A four-session mindfulness-based cognitive therapy enhances problem-focused coping strategies in mothers of neonates in NICUs.

BACKGROUND: The birth of an infant with an abnormality or a postpartum disease and subsequent admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is very stressful for mothers. The adoption of effective coping strategies can enable the mother to tolerate the critical conditions of the newborn’s illness. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term (four 2-hour sessions) mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) program on improving coping strategies among mothers of infants admitted to the NICU. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pre-test-post-test

Sex-dependent therapeutic effects of nano-curcumin on alzheimer's disease: enhanced cognitive and physiological restoration in female mice.

Curcumin (Cur) is a bioactive compound with neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, though its clinical application is limited by poor bioavailability. This study assessed the impact of nanocapsulated curcumin (NcCur), formulated Eudragit (EUD) polymer, in a sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) mouse model induced by intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (STZ), with attention to sex-specific differences. Mice received STZ (3 nmol/3 µL) or 0.9% saline on days 1 and 3, followed by intragastric treatment with Cur or NcCur (10 mg/kg, on alternate days) from day 22 until euthanasia - a dose pr

AAV-aMTD-Parkin, a therapeutic gene delivery cargo, enhances motor and cognitive functions in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.

Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), have a global prevalence and profoundly impact both motor and cognitive functions. Although adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapy has shown promise, its application for treating central nervous system (CNS) diseases faces several challenges, including effective delivery of AAV vectors across the blood-brain barrier, determining optimal dosages, and achieving targeted distribution. To address these challenges, we have developed a fusion delivery therapeutic cargo called AAV-aMTD-Parkin, which c

Enhancing Quality of Life in Symptomatic Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Patients: A Systematic Analysis of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) significantly impacts patients' lives, contributing to morbidity, reduced quality of life (QoL), and psychological distress. Conventional treatment approaches primarily focus on rhythm control through pharmacologic therapy, often overlooking the patient's holistic well-being. HYPOTHESIS: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a well-established intervention for modifying dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors, may provide a beneficial nonpharmacological approach to improving QoL in symptomatic PAF patients. METHODS: A systematic review was conducte

Digital Storytelling Intervention for Enhancing the Social Participation of People With Mild Cognitive Impairment: Co-Design and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Community-based social participation has shown promise in delaying cognitive decline in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) who are at risk of developing dementia. Although group storytelling interventions have proven effective, the need for a skilled workforce to support people with MCI can limit broader community implementation. Technology-based interventions may offer a solution to this limitation by replicating the abilities of therapists. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to co-design a digital storytelling intervention and evaluate its usability. METHODS: This co-des

Enhancing early detection of cognitive decline in the elderly: a comparative study utilizing large language models in clinical notes.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) have shown promising performance in various healthcare domains, but their effectiveness in identifying specific clinical conditions in real medical records is less explored. This study evaluates LLMs for detecting signs of cognitive decline in real electronic health record (EHR) clinical notes, comparing their error profiles with traditional models. The insights gained will inform strategies for performance enhancement. METHODS: This study, conducted at Mass General Brigham in Boston, MA, analysed clinical notes from the four years prior to a 2019 diag

Dietary Fiber and Microbiota Metabolite Receptors Enhance Cognition and Alleviate Disease in the 5xFAD Mouse Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder with poorly understood etiology. AD has several similarities with other "Western lifestyle" inflammatory diseases, where the gut microbiome and immune pathways have been associated. Previously, we and others have noted the involvement of metabolite-sensing GPCRs and their ligands, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), in protection of numerous Western diseases in mouse models, such as Type I diabetes and hypertension. Depletion of GPR43, GPR41, or GPR109A accelerates disease, whereas high SCFA yielding diets protect in mouse models. Here, we

Enhanced angiogenesis in the thalamus induced by a novel TSPO ligand ameliorates cognitive deficits after focal cortical infarction.

Neuronal loss in the ipsilateral thalamus after focal cortical infarction participates in post-stroke cognitive deficits, and enhanced angiogenesis in the thalamus is expected to reduce neuronal damage. We hypothesize that novel translocator protein (TSPO) ligand, 2-Cl-MGV-1, can promote angiogenesis, attenuate neuronal loss in the thalamus, and ameliorate post-stroke cognitive deficits. Cortical infarction was induced by distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO) in stroke-prone renovascular hypertensive rats. 2-Cl-MGV-1 or dimethyl sulfoxide was administered 24 h after dMCAO and then fo

A clinicopathological study of selected cognitive impairment cases in Lothian, Scotland: enhanced CJD surveillance in the 65 + population group.

BACKGROUND: Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) is primarily associated with dietary exposure to bovine-spongiform-encephalopathy. Cases may be missed in the elderly population where dementia is common with less frequent referral to specialist neurological services. This study's twin aims were to determine the feasibility of a method to detect possible missed cases in the elderly population and to identify any such cases. METHODS: A multi-site study was set-up in Lothian in 2016, to determine the feasibility of enhanced CJD-surveillance in the 65 + population-group, and undertake a clini

Enhanced cerebro-cerebellar functional connectivity reverses cognitive impairment following electroconvulsive therapy in major depressive disorder.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a rapidly acting and effective treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD), is frequently accompanied by cognitive impairment. Recent studies have documented that ECT reorganizes dysregulated inter/intra- connected cerebral networks, including the affective network, the cognitive control network(CCN) and default mode network (DMN).Moreover, cerebellum is thought to play an important role in emotion regulation and cognitive processing. However, little is known about the relationship between cerebro-cerebellar connectivity alterations following ECT and antidepr

Pre-scan cortisol is differentially associated with enhanced connectivity to the cognitive control network in young adults with a history of depression.

BACKGROUND: We have previously demonstrated that pre-scan salivary cortisol is associated with attentuated frontal-subcortical brain activation during emotion processesing and semantic list-learning paradigms in depressed subjects. Additionally, altered functional connectivity is observed after remission of acute depression symptoms (rMDD). It is unknown whether cortisol also predicts altered functional connectivity during remission. METHODS: Participants were 47 healthy controls (HC) and 73 rMDD, 18-30 years old who provided salivary cortisol samples before and after undergoing resting-state

N-methyl-D-aspartate Partial Agonist Enhanced Intensive Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Panic Disorder in Adolescents.

Panic disorder (PD) can result in significant functional impairment. Studies of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for PD have demonstrated response rates ranging between 38 and 65%. D-cycloserine (DCS), a partial NMDA agonist, may enhance the effects of exposure-based therapy for PD in adults; however, no studies have examined its effect in adolescents with PD. This study examined the feasibility and acceptability of the use of DCS to augment intensive CBT for PD in adolescents. Twenty-four adolescents (ages 12-17) participated in this randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, to

The relationship between self-enhancing humor and precuneus volume in young healthy individuals with high and low cognitive empathy.

A self-enhancing humor style (SEHS) plays an important role in the regulation of negative emotion through humorous perspective-taking. Following the mind-reading theories of humor, we investigated the relationship between gray-matter volume (GMV) of brain areas related to theory of mind and SEHS in young college students, using voxel-based morphometry analysis. We then performed a voxel-wise analysis of covariance to assess any moderation effect of cognitive empathy on the relationship. Results demonstrated that higher SEHS scores were associated with larger GMV of the precuneus in the group w

Cognitive behavioural therapy attenuates the enhanced early facial stimuli processing in social anxiety disorders: an ERP investigation.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of patients with social anxiety have demonstrated abnormal early processing of facial stimuli in social contexts. In other words, patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) tend to exhibit enhanced early facial processing when compared to healthy controls. Few studies have examined the temporal electrophysiological event-related potential (ERP)-indexed profiles when an individual with SAD compares faces to objects in SAD. Systematic comparisons of ERPs to facial/object stimuli before and after therapy are also lacking. We used a passive visual detection paradigm w

Chronic functional bowel syndrome enhances gut-brain axis dysfunction, neuroinflammation, cognitive impairment, and vulnerability to dementia.

The irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder world wide that lasts for decades. The human gut harbors a diverse population of microbial organisms which is symbiotic and important for well being. However, studies on conventional, germ-free, and obese animals have shown that alteration in normal commensal gut microbiota and an increase in pathogenic microbiota-termed "dysbiosis", impact gut function, homeostasis, and health. Diarrhea, constipation, visceral hypersensitivity, and abdominal pain arise in IBS from the gut-induced dysfunctional metaboli
