 2005 to 2019 and sea

Cholera Risk: A Machine Learning Approach Applied to Essential Climate Variables.

Oceanic and coastal ecosystems have undergone complex environmental changes in recent years, amid a context of climate change. These changes are also reflected in the dynamics of water-borne diseases as some of the causative agents of these illnesses are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and their survival rates are impacted by changes in climatic conditions. Previous studies have established strong relationships between essential climate variables and the coastal distribution and seasonal dynamics of the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, pathogenic types of which are responsible for human cholera

The impact of climate change on airborne and droplet-borne diseases and hospital response measures.

OBJECTIVES: This review synthesizes quantitative evidence on how climate change modulates airborne and droplet-borne disease transmission and assesses hospital resilience strategies. METHODS: A narrative review of global data (2000-2025) was conducted, focusing on pathogen kinetics and post-disaster hospitalization burdens. RESULTS: Climate change alters disease dynamics by extending pathogen viability and creating prolonged transmission windows. Flood exposure increases respiratory hospitalization risk by 30% and infectious disease hospitalization risk by 26%, with burdens persisting for 60

"Climatic determinants" and simple thresholds for dengue early warning in Vietnam: a One Health perspective.

In recent years, dengue transmission in Vietnam has transitioned from predictable seasonality to climate-driven instability due to rising temperatures, urbanization, and hydrological extremes, among other factors. Traditional early warning systems based on case averages are becoming increasingly unreliable because of climate non-stationarity, resulting in both false alarms and missed warnings. This perspective summarizes available research on temperature, drought, rainfall extremes, diurnal temperature range, heatwaves, and El Niño anomalies, highlighting biologically-based thresholds that hav

Climate change and Aedes albopictus risks in China: current impact and future projection.

BACKGROUND: Future distribution of dengue risk is usually predicted based on predicted climate changes using general circulation models (GCMs). However, it is difficult to validate the GCM results and assess the uncertainty of the predictions. The observed changes in climate may be very different from the GCM results. We aim to utilize trends in observed climate dynamics to predict future risks of Aedes albopictus in China. METHODS: We collected Ae. albopictus surveillance data and observed climate records from 80 meteorological stations from 1970 to 2021. We analyzed the trends in climate ch

Restrictive sub-federal immigration policy climates and very preterm birth risk among US-born and foreign-born Hispanic mothers in the United States, 2005-2016.

Immigration policy climate may have pervasive effects on the health of immigrants and their families. We examine how living in a state at the time of delivery with a more restrictive immigration policy climate impacts risk of very preterm birth (VPTB) among Hispanic mothers in the United States. We used data from the United States live birth files, 2005-2016. We fit generalized linear mixed models predicting VPTB including information on individual (e.g., age, parity, specific Hispanic origin group) and geographic (e.g., county level poverty, ethnic density) risk determinants. [Epidemiology of emerging and resurging vector-borne diseases with special attention to climate change in Germany (review)].

Vector-borne diseases gained importance in Germany during the past years. Borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis are already well-known infectious diseases, transmitted by Ixodes ricinus. But reports on severe diseases, formerly only known as so-called "travel sickness" from tropical countries, markedly increased in the recent years. Several climate models predict a global warming of 1.4 degrees C up to 5.8 degrees C until the year 2100, and as climate-typical temperature barriers restrict the distribution of the vectors, especially arthropod-borne diseases are strongly influenced by the clim

Climatic suitability and future dynamics of test-weight-defined high-quality wheat in China under climate change.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is expected to affect crop production and grain quality by altering the environmental conditions that define crop climatic niches. However, the spatial distribution and future dynamics of climatic suitability for test-weight-defined high-quality wheat in China remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to characterize the climatic suitability of high-test-weight (High-TW) wheat and assess its potential changes under future climate scenarios. METHODS: High-TW wheat was defined as wheat with a test weight (TW) ≥ 750 g L-1. Long-term wheat quality monitoring

Integrating oral health into planetary health governance: a framework for resilient and equitable oral healthcare.

Oral health is largely absent from climate-adaptation and planetary-health governance, even though oral health and oral healthcare depend on supplies of clean water, stable electricity, secure supply chains, and a retained workforce, which climate change is destabilizing. In this Perspective, we argue that this omission is a strategic failure for health security, and draw on the contrasting experiences of seven climate-exposed settings (Australia, Fiji, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, South Africa, and the United Kingdom) to show how environmental stressors disrupt progress in pro

Centering Equity in the Nation's Weather, Water, and Climate Services.

Water, weather, and climate affect everyone. However, their impacts on various communities can be very different based on who has access to essential services and environmental knowledge. Structural discrimination, including racism and other forms of privileging and exclusion, affects people's lives and health, with ripples across all sectors of society. In the United States, the need to equitably provide weather, water, and climate services is uplifted by the Justice40 Initiative (Executive Order 14008), which mandates 40% of the benefits of certain federal climate and clean energy investment

Projections of future wildfires impacts on air pollutants and air toxics in a changing climate over the western United States.

Wildfires emit smoke particles and gaseous pollutants that greatly aggravate air quality and cause adverse health impacts in the western US (WUS). This study evaluates how wildfire impacts on air pollutants and air toxics evolve from the present climate to the future climate under a high anthropogenic emission scenario at regional and city scales. Through employing multiple climate and chemical transport models, small changes in domain-averaged air pollutant concentrations by wildfires are simulated over WUS. However, such changes significantly increase future city-scale pollutant concentratio

Exploring the relationship between climate-related exposures and oral health outcomes in Pakistan: A community-based cross-sectional study.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a contextual determinant of health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Climate-related stressors such as water scarcity and food insecurity may influence oral health indirectly by disrupting hygiene practices, dietary patterns, and access to care. However, epidemiological evidence examining these relationships remains limited, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study aimed to examine the association between selected climate-related exposures and oral health outcomes among adults residing in climate-vulnerable districts of Pakis

Prevalence, conceptual distinctiveness, and cross-sectional correlates of climate worry in Canadian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: As the impacts of the climate crisis escalate, adolescents face increasing threats to their health and well-being. However, little is known about the extent to which young adolescents experience climate worry (both in its general affective response and its specific cognitive concerns) and whether it is distinguishable from generalized anxiety. This study examined the prevalence of climate worry in young adolescents and tested its association with mental health and well-being while controlling for generalized anxiety. METHODS: Young adolescents (n = 1230; Mage = 12.85, 49% boys) fr

Effects of solar UV radiation and climate change on biogeochemical cycling: interactions and feedbacks.

Solar UV radiation, climate and other drivers of global change are undergoing significant changes and models forecast that these changes will continue for the remainder of this century. Here we assess the effects of solar UV radiation on biogeochemical cycles and the interactions of these effects with climate change, including feedbacks on climate. Such interactions occur in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. While there is significant uncertainty in the quantification of these effects, they could accelerate the rate of atmospheric CO(2) increase and subsequent climate change beyond curr

Physiological performance of native and invasive crayfish species in a changing environment: insights from Dynamic Energy Budget models.

Crayfish are keystone species important for maintaining healthy freshwater ecosystems. Crayfish species native to Europe, such as Astacus astacus and Austropotamobius torrentium, are facing decline and are increasingly endangered by changing climate and invasions of non-native crayfish, such as Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus virginalis. The success of these invasions largely depends on differences in ontogeny between the native species and the invaders and how changes in the environment will affect the ontogeny. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models can be used to investigate such diffe

Stakeholder collaboration in digital climate-health platforms: Mapping patterns across international case studies.

INTRODUCTION: Digital climate-health platforms are web, mobile or dashboard-based architectures that link climate, environmental, health and socio-economic data to make climate-related health risks visible and actionable. This study maps stakeholder collaboration patterns in international platforms, focusing on who contributes, how collaboration is organized, and how platform-specific features shape inclusion, decision-making and use across varied institutional contexts. METHODS: We employed a sequential mixed-method design combining internet-based scoping, survey responses and 22 semi-struct

Projections of dengue epidemics attributable to climate change in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to influence the risk of mosquito-borne diseases by altering mosquito and pathogen ecology. However, the potential impact of climate change on dengue epidemics has rarely been investigated in Peru. In this study, we projected future dengue epidemics in Peru under various climate change scenarios. METHODS: We analysed 526 033 reported dengue cases from 15 Peruvian states (2016-2023). Using quasi-Poisson time-series regression with distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs), we modelled weekly dengue case counts in each state as a function of weekly mean te
