Fresh sera from patients with active polymyalgia rheumatica and/or giant cell arteritis are fixing the complement components C4 and C3 to structures of the medulla of rat kidney tissue as demonstrated by the indirect immunofluorescent technique. This PMR-associated reaction is also a useful tool in monitoring disease activity, as it becomes negative under effective treatment with steroids.

Primary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis is usually a self-limited disease. It is characterized by fever, nonproductive cough and chest pain. Manifestations of hypersensitivity, such as skin lesions and polyserositis, are often present. Persistence of symptoms beyond eight weeks, continuously positive sputum cultures or negative skin tests with high serum complement-fixation titers for coccidiodomycosis suggest local progression or hematogenous spread. These situations are indications for antifungal therapy.

The assay antigen produced in cell cultures infected with Chlamydia psittaci was Formalin-fixed to microplates. A complement-fixing antigen specific for scrub typhus occurs in the body fluids and tissues of infected mice, white rats, and cotton rats. The specific serological substance is demonstrable only in those animals which develop a rapidly fatal disease after an incubation period of a few days. The diagnosis of human fascioliasis was established in an 11 year old boy with prolonged fever by complement fixation and ELISA tests. Good clinical response followed the treatment with emetine. Four other family members were also affected with the disease and their treatment was equally effective.
