Salicylic acid (SA) acts as an endogenous signal for the induction of systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in plants infected by pathogens. In order to study SA biosynthesis in plants, a quantitative method using an internal standard was developed for the simultaneous measurement of SA and three of its putative bioprecursors, namely trans-cinnamic acid (CA), trans-ortho-hydroxycinnamic acid (oHCA), and benzoic acid (BA). ortho-Anisic acid (oANI) was found to be a suitable internal standard for all four compounds. It was not present as endogenous compound in cucumber leaves, no substance interfer

The ability of ethanol extract of Phyllanthus amarus root (EEPA) to decrease bilirubin level and oxidative stress in phenylhydrazine-induced neonatal jaundice in mice was investigated. Administration of phenylhydrazine (75 mg/kg b.w.) significantly elevated total and unconjugated serum bilirubin level compared to control mice. EEPA (5, 10, and 20 mg/kg b.w., oral) dose-dependently reduced the bilirubin level. EEPA treatment also upregulated hepatic CAR and CYP3A1, accounting for its ability to facilitate bilirubin clearance. A single dose of EEPA (20 mg/kg b.w.) induced higher level of bilirub

β-Carotene, lycopene, and zeaxanthin are maximally regenerated by plant phenolates from their radical cations formed during laser flash photolysis in 9:1 (v/v) chloroform/methanol for a driving force corresponding to the reorganization energy according to the Marcus theory. For β-carotene, the reorganization energy has values of 0.41 ± 0.04 and 0.40 ± 0.04 eV for the plant phenols in the presence of 1 and 2 equiv of base, respectively, at 23 °C. For a driving force lower than the reorganization energy, regeneration of the carotenoids is less efficient as is seen for m-hydroxybenzoic acid, vani

Berries are frequently implicated in outbreaks of foodborne illness due to viruses, particularly norovirus and hepatitis A virus. Compounds naturally present in berries can compromise the reliability of RT-qPCR methods, such as ISO 15216-1:2017, for detecting and quantifying viruses in foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory impact of seven phenolic compounds (ellagic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, and cyanidine-3-glucoside) found naturally in raspberries as well as batch effects due to different concentrations of inhibitors

Lipid oxidation reduces frying oil shelf life, which can be mitigated by adding antioxidants. Repeated use of frying oil can lead to the formation of harmful compounds, posing health risks for consumers. This study evaluated Kamut® wheat bran extract (KWBE) as a natural antioxidant to improve the oxidative stability of sunflower oil at frying temperatures (180 °C). KWBE was compared with TBHQ, and natural antioxidants like trans-ferulic acid, quercetin, and p-coumaric acid. Antioxidant efficacy was determined using peroxide value, conjugated dienes/trienes content, HPLC-HRMS and 1H NMR spectro

Polyphenols are a large family of natural compounds widely used in cosmetic products due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory beneficial properties and their ability to prevent UV radiation-induced oxidative stress. Since these compounds present chromophores and are applied directly to the skin, they can react with sunlight and exert phototoxic effects. The available scientific information on the phototoxic potential of these natural compounds is scarce, and thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the photoreactivity and phototoxicity of five phenolic antioxidants with documented use
