Cognitive-behavioural stimulation protocol for severely brain-damaged patients in the post-acute stage in developmental age.

PURPOSE: To present a cognitive-behavioural stimulation (CBS) protocol designed to help severely damaged patients in the early post-acute stage by describing the underlying methodology and assessing its efficacy compared to traditional rehabilitation methods. This protocol combines multisensory stimulation and cognitive-behavioural techniques to elicit and intensify the occurrence of adaptive responses and reduce maladaptive behavioural patterns. METHODS: A control group and an experimental group--both evaluated with the Levels of Cognitive Functioning Assessment Scale (LOCFAS)--were compared

Auditory training improves neural timing in the human brainstem.

The auditory brainstem response reflects neural encoding of the acoustic characteristic of a speech syllable with remarkable precision. Some children with learning impairments demonstrate abnormalities in this preconscious measure of neural encoding especially in background noise. This study investigated whether auditory training targeted to remediate perceptually-based learning problems would alter the neural brainstem encoding of the acoustic sound structure of speech in such children. Nine subjects, clinically diagnosed with a language-based learning problem (e.g., dyslexia), worked with au

Music-based and auditory-based interventions for reading difficulties: A literature review.

Remediation of reading difficulties through music and auditory-based interventions in children with impairments in reading (such as developmental dyslexia) has been suggested in light of the putative neural and cognitive overlaps between the music and language domains. Several studies had explored the effect of music training on reading development, showing mixed results. However, to date, the meta-analyses on this topic did not differentiate the studies on typical children from those on children with reading difficulties. To draw a clear picture of the remedial effects of music-based and audi

Both Individual and Group-Based Neuropsychological Interventions of Dyslexia Improve Processing Speed in Young Adults: A Randomized Controlled Study.

Effectiveness of individual and group-based neuropsychological interventions on cognitive aspects of dyslexia in young adults was evaluated. Dyslexic adults were randomly assigned into individual intervention (n = 40), group intervention (n = 40), or wait-list control group (n = 40). The interventions focused on cognitive strategy learning, supporting self-esteem, and using psychoeducation. Cognitive performance and symptoms were assessed via psychometric testing and self-report questionnaires at baseline, after the intervention/wait-list control time at 5 months and at 10 months. And, 15 mont

The Effects of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Antidepressant Response on Cold Cognition: A Single-Arm Prospective Longitudinal Study.

PURPOSE: The cognitive neuropsychological model of depression suggests that the cognitive deficits observed in depressed subjects are the result of attenuated top-down cognitive control resulting in increased bottom-up emotional processing. Remediation of cognitive impairments in cold cognition has been proposed as a valuable treatment for depression. The study aimed to examine the effects of clinical response to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on cold cognition over the course of 8 weeks in medication-refractory depressed subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two medica

Brief screening for cognitive impairment in addictive disorders.

Chronic use of mind altering substances can lead to a wide variety of neuropsychological deficits, affecting the domains of attention, learning, memory, reasoning. Executive functions such as working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control may specifically be impaired. These deficits can impact engagement in effective psychosocial interventions. Mild to moderate cognitive dysfunction may not be picked up in routine clinical examination or through commonly used tests like the mini-mental state examination (MMSE). Detailed neuropsychological tests, although extremely valuable, are t

Reducing learning and psychosocial disparities in Latino children with cancer: a randomized intervention trial.

BACKGROUND: We developed a high-intensity parenting intervention program (HIP) to help parents support the academic success of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs), who often face post-treatment challenges affecting their school-related functioning. This randomized controlled trial (NCT03178617) evaluated HIP's efficacy compared with lower-intensity, single-session, treatment-as-usual services (lower-intensity program [LIP]) in Latino families. Primary outcomes were parenting efficacy and CCSs' school functioning; secondary outcomes included parenting knowledge and measures of CCSs' academic perf

Neuroimaging features of cognitive impairments in schizophrenia and major depressive disorder.

Cognitive dysfunctions are one of the key symptoms of schizophrenia (SZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD), which exist not only during the onset of diseases but also before the onset, even after the remission of psychiatric symptoms. With the development of neuroimaging techniques, these non-invasive approaches provide valuable insights into the underlying pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders and information of cognitive remediation interventions. This review synthesizes existing neuroimaging studies to examine domains of cognitive impairment, particularly processing speed, memory, attenti…

Reading deficits in schizophrenia and their relationship to developmental dyslexia: A review.

Although schizophrenia and developmental dyslexia are considered distinct disorders in terms of clinical presentation and functional outcome, they both involve disruption in the processes that support skilled reading, including language, auditory perception, visual perception, oculomotor control, and executive function. Further, recent work has proposed a common neurodevelopmental basis for the two disorders, as suggested by genetic and pathophysiological overlap. Thus, these lines of research suggest that reading may be similarly impacted in schizophrenia and dyslexia. In this review, we surv

A Review of Possible Herbal Treatment in Multiple Sclerosis in Traditional Persian Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of central nervous system (CNS) and is the most common cause of neurologic disability in young adults (20-40 years old). About 2.5 million patients all over the world are suffering from MS. Common symptoms of the disease include sensory disorders, optic neuritis, and limb weakness. Following disease progression, other symptoms like fatigue, bladder disorders, and cognitive impairment also occur. Traditional Persian medicine (TPM) is an ancient medical system from 6000 years ago in Persia, where Iran was its most important st

Neighborhood environmental deprivation predicts the generalized neurocognitive deficit in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The generalized neurocognitive deficit is a core feature of schizophrenia (SZ). However, no current treatments have demonstrated satisfactory efficacy in remediating cognitive impairment in this population. This lack of treatment progress might be due in part to the failure to consider broader environmental factors and social determinants of health. The current paper explored the contributing role of these factors to the generalized neurocognitive deficit in SZ. METHODS: Participants included 114 outpatients with SZ and 117 matched healthy controls (CN) who completed a cross-secti

Pharmacotherapy in multiple sclerosis-induced cognitive impairment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) commonly complicated by cognitive impairment. Unfortunately, no medical therapy has been proved to improve cognitive problems in these patients. This meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of different categories of drugs on the minimal assessment of cognitive function in MS (MACFIMS)-related tasks outcome in MS patients. To this end, a systematic evaluation was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. Among a total of 128 publications, 31 studies met our inclusion cr
