INTRODUCTION: Individual- and neighborhood-level social determinants of health (SDOH) have been assessed separately in pregnancy, but their relationship to one another remains uncertain. We investigated the intersectionality of three neighborhood-level SDOH measures with three individual-level SDOH measures. This was done to examine the concomitant experiences of multiple SDOH in pregnancy. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-To-Be. We assessed three neighborhood-level SDOH measures using geocoded participant home addresses i

Data were obtained from the HIV Sentinel Surveillance Plus Behavioral Surveys (HSS+) conducted from 2015 to 2020 in six provinces. Proportions of HIV-positive MSM who knew their HIV status, received antiretroviral therapy (ART), and achieved viral suppression were estimated. Temporal trends were analyze

Association between socioeconomic and motherhood characteristics with receiving community-based treatment services among justice-involved young female drug users: a retrospective cohort study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Drug-involved individuals who contact treatment services in Taiwan are mostly driven by criminal justice systems either as an alternative or adjunct to criminal sanctions for a drug offence. With a focus on justice-involved young female drug users, the present study examines the extent to which socioeconomic and motherhood characteristics are associated with receiving deferred prosecution, a scheme diverting drug offenders to community-based addiction treatment. METHODS: We identified a cohort of 5869 women under the age of 30 arrested for using Schedule II drugs (primarily amphet

The Making of the Mental Health System in South Korea, 1960s-1980s: The Rise of Institutionalization and the Unfulfilled Promise of Community Mental Health.

In recent years, growing attention to the social integration of persons with psychosocial disabilities into their local communities has intensified calls to shift Korea's hospital-centered mental health system toward a community-based model. Historically, the Korean mental health system has often been framed through the narrative of a "delayed transition," which suggests that the country is belatedly undergoing the deinstitutionalization experienced in Western societies during the 1960s and 1970s. However, this linear account fails to explain a crucial divergence: during the very decades when

Hope, hype, and high costs: Navigating glucagon-like Peptide-1 based therapy initiation among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)-based therapies have emerged as a major option for weight management, with prescribing among young adults increasing nearly sixfold between 2020 and 2023 in the United States. Despite this growth, little is known about how young adults decide to initiate GLP-1 therapy, navigate access, and manage treatment costs. This study examined individual, social, financial, and structural influences shaping GLP-1 initiation for weight management among young adults. METHODS: This was a qualitative interview study that employed a semi-structured interview design

Comprehensive Needs Among Justice-Involved People With Substance Use History With or at Risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Justice-involved individuals have many cooccurring socioeconomic and medical needs. Here, we characterize the needs of justice-involved individuals with substance use history at risk for or living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Texas (TX) and Connecticut (CT). All participants are part of a larger trial linking justice-involved people to community-based substance use and HIV services. Comprehensive baseline needs were assessed; frequencies of needs were quantified and compared using chi-square analysis. Participants (N = 356) reported greater socioeconomic than medical needs in bot

Cross-sectional survey of the incidence, mortality and socioeconomic burden of snakebite envenoming in India.

Snakebite, a neglected tropical disease is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in India, despite which reliable nationwide data are limited. To address this, we carried out a survey in 25 districts across 11 states, covering a 60 million population. The community-based study was led by frontline health workers who tracked cases and deaths, while field teams collected details on the bite, the type of snake, treatment received, and costs. The impact of social determinants of health on outcomes of brexucabtagene autoleucel in adults with relapsed/refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Brexucabtagene autoleucel (brexu-cel) is a chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR T) cell therapy approved for adults with relapsed or refractory (R/R) B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). We studied the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on outcomes of adults with B-ALL receiving brexu-cel. This retrospective analysis included adults (≥18 years) with R/R B-ALL treated with brexu-cel between 2021 and 2023. Cox proportional hazards models evaluated the association of race, ethnicity, and SDoH with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). 189 patients received bre

Care for Vulnerable Populations with Chronic Liver Disease: A Safety-Net Perspective.

Safety-net hospitals (SNHs) and facilities are the cornerstone of healthcare services for the medically underserved. The burden of chronic liver disease-including end-stage manifestations of cirrhosis and liver cancer-is high and rising among populations living in poverty who primarily seek and receive care in safety-net settings. For many reasons related to social determinants of health, these individuals often present with delayed diagnoses and disease presentations, resulting in higher liver-related mortality. With recent state-based policy changes such as Medicaid expansion that impact acc
