Cryosurgery has been successfully in bronchoscopy for several years. In addition to the local therapy of tumors and stenoses, cryo extraction enables the endobronchial and transbronchial extraction of large, high-quality biopsies. This is with regard to the diagnosis of diffuse lung diseases and the molecular analysis of malignant lung tumors of outstanding importance. This article explains the method and implementation of transbronchial cryobiopsy.

A female is presented with multiple longstanding hypertrophic discoid lupus erythematosus lesions resistant to topical and systemic therapy for years. She suffered severe itching and pain localized to the lesions. Treatment with cryosurgery resulted in complete healing of the lesions, leaving slightly hypopigmented soft scars. There was no tendency of relapse during a follow-up period of ten years.

We have had the opportunity to employ the CO2 surgical laser with suspension laryngoscopy and microscopic adaptations to treat a variety of laryngeal conditions over two years. Each type of laryngeal condition is discussed, and the benefits of laser management is evaluated. This type of laryngeal management is compared with other forms of treatment such as the standard surgical approaches, electrocautery, and cryosurgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Malignant degeneration of pilonidal sinuses of the sacrococcygeal region is rare but quite serious, as the tumor soon perforates the sacral fascia and becomes adherent to the irregular posterior aspect of the sacrum, making it very difficult, if not impossible, to remove all neoplastic tissue by conventional surgery, hence the high recurrence rate and poor prognosis. Actinic keratosis is a common skin disorder in elderly patients with fair complexions. It is caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. If left untreated, actinic keratosis may progress to squamous cell carcinoma. The metastatic potential and prognosis vary with the type and location of the lesion. Several approaches to treatment are available, including local destruction, excisional surgery, Mohs surgery, cryosurgery and radiotherapy.

Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic, subcutaneous mycosis, characterized by verrucous nodular lesions, usually involving the legs and mainly caused by Fonsecaea, Phialophora, and Cladophialophora spp. The characteristic finding on direct examination or biopsy specimen is the presence of fumagoid cells or Medlar bodies. Chromoblastomycosis can be refractory to medical treatment. Therapeutic options include oral itraconazole, terbinafine, or 5-fluocytosine, alone or combined with surgery or cryosurgery.

Angiofibromas are neoformations frequently occurring on the face of patients affected by tuberous sclerosis. Traditional methods of treating angiofibromas, such as curettage, dermabrasion, chemical peeling, cryosurgery, and laser are not entirely successful as they frequently lead to scarring and pigmentary change. We report the successful use of timed surgery, a novel electrosurgical procedure, in treating multiple angiofibromas. The technique is easy to use and very cost effective.

The problems arising daily in the management of many skin diseases as the removal of warts, molluscum contagiosum, etc. are often complicated simply by the fear of the pain of some treatment modalities (i.e., cryosurgery, curettage, etc.). A choice between no analgesia and analgesia by the classic percutaneous infiltration with local anaesthetics is sometimes difficult. A new lidocaine/prilocaine cream provides us an effective local anaesthesia for such treatments.

An aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign, locally aggressive bone process which frequently recurs after excochleation. Exocochleation can be extended without loss of bone tissue by making use of cryosurgery. This combined technique was used in the treatment of 5 patients, without complications. None of the patients described had a demonstrable recurrence 12-60 (average 35) months after this combined therapy.

Equinus deformity secondary to hemangioma of the calf in children can be difficult to treat. Several modes of treatment may be considered, such as radiotherapy, electrocoagulation, surgery, cryosurgery, carbon dioxide snow, silver nitrate, and sclerosing solutions. In this report, we present one case of equinus deformity caused by an extensive hemangioma in the calf muscles that was treated by an Ilizarov external fixator. The techniques offered the patient considerable relief with minimal complications.

The findings associated with diethytlstilbestrol (DES) exposure in utero are expanding rapidly. Structural abnormalities in both the cervix and uterus are well documented; in addition the authors have noted indications of an abnormal healing response in these women. Locally destructive methods such as cryosurgery, cauterization, and excision have resulted in permanent and significant physical damage. Caution is advised in attempting even minor gynecologic procedures on DES-exposed offspring.
