[Impairment in visual cognition in patients with Parkinson disease].

Neural pathway for visual information processing involves retina, lateral geniculate body, primary visual cortex, and higher visual cortical areas, all of which have been reported to be disordered either functionally or pathologically in Parkinson disease (PD). As elementary visual disorders, there have been studies that reported reduced contrast sensitivity for middle to high spatial frequencies and impaired blue color perception. Most of those studies suggested retina as the damaged cite that is responsible for the impairments, whereas some studies pointed to the possible cortical involvemen

The role of cognition in age-related hearing loss.

The article presents a commentary on the accompanying six papers from the perspective of a cognitive psychologist. Treisman's (1964, 1969) levels of analysis model of selective attention is suggested as a framework within which the interactions between 'bottom-up' auditory factors and 'top-down' cognitive factors may be understood. The complementary roles of auditory and cognitive aspects of hearing are explored, and their mutually compensatory properties discussed. The findings and ideas reported in the six accompanying papers fit well into such a 'levels of processing' framework, which may t

Social/communication skills, cognition, and vocational functioning in schizophrenia.

Deficits in social/communications skills have been documented in schizophrenia, but it is unclear how these deficits relate to cognitive deficits and to everyday functioning. In the current study, social/communication skills performance was measured in 29 schizophrenia patients with a history of good vocational functioning (GVF) and 26 with a history of poor vocational functioning (PVF) using a role-play-based social skills assessment, the Maryland Assessment of Social Competence (MASC). A battery of standard cognitive tasks was also administered. MASC-indexed social skills were significantly

Vitamin B12 and folate depletion in cognition: a review.

In cross-sectional studies, low levels of folate and B12 have been shown to be associated with cognitive decline and dementia Evidence for the putative role of folate, vitamin B12 in neurocognitive and other neurological functions comes from reported cases of severe vitamin deficiencies, particularly pernicious anemia, and homozygous defects in genes that encode for enzymes of one-carbon metabolism. The neurological alterations seen in these cases allow for a biological role of vitamins in neurophysiology. Results are quite controversial and there is an open debate in literature, considering t

Spatial cognition in young children with spinal muscular atrophy.

Success in visuospatial tasks has often been demonstrated in teenagers with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). However, what has been tested in these studies, with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (Wechsler, 1974) performance scale, does not deal with the spatial capacities that co-occur with the advent of self-produced locomotion. Indeed, various studies have shown that occurrence of locomotion in infancy is correlated with the development of visuospatial cognitive competencies, suggesting that locomotor experience might play a central role in spatial development, especially i

Maternal predictors of children's social cognition: an attachment perspective.

BACKGROUND: This paper assumes that the capacities to (1) openly acknowledge, and (2) elaborate a resourceful plan for coping with distress in the self and others are central features of social cognition. METHOD: These capacities were assessed in a sample (N = 51) of 11-year-old children whose mothers and fathers had previously provided Adult Attachment Interviews (AAIs) before their children were born. The children were shown six line-drawn sequences of child(ren), with peer(s) and/or family in diverse situations involving some moderate distress. The experimenter described the adversity show…

Spatial cognition: where we were and where we are.

Some highlights of the ongoing study of visuospatial cognition from Descartes to the advent of functional neuroimaging are reviewed. We emphasize that parietal cortex contains multiple representations of space, appropriate to the demands of perception and action in near and far space. Converging evidence from the behavioral effects of relatively focal brain lesions on different aspects of spatial cognition and from the locus of maximal physiological activation when normal volunteers perform spatial tasks is described. Clinical pathologies of spatial attention, including visual extinction, simu…

Disturbance of social cognition after traumatic orbitofrontal brain injury.

A patient with traumatic orbitomedial frontal lobe damage demonstrated good neurocognitive recovery but a lasting, profound disturbance of emotional regulation and social cognition. Initial neuropsychological findings included a complete anosmia, mildly reduced fluency and disturbed motor regulation. The impairments of fluency and motor regulation resolved, and formal measures of "frontal lobe" functioning were generally intact. However, she remained impaired on tasks requiring the interpretation of social situations, which mirrored her impairment in real life functioning. This disturbance in …

LIM-kinase1 hemizygosity implicated in impaired visuospatial constructive cognition.

To identify genes important for human cognitive development, we studied Williams syndrome (WS), a developmental disorder that includes poor visuospatial constructive cognition. Here we describe two families with a partial WS phenotype; affected members have the specific WS cognitive profile and vascular disease, but lack other WS features. Submicroscopic chromosome 7q11.23 deletions cosegregate with this phenotype in both families. DNA sequence analyses of the region affected by the smallest deletion (83.6 kb) revealed two genes, elastin (ELN) and LIM-kinase1 (LIMK1). The latter encodes a nove…

Cognition and white matter hyperintensities in older depressed patients.

OBJECTIVE: The authors compared amounts of white matter hyperintensity in late- and early-onset depressed patients and never-depressed older subjects, compared neuropsychological function in these groups, and investigated the association between white matter hyperintensities and cognitive function in depression. METHOD: Sixty currently depressed patients whose first depression occurred after age 50 years, 35 depressed patients over age 50 whose first depression occurred before age 35, and 165 nonpsychiatrically ill subjects over age 50 underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neuropsych

[Cognition disorders and parkinsonian syndrome: diffuse Lewy body disease?].

A 68 year old man developed progressive cognitive impairment with an akinetic-rigid syndrome which was atypically responsive to levodopa. The patient died after 18 months and the postmortem examination showed typical Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra and pale bodies in the cortex which were unlabelled by ubiquitin antibodies. This case is particular by the neuropathological examination (no immunoreactivity to antibodies against ubiquitin) and by the abnormal response to treatment (dystonia). These two aspects are discussed.

Late clinical testing of cognition enhancers: demonstration of efficacy.

The major difference between clinical trials for efficacy and Phase I trials is their duration; clinical trials of cognition enhancers, for example in senile dementia, require at least 6 months. Because no widely accepted treatment is available, the methodology for these trials is still in a the process of refinement. Double blind placebo-controlled trials are considered to be mandatory particularly by the FDA. Parallel group designs seem preferable and the so-called "enriched design" seems to possess advantages over more classical procedures. Outcome measures should include ratings by clinici…

The improvement of cognition and personality after carotid endarterectomy.

Seventeen patients with at least 50% carotid artery stenosis were given intelligence and personality tests just prior to and 6 weeks after carotid endarterectomy. When compared with nine control patients, the endarterectomy patients showed increases in verbal-comprehension I.Q., perceptual-organization I.Q., decreases in time to complete perceptual motor tasks, decrease in asphasic signs, and significant reductions in anxiety, suspicion, confusion, disorientation, and other personality symptoms generally associated with senility. Statistical evaluation showed these results to be valid.

The effect of growth hormone-releasing hormone on cognition and brain connectivity in adults with cognition ranging from normal to mild cognitive impairment.

Cognitive decline with age and other clinical conditions are linked with reduced hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function. Stimulating the HPA axis with supplemental growth hormone (GH) treatment can improve cognition, however, potential direct effects of stimulation with growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) are not established. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial, we assessed 22 subjects with baseline cognition ranging from normal cognition to mild cognitive impairment before and after 10 weeks of treatment with low-dose tesamorelin (1 mg; GHRH analog) or placebo. W…

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene exposure, cognition, and cortical thickness at middle age in US Latinas (the CHAMACOS Maternal Cognition Study): a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a persistent organochlorine pesticide, continues to be used for malaria control under the Stockholm Convention. We investigated associations between exposure to DDT and its metabolite dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and midlife cognitive function and brain structure among primarily Mexican-born Latina women in an agricultural community in California, USA. METHODS: In the CHAMACOS Maternal Cognition Study, a prospective cohort study, we assessed global and domain-specific cognitive performance in 472 women. A subset of 95 women underwen…

Social cognition in women with borderline personality disorder based on an exhaustive analysis of the Movie for Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) categories.

A significant number of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms are manifested in the interpersonal context. This can be explained by the difficulties in attributing the mental states of oneself and others, which constitutes social cognition. Errors in social cognition are interrelated with the affective, cognitive, impulsive, and interpersonal areas of the person with BPD. The aims of this study was to analyze social cognition in women with BPD compared with a control group and to analyze social cognition in BPD based on BPD symptoms and its severity. To assess social cognition, we use…

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Social Cognition Among People Living with HIV: Implications for Non-Social Cognition and Social Everyday Functioning.

Social cognition-the complex mental ability to perceive social stimuli and negotiate the social environment-has emerged as an important cognitive ability needed for social functioning, everyday functioning, and quality of life. Deficits in social cognition have been well documented in those with severe mental illness including schizophrenia and depression, those along the autism spectrum, and those with other brain disorders where such deficits profoundly impact everyday life. Moreover, subtle deficits in social cognition have been observed in other clinical populations, especially those that …
