Clinical outcomes following spinal fusion using an intraoperative computed tomographic 3D imaging system.

OBJECTIVE Improvements in imaging technology have steadily advanced surgical approaches. Within the field of spine surgery, assistance from the O-arm Multidimensional Surgical Imaging System has been established to yield superior accuracy of pedicle screw insertion compared with freehand and fluoroscopic approaches. Despite this evidence, no studies have investigated the clinical relevance associated with increased accuracy. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes following thoracolumbar spinal fusion associated with O-arm-assisted navigation. The auth

Use of a frameless computed tomography-guided stereotactic biopsy system for nasal biopsy in five dogs.

CASE DESCRIPTION: 5 dogs (median age, 9 years; median body weight, 31 kg [68.2 lb]) with undefined nasal masses were examined after undergoing CT of the head and nasal biopsy via a rostral rhinoscopic or unaided (blind) approach because histologic results for collected biopsy specimens (inflammatory, necrotic, or hemorrhagic disease) suggested the specimens were nonrepresentative of the underlying disease process identified via CT (aggressive or malignant disease). CLINICAL FINDINGS: Clinical signs at the time dogs were evaluated included open-mouth breathing, sneezing, or unilateral epistaxi

Preliminary development of a workstation for craniomaxillofacial surgical procedures: introducing a computer-assisted planning and execution system.

INTRODUCTION: Facial transplantation represents one of the most complicated scenarios in craniofacial surgery because of skeletal, aesthetic, and dental discrepancies between donor and recipient. However, standard off-the-shelf vendor computer-assisted surgery systems may not provide custom features to mitigate the increased complexity of this particular procedure. We propose to develop a computer-assisted surgery solution customized for preoperative planning, intraoperative navigation including cutting guides, and dynamic, instantaneous feedback of cephalometric measurements/angles as needed

Radiological outcome and intraoperative evaluation of a computer-navigation system for femoral nailing: a retrospective cohort study.

AIM: Intraoperative determinations of femoral antetorsion and leg length during fixation of femoral shaft fractures present a challenge. In femoral shaft fracture fixations, a computer-navigation system has shown promise in determining antetorsion and leg length discrepancies. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine whether the use of computer navigation during femoral nailing procedures reduced postoperative femoral malrotation and leg length discrepancy, as well as the number of revision cases. We also sought to determine whether radiation exposure time was reduced when computer n

Evaluation of computer-aided detection of lesions in mammograms obtained with a digital phase-contrast mammography system.

A computer-aided detection (CAD) system was evaluated for its ability to detect microcalcifications and masses on images obtained with a digital phase-contrast mammography (PCM) system, a system characterised by the sharp images provided by phase contrast and by the high resolution of 25-μm-pixel mammograms. Fifty abnormal and 50 normal mammograms were collected from about 3,500 mammograms and printed on film for reading on a light box. Seven qualified radiologists participated in an observer study based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The average of the areas under ROC cu

The use of the clinical scoring system by Alvarado in the decision to perform computed tomography for acute appendicitis in the ED.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Appendicitis is part of the differential of an acute abdomen and can be a difficult diagnosis to make. Strategies to suggest which patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) should undergo computed tomography (CT) scan to confirm appendicitis have not been addressed. We develop guidelines for CT scanning based on Alvarado clinical scores for patients with suspected and confirmed cases of appendicitis. METHODS: A retrospective review of 150 charts of patients aged 7 and older who presented with abdominal pain to the ED of a 392-bed acute care facility over a 6-month

An integrated computer supported acquisition, handling, and characterization system for pigmented skin lesions in dermatological images.

This paper describes an integrated prototype computer-based system for the characterization of skin digital images. The first stage includes an image acquisition arrangement designed for capturing skin images, under reproducible conditions. The system processes the captured images and performs unsupervised image segmentation and image registration utilizing an efficient algorithm based on the log-polar transform of the images' Fourier spectrum. Border- and color-based features, extracted from the digital images of skin lesions, were used to construct a classification module for the recognition

Computational analysis of the three-dimensional hemodynamics of the blood sac in the twin-pulse life-support system.

Blood flow in the twin-pulse life-support system (T-PLS) pulsatile blood pump was simulated using a three-dimensional rigid body-fluid-solid interaction model. This model can delineate the blood flow in the T-PLS resulting from operation of a moving actuator. The numerical method used in this study was a commercial finite element package called ADINA. We used a contact and fluid-solid interaction model to compute the blood hemodynamics in the sac. Blood flow is generated by the motion of the actuator, which strongly interacts with the solid material surrounding the blood. To obtain basic bioen

Cranial computed tomography in the assessment of neurological complications in critically ill patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

The cranial computed tomography findings in 22 critically ill patients with systemic lupus erythematosus in the intensive care unit were reviewed to document the spectrum of pathology encountered and to assess the contribution of cranial computed tomography to the diagnosis and management of such patients, many of whom had severe multisystem disease. Thirty-one scans were performed in 22 patients, all of which were abnormal. Premature cerebral atrophy was identified in fifteen patients (68%), cerebral infarction in five (23%), intracranial haemorrhage and cerebral oedema in four each (18%), an

A low cost computer aided design (CAD) system for 3D-reconstruction from serial sections.

This paper describes an approach to computer-assisted 3D-reconstruction of neuronal specimens based on a low cost yet powerful software package for a personal computer (Atari ST). It provides an easy to handle (mouse driven) object editor to create 3D models of medium complexity (15,000 vertices) from sections or from scratch. The models may be displayed in various modes including stereo viewing and complex animation sequences.

[Use of computer-assisted Doppler sonography and rheography in acral vascular diagnosis in progressive systemic sclerosis].

For the quantitative characterization of the blood flow of patients with progressive systemic sclerosis a combined computer-assisted Doppler sonographic as well as rheographic measuring place was established. An aimed examination of the peripheral situation of the blood supply was performed in 15 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis in comparison to a control group of patients with healthy vessels. The demonstration of the corresponding parameters of time and form of the curves resulted in significant differences for the two examination groups, particularly of the pulsation index (PI)

Magnetic resonance and computed tomographic imaging in the evaluation of acute neuropsychiatric disease in systemic lupus erythematosus.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT) are useful for the evaluation of central nervous system (CNS) lupus. This report describes the use of cranial MR and CT in 21 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with acute neuropsychiatric symptoms manifested by headache, seizures, focal neurological deficits, psychosis, or organic brain syndrome. Computed tomography was found to be insensitive and detected only diffuse atrophy (two cases), cerebral infarct (one case), and intracerebral haemorrhage (one case) in the 21 patients. Cranial MR images obtained with a General

Central nervous system complications in childhood leukemia. Correlation between clinical and computed tomographic findings.

We used cranial computed tomography (CT) to evaluate 51 leukemic patients with or without central nervous system (CNS) symptoms. Among 17 symptomatic patients, nine had gross abnormalities on CT scans; leukemic infiltrations, infections (CNS aspergillosis), hemorrhages, and therapy-related complications were all evident. One with a leukemic infiltration showed a periventricular low density on the CT scans. The differential diagnosis of CT findings and the correlation between clinical and CT findings is described. The significance of a low-density area observed in an asymptomatic patient on lon

[Computed tomographic volumetry of the pneumatic system of the ear. Comparison of normal subjects and patients with ear diseases].

The volume of the pneumatised portion of the ear was determined by computed tomography in 235 patients. Amongst the 470 ears examined, 320 had no disease in the ear, nose or throat. Normal pneumatisation of the ear can be quantified by CT and strict correlation has been demonstrated between the air content and age from ten to 17 years. Chronic inflammatory processes of the middle ear occurring during childhood interfere with pneumatisation on one or both sides. The most severe failure of pneumatisation occurs with congenital abnormalities of the ear, most cases never showing significant pneuma

Electroencephalography-Based Brain-Computer Interface System Using Tongue Movement Imagery for Wheelchair Control.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are essential in assistive technologies to restore mobility in individuals with motor impairments. Although electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-controlled wheelchairs have been extensively studied, most tongue-controlled systems rely on physical tongue movements, intraoral devices, or limited offline commands, which reduces the usability and comfort. This study introduces an EEG-based tongue motor imagery (MI) BCI for intuitive and entirely mental wheelchair control. By leveraging preserved motor function and the cortical representation of the tongue, the

Nanocellulose-based drug delivery systems: experimental findings and computational insights with emphasis on cellulose nanofibers.

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are emerging as promising candidate materials for drug delivery systems due to their biocompatibility, large surface area, and structural versatility. Their capacity to encapsulate a variety of therapeutic compounds enables controlled and targeted release, although performance depends on formulation and surface characteristics. This structured narrative review article focuses on recent experimental and computational research on CNFs as drug carriers and their roles in small molecule loading, sustained release, and targeting strategies. In addition to CNF-based syste

Surrogate modeling based on computational fluid dynamics for predicting the capsizing moment in a coupled shiplift system.

Accurate prediction of the capsizing moment in shiplift systems remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the strong coupled interactions among the chamber, water body, and ship. Conventional three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations are associated with high computational costs, while commonly used two-dimensional (2D) simplified models neglect ship effects, potentially leading to underestimation of the actual capsizing moment. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-informed surrogate model is developed for one-step-ahead prediction of capsizing moment in a coupled cham

Engineering the MmeFz2-ωRNA system for efficient genome editing through an integrated computational-experimental framework.

Eukaryotic Fanzor proteins are compact, programmable RNA-guided nucleases with substantial potential for genome editing, although their efficiency in mammalian cells remains suboptimal. Here, we present a combinatorial engineering strategy to optimize a representative Fanzor system, MmeFz2-ωRNA. AlphaFold3-powered rational redesign produced a minimized ωRNA scaffold that is 30% smaller while maintaining up to 82.2% efficiency. Synergistic structure-guided and AI-augmented protein engineering generated two variants, enMmeFz2 and evoMmeFz2, which exhibited an average ~32-fold increase in activit
