The role of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and the organum vasculosum lateral terminalis in the control of sodium appetite in male rats.

Angiotensin II (AngII) and aldosterone cooperate centrally to produce a robust sodium appetite. The intracellular signaling and circuitry that underlie this interaction remain unspecified. Male rats pretreated with both deoxycorticosterone (DOC; a synthetic precursor of aldosterone) and central AngII exhibited a marked sodium intake, as classically described. Disruption of inositol trisphosphate signaling, but not extracellular-regulated receptor kinase 1 and 2 signaling, prevented the cooperativity of DOC and AngII on sodium intake. The pattern of expression of the immediate early gene produc

Levels of cooperation increase during interactions with iterated decision-making.

Models on the evolution of cooperation typically assume that each interaction consists of a single decision. However, many real-life examples of intraspecific cooperation and interspecific mutualism consist of prolonged interactions in which partners make multiple decisions. This begs the question of how levels of cooperation change within a single interaction over its course. We model and empirically explore a case in which the game structure is asymmetric: a service provider (a cleaner fish) takes multiple foraging decisions on a "client" reef fish. If the cleaner eats a parasite it cooperat

Hydration and swelling: a theoretical investigation on the cooperativity effect of H-bonding interactions between p-hydroxy hydroxymethyl calix[4]/[5]arene and H2O by many-body interaction and density functional reactivity theory.

In order to explore the nature of the hydration and swelling of superabsorbent resin, a theoretical investigation into the cooperativity effect of the H-bonding interactions in the hydrates of four model compounds that can be regarded as the units of hydroquinone formaldehyde resin (HFR) (i.e., O-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dihydroxybenzene, methylene di-O-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dihydroxybenzene, p-hydroxy hydroxymethyl calix[4]arene and p-hydroxy hydroxymethyl calix[5]arene) was carried out by many-body interaction and density functional reactivity theory. The HFR···H2O···H2O complexes, in which the H2O···H

Emergence of contagious cooperation in community-structured networks.

Multilevel sociality, in which large communities emerge from interconnected subgroups, is a hallmark of primate societies and a central focus of the social brain hypothesis. We investigate whether such organizational forms can, on their own, foster cooperation when defection is individually optimal and the population is initially dominated by defectors. Using the spatial Prisoner's Dilemma on community-structured networks, we derive analytical conditions under which cooperation, once present, spreads contagiously across communities without altering payoffs or invoking external enforcement. The

Mechanistic insights into dimerization and cross-β sheet formation in the HIV-associated amyloidogenic peptide PAP248-286 from unbiased all-atom molecular dynamics simulations.

Semen-derived enhancer of viral infection (SEVI) fibrils, assembled from the peptide fragment PAP248-286, enhance HIV transmission by promoting viral attachment to host cells. However, the molecular basis of SEVI nucleation and early aggregation remains unclear. Here, we conducted 80 independent all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations spanning a total of 40 μs, together with 100 independent steered MD and umbrella sampling runs, to explore the dimerization and dissociation of PAP248-286. Our results indicate that peptide association and β-sheet formation are governed by a cooperative inte

Raptors bred in captivity: semen characteristics and assisted reproduction outcome in goshawk (Accipiter gentilis).

Three sexually mature goshawks reared in captivity and imprinted on humans to express reproductive behavior according to the cooperative method were studied for three consecutive breeding seasons to assess the quality of their sperm. The following parameters were analyzed: ejaculate volume and sperm concentration, motility, viability, and morphology. Ejaculate volume, sperm concentration and motility fluctuated along the reproductive season, revealing the greatest quality of the reproductive material at full springtime (i.e., April). Motility of the sperm collected in March strongly reduced wi

Anticipating critical transitions in fear-mediated mutualistic ecological system: Effects of stochasticity and early warning signals.

Predators rarely forage with fixed efficiency; they cooperate, adjust their search effort to prey availability, and impose non-consumptive effects such as fear, while prey often respond through mutualistic associations with non-prey partners. Yet how these adaptive feedbacks collectively shape ecosystem resilience, critical transitions, and collapse in mutualistic communities remains unresolved within a unified theoretical framework. To address this gap, we develop a community-level mathematical model integrating prey-non-prey mutualism, cooperative hunting, prey-dependent predator search effi

Capacity, Collaboration, and Thematic Structure in Health AI Research Over the Past Decade in the Gulf Cooperation Council: Scientometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health AI investment is accelerating across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), yet the region's health AI research output has never been systematically quantified. National research capacity is a structural precondition for the safe local development and governance of clinical AI, but no scientometric baseline exists for the 6 GCC states. OBJECTIVE: We characterized the volume, growth, collaboration structure, and thematic composition of GCC health AI research and examined whether national output aligns with an existing measure of informatics readiness. METHODS: We conducted an

Shining a light on posterior cortical atrophy.

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a clinicoradiologic syndrome characterized by progressive decline in visual processing skills, relatively intact memory and language in the early stages, and atrophy of posterior brain regions. Misdiagnosis of PCA is common, owing not only to its relative rarity and unusual and variable presentation, but also because patients frequently first seek the opinion of an ophthalmologist, who may note normal eye examinations by their usual tests but may not appreciate cortical brain dysfunction. Seeking to raise awareness of the disease, stimulate research, and pro

Cooperation versus competition in a mass emergency evacuation: a new laboratory simulation and a new theoretical model.

Virtual reality technology is argued to be suitable to the simulation study of mass evacuation behavior, because of the practical and ethical constraints in researching this field. This article describes three studies in which a new virtual reality paradigm was used, in which participants had to escape from a burning underground rail station. Study 1 was carried out in an immersion laboratory and demonstrated that collective identification in the crowd was enhanced by the (shared) threat embodied in emergency itself. In Study 2, high-identification participants were more helpful and pushed les

Rape shield laws and sexual behavior evidence: effects of consent level and women's sexual history on rape allegations.

Rape shield laws, which limit the introduction of sexual history evidence in rape trials, challenge the view that women with extensive sexual histories more frequently fabricate charges of rape than other women. The present study examined the relationship between women's actual sexual history and their reporting rape in hypothetical scenarios. Female participants (college students and a community sample, which included women working as prostitutes and topless dancers, and women living in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center) imagined themselves in dating scenarios that described either a l

Collaboration fails to promote sharing behavior but both collaborative and parallel play boost friendship in young children aged 4 to 6.

Prosocial behaviors like collaboration and sharing are key to early childhood development. This study examined how collaboration, sex, and friendship influence sharing and perceived friendship among 48 dyads (96 children) aged 4-6. Participants were recruited from primary schools and paired into same-sex or cross-sex dyads. They were randomly assigned to either a collaborative or parallel play condition involving a cheese board game. In the collaborative condition, children worked together on one board, whereas in the parallel condition, they played individually on separate boards. After the g

Cocaine use disorder in females is associated with altered social decision-making: a study with the prisoner's dilemma and the ultimatum game.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cocaine use is associated with cognitive deficits, including poor performance on neuropsychological tasks of memory, exe … caine use disorder on social decision-making was detected in both game paradigms, resulting in more cooperative behavior in the Prisoner's Dilemma and higher acceptance rate of unfair offers in the Ultimatum Game. Further studies should focus on investigating these associations to shed light on the putative biopsychosocial factors underlying the observed effects.

The arginine-vasotocin and serotonergic systems affect interspecific social behaviour of client fish in marine cleaning mutualism.

Many species engage in mutualistic relationships with other species. The physiological mechanisms that affect the course of such social interactions are little understood. In the cleaning mutualism, cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus do not always act cooperatively by eating ectoparasites, but sometimes cheat by taking bites of mucus from so-called "client" reef fish. The physiological mechanisms in these interspecific interactions, however, are little studied. Here, we focussed on three neuromodulator systems known to play important roles in intraspecific social behaviour of vertebrates to exa

Social learning promotes institutions for governing the commons.

Theoretical and empirical research highlights the role of punishment in promoting collaborative efforts. However, both the emergence and the stability of costly punishment are problematic issues. It is not clear how punishers can invade a society of defectors by social learning or natural selection, or how second-order free-riders (who contribute to the joint effort but not to the sanctions) can be prevented from drifting into a coercion-based regime and subverting cooperation. Here we compare the prevailing model of peer-punishment with pool-punishment, which consists in committing resources,

Shared music listening, emotional arousal and cognitive empathy enhance social presence in online interactions.

Music can support social bonding, especially in face-to-face interactions, but its effects in online environments with reduced social cues are less understood. This study examined how shared music listening in an audio-only online setting affects social presence, affective responses, and subsequent cooperation. In a within-subjects design, 38 individuals were assigned to music-preference-matched dyads to complete cooperative tasks after listening to music in both a socially framed shared listening condition and a solo condition. Shared listening increased social presence compared with solo lis

GABAergic modulation of human social interaction in a prisoner's dilemma model by acute administration of alprazolam.

Recent work in neuroeconomics has used game theory paradigms to examine neural systems that subserve human social interaction and decision making. Attempts to modify social interaction through pharmacological manipulation have been less common. Here we show dose-dependent modification of human social behavior in a prisoner's dilemma model after acute administration of the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-A modulating benzodiazepine alprazolam. Nine healthy adults received doses of placebo, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg alprazolam in a counterbalanced within-subject design, while completing multiple test bloc
