Influenza coinfection inhibits control of mycobacterial infection in a human challenge model.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is a dynamic continuum. Clinical outcomes reflect complex host-pathogen interactions. Epidemiological and animal studies have suggested influenza coinfection as a risk factor for progression from contained infection to active disease, but human studies have been lacking. Using a whole blood luminescent mycobacterial growth inhibition assay within a human influenza challenge study, we show that influenza infection reduces immunological control of mycobacterial growth. Transcriptome-wide RNA sequencing, cytokine and cellular analyses of subjects' blood before…

Human immunodeficiency virus and Helicobacter pylori coinfection: Immune modulation and eradication failure.

The relationship between Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is bidirectional and complex. Helicobacter pylori, by inducing local gastric and systemic immune responses, counteracts HIV invasion to CD4+ cells and other inflammatory cells and can reactivate HIV in latently infected immune cells. Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, by reducing secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, reduces the incidence of H. pylori-induced gastric pathology. Gastric lymphoma regressed in some cases of people living with HIV (PLWH) after H. pylori eradication. Triple thera

Invasive Candidiasis Coinfection in Patients with Severe COVID-19 Disease: Scoping Review.

Coinfection rates of candidiasis in patients affected by COVID-19 had a significantly increase during the sanitary contingency. The objective of this scoping review is to analyze the available scientific evidence around the coinfection of invasive candidiasis in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 disease. Online databases such as PubMed, EBSCO, SciFinder, Scopus, and SciELO were used to analyze the different scientific studies published from January 2020 to December 2022, selecting 48 publications that reported comorbidity between invasive candidiasis and COVID-19 as a study variable. …

Tuberculosis and HIV coinfection: Progress and challenges towards reducing incidence and mortality.

HIV-associated tuberculosis (HIV-TB) is associated with disproportionate mortality: approximately 24% of the 660,000 individuals with TB and HIV died, compared to 11% of those without HIV dying from TB in 2023. HIV is a key driver of ongoing high TB incidence in many countries, particularly in the World Health Organization Africa region, and TB is the leading cause of hospitalization in people with HIV (PWH) globally. Significant developments have occurred recently concerning the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and management of HIV-TB. Antiretroviral therapy and novel regimens for TB preven

Severe Pneumonia and Cytomegalovirus Coinfection in Infants with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is known to cause fatal pneumonia in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected children. There is a paucity of literature on pediatric HIV and CMV coinfection in India. We describe six cases of severe pneumonia in infants infected with HIV. Four of these infants also had CMV coinfection, detected by urine polymerase chain reaction. There was a lack of antenatal and postnatal care in all cases. All four infants with CMV coinfection succumbed to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, whereas the other two survived. In conclusion, a high index of suspicion for CMV sho…

Inflammatory progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy with human T-cell lymphotropic virus-1 coinfection.

A middle-aged man with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in a human T-cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) carrier on haemodialysis presented with mild dysarthria and ataxia. Brain MRI revealed asymmetric T2-hyperintense lesions in the cerebral white matter, cerebellum and brainstem. A small amount of JC virus (JCV) genome in cerebrospinal fluid was detected by PCR and cerebellar biopsy demonstrated JCV-DNA presence. Pathological findings showed demyelinating lesions and glial cells with mildly enlarged nuclei, accompanied by T-lymphocytes, neutrophils and plasma cell infiltr

Moyamoya Syndrome Secondary to Coinfection of Meningovascular Neurosyphilis and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

Moyamoya angiopathy is a rare cerebrovascular condition characterized by insufficient cerebral blood flow resulting from arterial vessel narrowing or occlusion, potentially leading to cerebral ischemia due to inadequate oxygen and nutrient supply to the brain tissue. The development of collateral vessels in stenotic regions, inherently fragile and prone to rupture, may further precipitate intracerebral hemorrhage. Alongside focal neurological symptoms, the common clinical presentations of Moyamoya angiopathy encompass headaches, dizziness, cognitive impairments, seizures, and involuntary movem

Leptospirosis and Dengue Coinfection-Associated Multi-Organ Dysfunction Syndrome: A Case Report.

Dengue and leptospirosis are frequently discussed separately, with dengue causing rash and leptospirosis causing jaundice. Currently, there are more and more reports of coinfections. The comparable clinical symptoms of both infections make it challenging to distinguish between leptospirosis and dengue. Differentiating between leptospirosis and dengue is crucial since leptospirosis has a more favorable prognosis with early antibiotic therapy, whereas dengue does not have a specific treatment, although early detection is essential for close monitoring and cautious fluid management. Here, we high…

Exophiala dermatitidis coinfection with nontuberculous mycobacteria: A case report and literature review.

Six years ago, a 60-year-old man presented to our hospital with a cough and sputum. Upon suspicion of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection, he was followed up at our hospital. Because the abnormal shadows in the bilateral lung fields deteriorated slightly over 6 years, bronchoscopy was performed. Exophiala dermatitidis and Mycobacterium intracellulare were detected in the bronchial lavage fluid. The patient underwent follow-up examinations without drug administration. Currently, the patient's condition remains stable. E. dermatitidis is regulatory found in the lungs of patients with cy

Tropism of Puumala orthohantavirus and Endoparasite Coinfection in the Bank Vole Reservoir.

In Europe, most cases of human hantavirus disease are caused by Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) transmitted by bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus, syn. Myodes glareolus), in which PUUV causes inconspicuous infection. Little is known about tropism and endoparasite coinfections in PUUV-infected reservoir and spillover-infected rodents. Here, we characterized PUUV tropism, pathological changes and endoparasite coinfections. The voles and some non-reservoir rodents were examined histologically, immunohistochemically, by in situ hybridization, indirect IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and reve…

The Impact of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Mono- and Coinfection on Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have recently been linked to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). However, the impact of Neisseria gonorrhoeae on risk of HDP is not well understood. This study determined the impact of gonorrhea and gonorrhea coinfection on HDP and other adverse pregnancy outcomes in a population with a high screening rate and presumed treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study included 29 821 singleton births between 2016 and 2021. The STI testing results, demographic variables, and pregnancy outcomes were identified from electronic health records. …

Synergism and Antagonism of Bacterial-Viral Coinfection in the Upper Respiratory Tract.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) is a leading cause of pneumonia in children under 5 years of age. Coinfection by pneumococci and respiratory viruses enhances disease severity. Little is known about pneumococcal coinfections with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Here, we developed a novel infant mouse model of coinfection using pneumonia virus of mice (PVM), a murine analogue of RSV, to examine the dynamics of coinfection in the upper respiratory tract, an anatomical niche that is essential for host-to-host transmission and progression to disease. Coinfection increased damage to t…

NLRP6 Induces Lung Injury and Inflammation Early in Brucella and Influenza Coinfection.

(1) Background: With the resurgence of brucellosis epidemics in China in recent years, the chances of a brucella coinfection with other common respiratory pathogens, such as the influenza virus, have increased dramatically. However, little is known about the pathogenicity or the mechanisms of brucella and influenza coinfections. (2) Methods: To clarify the interventions in the early stages of lung damage due to brucella and influenza coinfections, we evaluated the effect of the coinfection on disease progression and mortality using a coinfection model in WT mice and NLRP6-/- mice, and we verif…

SARS-CoV-2 and Streptococcus pneumoniae Coinfection in a Previously Healthy Child.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. This novel coronavirus has been responsible for a pandemic that continues to devastate nations worldwide. COVID-19, like other viruses, causes pneumonia. However, unlike other viral respiratory tract infections such as influenza, bacterial coinfection in COVID-19 patients has uncommonly been described in adult and pediatric patients. We report a case of Streptococcus pneumoniae and COVID-19 coinfection in a previously healthy 4-year-o…
