The impact of lifestyle restrictions on memory in older adults.

Engagement in a variety of lifestyle activities, such as intellectual stimulation, social interaction, and physical exercise, is thought to be a key contributor to cognitive reserve, helping the brain compensate for age-related or pathological changes. An open question is whether restrictions on lifestyle activities, even if relatively brief, might have detrimental effects on cognition. The COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented restrictions on the kinds of lifestyle activities that have been shown to be protective against age-related cognitive decline. In the present study, we captured change…

Bilingualism and cognition: The impact of age of acquisition, language use, and proficiency in cognitively unimpaired older adults.

BackgroundThe positive effect of bilingualism as a cognitive reserve factor in aging remains inconclusive, with inconsistencies often stemming from treating bilingualism as a dichotomous variable rather than a dynamic, multidimensional experience.ObjectiveTo investigate the impact of bilingualism on cognition in cognitively unimpaired older adults, focusing on age of language acquisition (AoA), proficiency, and usage throughout life.MethodsData from 2415 participants (aged 45-74) from the Alzheimer's and Families (ALFA) study were analyzed. Cognitive assessments included the Mini-Mental State …

Identifying factors influencing cognitive outcomes after anodal transcranial direct current stimulation in older adults with and without cognitive impairment: A systematic review.

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve cognition in healthy older adults, those with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and … tcomes, but further research is warranted. tDCS outcomes were not consistently associated with age, cognitive reserve, sex, and AD risk factors. Accounting for individual differences in baseline cognition, particularly for combined interventions, may thus maximize the therapeutic potential of tDCS.

Cognitive Functioning in Rural Older Adults: The Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support.

Background: Aging is a multidimensional process influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Social support contributes to cognitive reserve by reducing stress, promoting mental engagement, and reinforcing a sense of belonging. Objective: To examine the association between perceived social support and cognitive functioning among older adults, and to investigate whether social support mediates the relationship between living arrangements and cognitive performance. Methods: The sample included 265 older adults aged 65 years and above, recruited using snowball sampling between Mar…

Cerebral Hypoxia: Its Role in Age-Related Chronic and Acute Cognitive Dysfunction.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) has been reported with widely varying frequency but appears to be strongly associated with aging. Outside of the surgical arena, chronic and acute cerebral hypoxia may exist as a result of respiratory, cardiovascular, or anemic conditions. Hypoxia has been extensively implicated in cognitive impairment. Furthermore, disease states associated with hypoxia both accompany and progress with aging. Perioperative cerebral hypoxia is likely underdiagnosed, and its contribution to POCD is underappreciated. Herein, we discuss the various disease processes and

Education modulates brain maintenance in presymptomatic frontotemporal dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitively engaging lifestyles have been associated with reduced risk of conversion to dementia. Multiple mechanisms have been advocated, including increased brain volumes (ie, brain reserve) and reduced disease progression (ie, brain maintenance). In cross-sectional studies of presymptomatic frontotemporal dementia (FTD), higher education has been related to increased grey matter volume. Here, we examine the effect of education on grey matter loss over time. METHODS: Two-hundred twenty-nine subjects at-risk of carrying a pathogenic mutation leading to FTD underwent longitudinal c

From Belonging to Responsibility: How Sense of Place Amplifies Normative Drivers of Pro-Environmental Behaviors in Nature Reserves.

The pro-environmental behaviors of residents in national nature reserves are critical to ecological conservation and reserve management. Using survey data from 872 residents across 21 national nature reserves in Yunnan Province, this study integrates the Norm Activation Model and Sense of Place to examine the determinants and mechanisms of residents' pro-environmental behaviors. Results show that within the Norm Activation Model, awareness of consequences strengthens ascription of responsibility, which in turn reinforces personal norms. Personal norms exert significant positive effects on both

Cognitive engagement may slow clinical progression and brain atrophy in Huntington's disease.

Lifelong cognitive engagement conveys benefits in Huntington's disease (HD) and may positively affect non-cognitive domains in other populations. However, the effect of lifelong cognitive engagement on the progression of motor and psychiatric domains in HD remains unknown, as is its neurobiological basis. Forty-five HD individuals completed the Cognitive Reserve Questionnaire (CRQ) and longitudinal clinical evaluation (maximum total of six visits, mean inter-assessment duration of 13.53 ± 4.1 months). Of these, thirty-three underwent longitudinal neuroimaging (18 ± 6 months follow-up). General…

Electroencephalographic activity before and after cognitive effort in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Numerous studies have detected elevated electroencephalographic (EEG) theta/beta ratio (TBR) or theta power in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and therefore TBR has been suggested to be a promising biomarker of ADHD. At the same time, recent theoretical models have emphasized the heterogeneity of ADHD and the notion that cognitive deficits in ADHD are not fixed but fluctuate according to contextual and state factors. Surprisingly, so far the context- or state-dependency of EEG abnormalities in ADHD has hardly been addressed. Therefore, in the current study, 3 minu

Sensory retraining: a cognitive behavioral therapy for altered sensation.

Sensory retraining teaches the patient to ignore or blot out postinjury unpleasant orofacial sensations to optimally tune into and decipher the weakened and damaged signals from the tissues. Sensory retraining is a simple, inexpensive, noninvasive exercise program, which initiated shortly after injury, can lessen the objectionable impression of orofacial altered sensations. Sensory retraining exercises are most effective on decreasing the perceived burden associated with hypoesthetic orofacial altered sensations.

Toward a Behavioral Reserve Model in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral impairment is common in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and strongly affects autonomy, caregiver burden, and outcomes, yet predictors of vulnerability remain unclear. We investigated whether premorbid regulatory traits and socio-educational exposures are associated with behavioral phenotypes in ALS within a behavioral reserve framework. METHODS: We analyzed 965 consecutively assessed patients with ALS from a prospective tertiary-center cohort. Behavioral impairment was measured using the Frontal Systems Behavior Scale (FrSBe; family-rated before and after onset) and,

Wearable Inertial Sensor Analysis of Turning Performance Reveals Motor Reserve Effects in Drug-Naïve Parkinson's Disease.

Introduction: Motor reserve (MR) has been hypothesized as a protective factor against age-related and pathological motor decline, potentially enhancing quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the influence of MR on motor performance, assessed via mobile health technology (MHT), in drug-naïve Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Methods: Consecutive drug-naïve PD patients and age-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent cognitive and motor assessments. Turning MHT parameters were extracted from the Timed Up and Go test (TUG) performed at self-selected and fast speeds. Participants were ca

Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: Early-Life Antecedents and Long-Term Implications for the Brain, Aging, Stroke, and Dementia.

Cerebral small vessel disease is common in older adults and increases the risk of stroke, cognitive impairment, and dementia. While often attributed to midlife vascular risk factors such as hypertension, factors from earlier in life may contribute to later small vessel disease risk. In this review, we summarize current evidence for early-life effects on small vessel disease, stroke and dementia focusing on prenatal nutrition, and cognitive ability, education, and socioeconomic status in childhood. We discuss possible reasons for these associations, including differences in brain resilience and

Common High Altitudes Illnesses a Primer for Healthcare Provider.

Exposure to high altitude imposes significant strain on cardiopulmonary system and the brain. As a consequence, sojourners to high altitude frequently experience sleep disturbances, often reporting restless and sleepless nights. At altitudes above 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) almost all healthy subjects develop periodic breathing especially during NREM sleep. Sleep architecture gradually improves with increased NREM and REM sleep despite persistence of periodic breathing. The primary reason for periodic breathing at high altitude is a hypoxic-induced increase in chemoreceptor sensitivity to changes

Infant electroencephalogram coherence and early childhood inhibitory control: Foundations for social cognition in late childhood.

Social cognition is a set of complex processes that mediate much of human behavior. The development of these skills is related to and interdependent on other cognitive processes, particularly inhibitory control. Brain regions associated with inhibitory control and social cognition overlap functionally and structurally, especially with respect to frontal brain areas. We proposed that the neural foundations of inhibitory control and social cognition are measurable in infancy. We used structural equation modeling and showed that 10-month frontotemporal neuroconnectivity measured using electroence

Operationalizing perioperative clearance reserve: a reserve-load interaction model for neurocognitive outcomes in older surgical patients.

Older patients who undergo similar operations and receive comparable anesthetic care do not always recover cognitively in the same way. Inflammation explains an important part of perioperative brain injury, yet it does not fully account for why the response settles quickly in one patient and persists in another. We suggest that this difference may reflect an interaction between the patient's preoperative capacity for brain fluid and solute clearance and the load imposed by surgery and anesthesia. In the proposed model, baseline clearance reserve is a continuous latent phenotype informed primar
