The effect of exercise-induced muscle fatigue on gait parameters among older adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced fatigue is a common consequence of physical activities. Particularly in older adults, it can affect gait performance. Due to a wide variety in fatiguing protocols and gait parameters used in experimental settings, pooled effects are not yet clear. Furthermore, specific elements of fatiguing protocols (i.e., intensity, duration, and type of activity) might lead to different changes in gait parameters. We aimed to systematically quantify to what extent exercise-induced fatigue alters gait in community-dwelling older adults, and whether specific elements of fatiguing

Geriatric Elements and Oral Anticoagulant Prescribing in Older Atrial Fibrillation Patients: SAGE-AF.

OBJECTIVES: Oral anticoagulants are the cornerstone of stroke prevention in high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Geriatric elements, such as cognitive impairment and frailty, commonly occur in these patients and are often cited as reasons for not prescribing oral anticoagulants. We sought to systematically assess geriatric impairments in patients with AF and determine whether they were associated with oral anticoagulant prescribing. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the ongoing Systematic Assessment of Geriatric Elements in Atrial Fibrillation (SAGE-AF) prosp

Mineralocorticoid Receptor-Associated Mechanisms in Diabetic Kidney Disease and Clinical Significance of Mineralocorticoid Receptor Antagonists.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a common disorder with multiple serious clinical implications, including an increased risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), cardiovascular complications, heart failure, onset or worsening of hypertension, and premature death. Patients with DKD frequently require dialysis or kidney transplantation to manage their ESKD. SUMMARY: Upregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is an important contributor to kidney disease progression, as highlighted by the results of trials evaluating angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensi

Evidence of humic acid-aluminium‑silicon complexes under controlled conditions.

The chemistry of silicon (Si), the second most abundant element in soil after oxygen, is not yet fully understood in the soil-water-plant continuum. Although Si is widely accepted as an element that has little or no interaction with natural organic matter, some data seems to show the opposite. To identify a potential interaction between natural organic matter and Si, batch experiments were achieved at various pH and Si concentrations, involving also Al3+ as a common ion in soil and using humic acid (HA) as a typical model for natural organic matter. Several complementary techniques were used t

Structural properties and dynamic behavior of nonfibrillar oligomers formed by PrP(106-126).

The formation of nonfibrillar oligomers has been proposed as a common element of the aggregation pathway of proteins and peptides associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. While fibrillar structures have long been considered indicators of diseases linked with the accumulation of amyloid plaques, it has more recently been proposed that amyloid oligomers are in fact the cytotoxic form. Here we describe the local structure and dynamics of stable oligomers formed by a peptide comprising residues 106-126 of the human prion protein (PrP). Structura

Blue eye color in humans may be caused by a perfectly associated founder mutation in a regulatory element located within the HERC2 gene inhibiting OCA2 expression.

The human eye color is a quantitative trait displaying multifactorial inheritance. Several studies have shown that the OCA2 locus is the major contributor to the human eye color variation. By linkage analysis of a large Danish family, we finemapped the blue eye color locus to a 166 Kbp region within the HERC2 gene. By association analyses, we identified two SNPs within this region that were perfectly associated with the blue and brown eye colors: rs12913832 and rs1129038. Of these, rs12913832 is located 21.152 bp upstream from the OCA2 promoter in a highly conserved sequence in intron 86 of HE

The flavivirus 3'-noncoding region: extensive size heterogeneity independent of evolutionary relationships among strains of tick-borne encephalitis virus.

The sequences of the 3'-noncoding regions (NCR) of 12 strains of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus were analyzed and found to vary in length from 350 to approximately 750 nucleotides. The size heterogeneity is restricted to a variable region following the stop codon, whereas the most 3'-terminal 350 nucleotides form a highly conserved core element containing several potentially important sequence motifs and secondary structure elements. A homoadenosine tract previously thought to form the 3'-terminus of some TBE virus strains was now shown to be an internal part of the variable region of cer

Comprehensive genomic characterization of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from neonates: multiple center insights into virulence, resistance, and transmission dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC), which can cause severe long-term sequelae by systemic infections, is gradually becoming the primary pathogen threatening neonatal health. The lack of large-scale genomic epidemiological investigation hinders further understanding of neonatal ExPEC. We conducted this nationwide multicenter study to support further strategies for improving neonatal ExPEC management. METHODS: The neonatal ExPEC strains and clinical information, including antimicrobial resistance phenotype, were collected from nine centers within 7 province

Leveraging machine learning to personalize depression treatment: A pre-registered study of 828 adults randomized to a digital single-session intervention or waitlist.

Some digital single-session interventions (SSI) for depression appear effective, at least in youth, but not everyone benefits. The present study uses machine learning methods to develop a treatment matching algorithm for a digital SSI, the Common Elements Toolbox (COMET), versus a waitlist control. 828 adults with a current or past mental health problem were randomized to COMET or a waitlist control. Elastic net regularization models with 10-fold cross-validation were used to develop a Personalized Advantage Index (PAI) indicating the relative benefit of receiving COMET over the waitlist in 2-

Mandatory reporting on child abuse and neglect - many approaches, same name: Conceptualizing and understanding the mandatory reporting legislation.

Mandatory Reporting (MR) is a range of regulations that, in its simplest form, mandate the reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect to state authorities and is widely implemented globally. Despite the common usage of the term MR, it masks significant divergences in goals and operational definitions. This paper discusses data from previous studies and official records to understand the various elements used and how responsibilities for protecting children are conceptualized. The paper highlights three main areas of focus for the MR regulations: children's focus (children's rights, child p

Optimizing Nervous System-Specific Gene Targeting with Cre Driver Lines: Prevalence of Germline Recombination and Influencing Factors.

The Cre-loxP system is invaluable for spatial and temporal control of gene knockout, knockin, and reporter expression in the mouse nervous system. However, we report varying probabilities of unexpected germline recombination in distinct Cre driver lines designed for nervous system-specific recombination. Selective maternal or paternal germline recombination is showcased with sample Cre lines. Collated data reveal germline recombination in over half of 64 commonly used Cre driver lines, in most cases with a parental sex bias related to Cre expression in sperm or oocytes. Slight differences amon

The global distribution and spread of the mobilized colistin resistance gene mcr-1.

Colistin represents one of the few available drugs for treating infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. As such, the recent plasmid-mediated spread of the colistin resistance gene mcr-1 poses a significant public health threat, requiring global monitoring and surveillance. Here, we characterize the global distribution of mcr-1 using a data set of 457 mcr-1-positive sequenced isolates. We find mcr-1 in various plasmid types but identify an immediate background common to all mcr-1 sequences. Our analyses establish that all mcr-1 elements in circulation descend from the same

Review of attentional bias modification: a brain-directed treatment for eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological treatments for eating disorders (ED) rely on mastery of effortful attentional control to divert attention from anxiety provoking thoughts. This paper assesses the potential suitability of attentional bias modification treatment (ABMT) for EDs as a way to target early automatic attentional processes and implicitly retune threat perception that happens outside of conscious control. METHOD: We review data on anxiety in EDs, the neurobiological and behavioural relationship between anxiety disorders and EDs, attentional biases (AB) in EDs and the use of ABMT. RESULTS: Co-

Bilateral breast cancer in a male patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. A case report.

Male breast cancer accounts for about 1% of all breast cancers and bilateral breast cancer in men is therefore a rare event. Data in literature indicate that approximately 20% of these tumours are due to a probable alteration in the oestrogen metabolism. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on the other hand, is a much more frequent tumour and in 70-80% of cases is associated with cirrhosis. The proven concomitance of cirrhosis and gynecomastia in HCC or previous intake of oestrogen in breast cancer, would indicate possible involvement of the hormonal metabolism in the appearance of the two neoplast

Targeting oxidative stress and metal imbalance in cerebral ischemia: the neuroprotective role of sodium valproate.

In brain ischaemia (BI), the oxidative and ionic stresses lead slowly but definitely to the injury of neurones. The present investigation is looking to check the status of certain oxidative stress markers and trace elements which are induced in response to brain ischaemia with sodium valproate (VPA), a neuroprotective agent, in the rats exposed to the model of BI. Although VPA is already used for clinical purposes, it deserves careful examination of the potentially detrimental effects of VPA in conditions of ischaemia closely linked to hepatotoxicity and thrombocytopenia. Forty rats were rando
