Identification of trichotillomania cue profiles.

To explore the usefulness of emotional and environmental cues in distinguishing different patterns and potential subtypes of hair pulling in … obsessive compulsive disorder, other anxiety disorders, current and past depression, and obsessive compulsive personality disorder. High SA scores were related to a history of major depression only. Weighted scores on these components may be useful in further elaborating the phenomenology of trichotillomania and designing appropriate treatment interventions.

Pathological narcissism and relationship obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCD) symptoms: Exploring the role of vulnerable narcissism.

OBJECTIVE: Relationship obsessive-compulsive disorder (ROCD) symptoms, which include obsessive preoccupation, doubts, and compulsive behaviors focusing on the suitability of the relationship and/or partner, have been receiving increasing clinical, theoretical, and empirical attention. This clinical variant of OCD is associated with significant functional, personal, and dyadic consequences. ROCD symptoms have also been linked to several cognitive vulnerability factors, such as maladaptive relationship catastrophization. However, little is known about the connection between ROCD symptoms and spe

The history, epidemiology, and differential diagnosis of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder has only recently garnered recognition as a unique anxiety disorder. Although social anxiety disorder is distinguishable from other psychiatric disorders, there are several areas in which this distinction is not straightforward. Furthermore, social anxiety disorder is associated with considerable comorbidity with other disorders, which may render differential diagnosis a challenging endeavor. This article will review those disorders that must be differentiated from social anxiety disorder, including major depression, panic disorder with agoraphobia, generalized anxiety

The relationships between obsessional personality, obsessions in depression, and symptoms of depression.

The relationships between obsessional personality, obsessions in depression, and symptoms of depression were investigated by means of a retrospective study of case notes and item sheets. One hundred and sixty-eight cases of depression, aged 20 to 29 years, were rated for obsessional personality as defined by Ingram (1961). The presence of previous obsessions, of obsessions in depression and of eight symptoms of depression was assessed from the item sheets. Obsessional personality was found to be significantly associated only with a decreased frequency of objective apathy, although it seemed to

Clinical characteristics of probands with obsessive-compulsive disorder from simplex and multiplex families.

Genetic and non-genetic factors contribute to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), with strong evidence of familial clustering. Genomic studies in psychiatry have used the concepts of families that are "simplex" (one affected) versus "multiplex" (multiple affected). Our study compares demographic and clinical data from OCD probands in simplex and multiplex families to uncover potential differences. We analyzed 994 OCD probands (501 multiplex, 493 simplex) from the Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (C-TOC). Clinicians administered the Structured Clinical I

Proposed diagnostic criteria for compulsive buying-shopping disorder: A Delphi expert consensus study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Consensus in acknowledging compulsive buying-shopping disorder (CBSD) as a distinct diagnosis has been lacking. Before research in this area can be advanced, it is necessary to establish diagnostic criteria in order to facilitate field trials. METHODS: The study consisted of the following phases: (1) operationalization of a broad range of potential diagnostic criteria for CBSD, (2) two iterative rounds of data collection using the Delphi method, where consensus of potential diagnostic criteria for CBSD was reached by an international expert panel, and (3) interpretation o

What Lies Beyond Neuroticism? An Examination of the Unique Contributions of Social-Cognitive Vulnerabilities to Internalizing Disorders.

Extensive research has identified various social-cognitive vulnerabilities for internalizing disorders. However, few studies have assessed multiple disorders simultaneously, so it is unclear whether these vulnerabilities are transdiagnostic or specific risk factors. Their unique associations with disorders are also uncertain, given that they correlate strongly with neuroticism and one other. Psychiatric outpatients completed self-report and interview measures of six disorders (depression, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive d

From Treatment Response to Recovery: A Realistic Goal in OCD.

Despite longitudinal studies reporting symptomatic remission rates ranging from 32% to 70%, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is considered a persistent and very disabling disorder. However, these studies suggest that recovery can be a realistic goal for a subgroup of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder population and that a clear definition of recovery is timely in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The aim of this paper is to discuss the dimensions of and propose an operational definition of recovery in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Considering the impact generated by the definition of recovery for o

Diazepam use during pregnancy: a review of the literature.

Antianxiety medications such as benzodiazepines (BZDs) are frequently and appropriately used to ameliorate the anxiety symptoms of depression, dysthymic disorder, panic disorder, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, eating disorder, and many personality disorders. Pregnancy may be accompanied by anxiety necessitating therapeutic intervention by anxiolytic drugs like BZD. Keeping in view the potential risks of teratogenicity and direct neonatal toxicity, BZDs with established safety records should be used, while avoiding exposure in the first trimester, espe

[Bipolar disorders and psychiatric comorbidity].

Comorbidity is very frequent in bipolar disorders. The most frequently psychiatric disorders associated with bipolar disorders are substance use disorders (particularly alcohol abuse) and anxiety disorders. Obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulse control disorders, personality disorders and eating disorders co-occur also with bipolar disorder. Comorbidity complicates the diagnosis and the treatment of bipolar disorder and worsen the prognosis. For every bipolar patient, it is necessary to search for a comorbid psychiatric disorder, and vice-versa. There is a noticeable paucity of controlled stu

Self-stigma, severity of psychopatology, dissociation, parental style and comorbid personality disorder in patient with neurotic spectrum disorders Part 1: Relationships between self-stigma and clinical, psychosocial and demograph.

OBJECTIVES: Self-stigma represents a process of accepting negative social prejudices with a consequent negative impact on many areas of the patient's life (self-concept, social and work functioning, relationships, cooperation in treatment, quality of life, willingness to strive for something). The study was aimed to examine the level of self-stigma and other significant variables potentially related to self-stigma (personality characteristics, childhood traumatisation, anxiety, depression, personality disorder, dissociation, parental styles, attachment). [Psychiatric disorders in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy].

Mild personality problems have been described in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), but clinical practice shows that JME can be diagnosed in patients with more or less severe psychiatric disorders (PD). The presence in JME patients of personality disorders has been described repeatedly, but never quantified. We thus decided to evaluate, using the DSM IV, the current prevalence and types of PD in a large series of consecutive, newly referred patients with JME. Among 170 consecutive JME cases referred to two departments of epileptology (Marseilles and Nice) between 1981 and 1998 (6

Validation of MMPI-2-RF Personality Disorder Spectra scales in a psychiatric sample.

The diagnostic operationalization of personality disorders is at the crossroads. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5), includes 2 separate systems for the diagnosis of personality disorders (PDs)-1 that is purely categorical (Section II) and 1 that is primarily dimensional (Section III). The International Classification of Diseases (11th ed.) will use a dimensional approach for the diagnosis of PDs. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) PD Spectra scales were developed as measures of both the traditional and the al

Suicidality in patients with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs): A meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Previous meta-analyses showed that OCD is associated with a substantial risk of suicidal behaviours. Conclusive rates of suicidal ideation (current and lifetime) and suicide attempts based on pooled prevalence rates have not so far been calculated using meta-analysis for the other DSM-5 Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRDs). OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis aims to separately calculate the pooled prevalence rates of lifetime suicide attempts and current or lifetime suicidal ideation in BDD, Hoarding Disorder (HD), Skin Picking Disorder (SPD) and Trichotillomania (TTM)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (ptsd) and co-morbidity.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) very often occurs accompanied with other psychiatric disorders such as: Alcohol and Drug abuse, Personality Disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia etc. Sometimes it might be a problem for clinicians to differ PTSD symptoms from symptoms of coexisting psychic disorders. The aim of this study was to present the most common PTSD coexisting psycho-disorders. This research was conducted during the period from April 1998 to October 1999. Participants were divided in two groups each containing 30 examinees. The first group
