Electromotor activity of the cecum and ascending colon: the concept of 'individual pacemakers'.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The cecum is described as differing anatomically from the ascending colon (AC); yet their similarity or difference in terms of motile activity has not been studied sufficiently. The cecum is separated from the AC by the cecocolonic junction (CCJ) which contains a cecocolonic sphincter. We assumed that the motile activity of the AC is different from that of the cecum and hypothesized that both the AC and the cecum might have different pacemakers which initiate the motile activity. This hypothesis was investigated in the current study. METHODS: The study was performed in 10 sub

Myoelectric activity of the cecum and proximal loop of the ascending colon in cows.

Six Jersey cows were implanted with 8 pairs of bipolar electrodes: 1 in the jejunum, 1 in the ileum, 3 in the cecum, and 3 in the proximal loop of the ascending colon (PLAC). Myoelectric activity was recorded at 2- to 3-day intervals, 3 times for 8 hours or 4 times for 6 hours, using a computer-based oscillograph and data-acquisition program. Mean (+/- SD) duration of the migrating myoelectric complex (MMC) in the ileum was 84.52 +/- 4.87 minutes. Phases I and II of the MMC lasted significantly (P < 0.05) longer than phase III. Two types (A and B) of cyclic activity were found in the cecum and

A topological study of the epithelial cell proliferation in the ascending colon of the mouse.

Epithelial cell proliferation has been studied from a topological point of view, in the ascending colon of the mouse. The ascending colon was investigated because it offered the possibility of studying distinct mucosal sites according to whether they are situated on folds or away from the folds. Consequently fold top areas (FTA), fold side areas (FSA), flat mucosa areas (OFA) have been studied individually. To determine mitotic activity, we have used the technique of arrested metaphases by a stathmokinetic agent. The estimate of the epithelial compartment size has been undertaken according to

Clinical effects of ascending colon patching ileorectal heart-shaped anastomosis on total colonic aganglionosis.

OBJECTIVE: We studied the clinical effects of ascending colon patching ileorectal heart-shaped anastomosis in treating total colonic aganglionosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From June 2006 to June 2013, 15 children with severe abdominal distension, low small intestine obstruction and intestinal perforation in the neonatal period, were enrolled in this study. In phase I, patients received emergency terminal ileum stoma plus multi-site colonic biopsy and 6 to 12 months later, ascending colon patching ileorectal heart-shaped anastomosis was conducted in phase II. The occurrence of postoperative comp

Intestinal tuberculosis mimicking Crohn's disease with ascending colon sinus tract: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) complicated by sinus tract is clinically characterized by nonspecific symptoms. This condition necessitates multidisciplinary collaboration, and a multidimensional differential diagnostic approach integrating clinical manifestations, imaging findings, and pathological examination is imperative for confirmation. CASE SUMMARY: A 26-year-old female presented with a 1-month history of recurrent right lower abdominal pain. She had previously been misdiagnosed with appendicitis and Crohn's disease (CD). Through a comprehensive diagnostic workup including sm

Ascending colon perforation by a migrated pancreatic spontaneous dislodgment stent: a case report.

Here, we report a case of a 74-year-old woman treated for acute cholecystitis. She initially underwent percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage; however, cholecystitis recurred when the drain was clamped. Therefore, endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage (ETGBD) was performed. Endoscopic sphincterotomy was performed, and a transpapillary gallbladder stent was placed. Additionally, a pancreatic spontaneous dislodgment stent (PSDS) was inserted to prevent post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis. Cholecystitis resolved, and the patient was discharged seven d

Duodenocolic fistula after laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Duodenoileal and duodenocolic fistulas are rare complications often associated with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or peptic ulcers. Fistulas that form between the duodenum and a gastrointestinal anastomosis site following colorectal cancer surgery are extremely rare. Here, we report a rare case of duodenocolic fistula following laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man, who underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection for ascending colon cancer, exhibited no intraoperative injury to the duodenum. On postoperative day (P

[Report of a Case Having Adult Intussusception Associated with an Ascending Colon Cancer].

A 66-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with complaints of pain in the lower right abdomen and bloody stools for 2 days. The WBC counts of 9,100/μL, CRP levels of 5.0 mg/dL, Hb counts of 9.8 g/dL were without normal range, but no other abnormal values were noted. Abdominal CT showed intussusception of the right colon with a solid tumor. Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a type 1 tumor in the ascending colon. The scope was not passed through to the oral side, and repositioning by endoscopy was unsuccessful. Since abdominal pain had been continued, an emergency surgery was perfo

[Ascending Colon Cancer with Duodenal Invasion Treated with Preoperative Chemotherapy and Partial Duodenectomy].

An 81-year-old woman with right lower abdominal pain was referred to our hospital. She was diagnosed as ascending colon cancer with duodenal invasion by CT and colonoscopy. Eight courses of FOLFOX+Bev, 3 courses of 5-FU/LV+Bev and 3 courses of IRI+P-mab were performed, tumor was reduced. Right hemicolectomy and partial duodenectomy were performed. Histopathological findings showed ypTis, N0, M0, ypStage 0, Grade 2. One year after surgery, the patient was alive without recurrence. This result suggests that preoperative chemotherapy may be an option for locally advanced colon cancer with other o

Hereditary angioedema presented as isolated ascending and transverse colon swelling mimicking acute abdomen.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by C1-INH gene mutations, leading to recurrent angioedema episodes affecting various body parts, including the gastrointestinal tract. This case report describes a 24-year-old female presenting with symptoms mimicking an acute abdomen, characterized by severe abdominal cramps, anorexia, and diarrhea, with a significant past medical history of angioedema flares and emergency intubation for asphyxiation at age 11. Despite initial treatment with antihistamines showing no improvement, her symptoms spontaneously resolv

[A Case of Ascending Colon Cancer Metastasis to Right External Iliac Lymph Nodes].

We report a rare case of postoperative ascending colon cancer metastasis to the right external iliac lymph nodes. A 57- year-old woman underwent a laparoscopic right colectomy and D3 lymph node dissection. Pathological findings indicated a Stage Ⅲb, pT4aN1bM0 cancer. Because side effects were observed on adjuvant chemotherapy with FOLFOX, she was switched to S-1 administration every other week. Sixteen months postoperatively, right inguinal pain and elevated CEA values were noted. CT revealed two swollen right external iliac nodes with high FDG uptake on PET-CT. With the diagnosis of lymph nod

Primary angiosarcoma of the ascending colon diagnosed after the discovery of intraoral tumor.

Here, we report a case of primary angiosarcoma of the ascending colon diagnosed after the discovery of an oral tumor. An 86-year-old woman presented to our hospital with severe anemia. Although she did not report any oral symptoms, an intraoral mass 15 mm in size with ulceration was observed. Since colonic tumors and osteolytic tumors in the maxilla and sacra were also identified by fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET), colonoscopy was performed. A semi-peripheral tumor with ulceration from the cecum to the ascending colon was detected. Biopsies of the oral cavity and co
