The Role of Temperature Change, Ambient Temperature, and Relative Humidity in Allergic Conjunctivitis in a US Veteran Population.

PURPOSE: Studies have implicated temperature and humidity in the pathogenesis of allergic conjunctivitis (AC), as these conditions facilitate air particulate and aeroallergen dispersion and tear film instability. Research also suggests that variation in temperature is associated with risk of asthma, but similar data are limited for AC. This study examined associations between several meteorologic conditions, including temperature variation, and AC visit risk. DESIGN: Retrospective, case-crossover study. METHODS: Data on individuals diagnosed with AC (via International Classification of Disea

Pollen shells and soluble factors play non-redundant roles in the development of allergic conjunctivitis in mice.

PURPOSE: We aimed to clarify the role of particulate allergen exposure to the conjunctiva in the development of allergic conjunctivitis. METHODS: We administered ragweed pollen suspension, pollen extract, pollen shell, particulate air pollutants, and their combinations to the mouse conjunctiva five days a week without prior sensitization. Clinical signs were scored. Histological changes, cellular infiltrations, mRNA expressions, lymph node cell recall responses, and serum immunoglobulin levels were assessed. Immune cell-depleting antibodies and ST2 knockout mice were used to investigate the c

In vitro-in vivo evaluation of tetrahydrozoline-loaded ocular in situ gels on rabbits for allergic conjunctivitis management.

Ocular allergy is one of the most common disorders of the eye surface. The conventional eye drops lack of therapeutic efficacy due to low ocular bioavailability and decreased drug residence time on eye surface. Hence, the present research work aimed to formulate, optimize, and evaluate the in situ gel for ophthalmic drug delivery. The prepared in situ gel formulations were evaluated for clarity, pH, gelling capacity, viscosity, osmolality, in vitro release study, and kinetic evaluation. ex vivo corneal permeation/penetration study using goat and in vivo studies on rabbits were also performed.

Platelet-activating factor: an inflammatory mediator in the acute phase of allergic conjunctivitis in a guinea-pig model.

The role of platelet-activating factor (PAF) as a mediator of increased conjunctival vascular permeability was investigated in a guinea-pig model of immediate hypersensitivity. Vascular permeability of the conjunctiva was determined by measuring the albumin content in lavage fluid (LF) after topical challenge with either PAF or ovalbumin. PAF produced a dose-dependent increase of the vascular permeability within minutes. Topical pretreatment with levocabastine, a potent histamine H(1)-antagonist demonstrated no effect towards the vascular permeability in response to PAF provocation. Pretreatme

Association between short-term ozone exposure and allergic conjunctivitis in China: A multi-city case-crossover study.

Short-term exposure to ozone has been linked to multiple allergic diseases, but the relationship between ozone exposure and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between short-term exposure to ozone and the risk of AC. We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study across five Chinese cities from 2014 to 2022. Daily outpatient visit records for AC were identified in five hospitals using either the diagnosis name or ICD-10 code H10.1. Data on air pollution and meteorological conditions were also collected. We first examined the city-s

Tacrolimus cationic nanoemulsion enhances ocular surface retention for the treatment of dry eye disease and allergic conjunctivitis.

Tacrolimus (TAC), as a new potent immunosuppressant, holds promise for treating immune-mediated ocular surface diseases, especially in dry eye disease (DED) and allergic conjunctivitis (AC). However, the low water solubility of TAC results in commercial formulations (Talymus®) as suspensions with limited corneal retention time and low penetration efficiency. In addition, the irritation of TAC reflexes tearing and rapid drug clearance, thereby reducing bioavailability. To address these challenges, we developed a TAC cationic nanoemulsion (TAC-CNE) with good biocompatibility. The oil-phase encap

Neuronal FcεRIα directly mediates ocular itch via IgE-immune complex in a mouse model of allergic conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Classical understanding of allergic conjunctivitis (ACJ) suggests that ocular itch results from a mast cell-dependent inflammatory process. However, treatments that target inflammatory mediators or immune cells are often unsatisfying in relieving the stubborn itch symptom. This suggests that additional mechanisms are responsible for ocular itch in ACJ. In this study, we aim to determine the role of neuronal FcεRIa in allergic ocular itch. METHODS: Calcium imaging was applied to observe the effect of IgE-immune complex in trigeminal neurons. Genomic FcεRIa knockout mice and adeno-a
