The Confrustion Constellation: A New Way of Looking at Confusion and Frustration.

There has been considerable research on confusion and frustration that has treated them as two unitary constructs, distinct from each other. In this article, we argue that there is instead a constellation of different types of confusion and frustration, with different antecedents, manifestations, and impacts, and that the commonalities between many types of confusion and frustration justify thinking of them as part of the same constellation of affect, distinct from other prominent affective categories. We discuss how these types of affect have been considered historically and in key models. We…

A case study of hypnosis for tongue thrusting: confusion of tongues.

In this case study, the author reviews the benefits of hypnosis for a middle-aged female suffering from an unwanted habit of rubbing her tongue against her teeth, also known as tongue thrusting. At the time of the initial consultation, she had already undergone several months of physical therapy for a lifetime habit of tongue thrusting. During the consultation, she expressed complaints of pain and chronic irritation, along with feelings of distraction and hopelessness regarding treatment. Treatment included one session after initial consultation and hypnotizability testing, at which time patie

Effused and Confused: A Case of Severe Adenovirus Pneumonia in a Teen.

Adenovirus is a common pathogen responsible for respiratory infections, including pneumonia, predominantly in pediatric populations but also in immunocompromised adults. This case report details an 18-year-old immunocompetent male presenting with severe lobar pneumonia and pleural effusion, initially suggesting a bacterial origin. Despite antibiotic treatment, the patient's symptoms persisted, prompting further investigation. The diagnostic approach included polymerase chain reaction testing on upper-airway specimens, pleural effusion, and bronchoalveolar lavage, which identified adenovirus as

Scientific writing in physiology: confused/misused terms and phrases.

One aspect of effective scientific writing in physiology is the ability to select the correct words or short phrases to use when developing your narratives. This task is made difficult because many commonly used terms have seemingly viable alternatives, leading to confusion, uncertainty, and possible misuse of those words and phrases. In this perspective, we attempt to provide general guidance when selecting between or among options for commonly confused and misused terms in scientific writing. We have organized inaccurate, confusing, commonly misused, and misleading words and phrases into sep…

Tuberculosis or Gallbladder carcinoma? A confusing presentation in an endemic region.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gallbladder tuberculosis (GT) is an extremely rare clinical entity that represents only 1 % of abdominal tuberculosis cases. Preoperatively, most patients are misdiagnosed as chronic cholecystitis or gallbladder malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 43-year-old patient, whose clinic, imaging and biology were in favor of Gallbladder carcinoma. DISCUSSION: The clinical presentation of GT is varied and nonspecific, making the preoperative diagnosis of GT difficult; it may mimic acute cholecystitis to frank malignancy as seen in our case. Preoperativ

If You're Not Confused, You're Not Paying Attention: Ochrobactrum Is Not Brucella.

Bacteria of the genus Brucella are facultative intracellular parasites that cause brucellosis, a severe animal and human disease. Recently, a group of taxonomists merged the brucellae with the primarily free-living, phylogenetically related Ochrobactrum spp. in the genus Brucella. This change, founded only on global genomic analysis and the fortuitous isolation of some opportunistic Ochrobactrum spp. from medically compromised patients, has been automatically included in culture collections and databases. We argue that clinical and environmental microbiologists should not accept this nomenclat

[Naevus unius lateris: a confusing entity (a case report)].

Naevus unius lateris is a rare congenital hamartoma, originating from the ectoderm. It is considered as a verruquous variant of the epidermal naevus. Given its extensive unilateral distribution, it is frequently associated with neurological, musculoskeletal, auditory and visual abnormalities. We here report the case of a 9-year-old child with nevus unius lateris associated with neurological and eye abnormalities.

Pulmonary mucoepidermoid lung carcinoma in pediatric confused with asthma.

Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC) is an extremely rare tumor of the respiratory system. The clinical presentation of PMEC is variable and nonspecific, including cough, hemoptysis, and wheezing, and may mimic other symptoms of pneumonia or asthma. Here, we present a case of PMEC in a 12-year-old male who was diagnosed with and treated for asthma for 2 years. The patient presented with symptoms of respiratory failure that did not respond to steroids or bronchodilator medications. Chest computed tomography (CT) scans revealed an endotracheal tumor. The patient underwent complete tumor res

Darier Nests or Pautrier microabscesses: highlighting the confusion of a decade.

Lucien Marie Pautrier was a skilled dermatologist whose work led to the creation of numerous manuscripts within the field of dermatology. His name, though, most often lends itself to a histopathological finding that was not his own discovery. For years, the origin of the term "pautrier microabscess" was thought to be the result of a misattribution by Louis H. Winer at the 66th annual meeting of the American Dermatological Association in 1946. However, a recently reported citing of the term in a 1932 article has led to speculation that the term could, in fact, have been first coined at a meetin

Sticking to the script: A curious case of confusion in an ESRD patient.

A 60-year-old male Dialysis patient presented with altered mental status and Hypertensive Urgency. He had a significant lesion noted on his glans penis. He was treated for infection and hypertension with expectant management, without significant improvement in his mental acuity. Laboratory and radiologic workup were unrevealing for the etiology. Upon detailed review it was noted he had recently been given Acyclovir for a presumed Herpes Simplex Virus infection. He had been prescribed what is considered correct dosing for an ESRD patient. An Acyclovir level was obtained and urgent Dialysis was

Hormonal contraception and HIV: the methods have confused the message.

OBJECTIVE: To examine different scenarios through which confounding by condom use may lead to inaccurate conclusions about the effect of hormonal contraception on HIV acquisition in women. DESIGN AND METHODS: Scenario analyses were conducted to evaluate the impact of coarse adjustment for condom use and condom misreporting on adjusted relative risk estimates for HIV acquisition in injectable hormonal contraception (IHC) users vs. nonusers. RESULTS: Analyses crudely accounting for condom use through a binary variable result in biased hormonal contraception-related risk estimates if condoms ar

The role of fearless dominance in psychopathy: confusions, controversies, and clarifications.

Based on their 2011 meta-analysis of the correlates of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI), Miller and Lynam (An examination of the Psychopathic Personality Inventory's nomological network: A meta-analytic review, Personality Disorders: Theory, Research, and Treatment, 3, 305-326) conclude that its Fearless Dominance (PPI-FD) higher-order dimension exhibits weak construct validity, leading them to question the relevance of boldness to the conceptualization and assessment of psychopathy. We examine their assertions in light of the clinical, conceptual, and empirical literatures on psyc

Putrefaction and wound dehiscence: a potentially confusing postmortem phenomenon.

The decomposed body of a 49-year-old man was found at his home address. At autopsy, 3 incised wounds of the lower abdomen and groins were identified, raising the possibility of some form of inflicted injury. Further dissection revealed that the wounds were healing surgical incisions that had been forced open by putrefactive tissue breakdown, swelling, and gas formation. Death was due to ischemic heart disease. Putrefaction is a common problem encountered in forensic practice that may result in considerable distortion and modification of tissues. Unusual skin lesions caused by the disruption an
