Exploring the Effects of Temperament on Gray Matter Volume of Frontal Cortex in Patients with Mood Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have relatively specific temperament and structural abnormalities of brain regions related to emotion and cognition. However, the effects of temperament factors on the structure of frontal and temporal cortex is still unclear. The aims of this study were to explore the differences and relationships between temperament characteristics and the gray matter volume of frontal and temporal cortex in patients with BD or MDD. METHODS: T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, demographic and cli

Pattern recognition of magnetic resonance imaging-based gray matter volume measurements classifies bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar Disorder (BD) cannot be reliably distinguished from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) until the first manic or hypomanic episode. Consequently, many patients with BD are treated with antidepressants without mood stabilizers, a strategy that is often ineffective and carries a risk of inducing a manic episode. We previously reported reduced cortical thickness in right precuneus, right caudal middle-frontal cortex and left inferior parietal cortex in BD compared with MDD. METHODS: This study extends our previous work by performing individual level classification of BD or MDD in

Bipolar disorder subtypes in children and adolescents: demographic and clinical characteristics from an Australian sample.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) phenomenology in children and adolescents remains contentious. The study investigated Australian children and adolescents with bipolar I disorder (BD-I), bipolar II disorder (BD-II), or BD not otherwise specified (BD-NOS). METHODS: Index episode demographics, symptomatology, functioning and diagnostic data were compared for 88 participants (63 female) aged 8-18 years (M=14.8, SD=2.5) meeting DSM-IV-TR criteria for BD-I (n=24), BD-II (n=13) or BD-NOS (n=51). RESULTS: BD-I had higher rates of previous episodes, psychotropic medication (compared to BD-II but no

The 7 up 7 down inventory: a 14-item measure of manic and depressive tendencies carved from the General Behavior Inventory.

The aim of this study was to develop and validate manic and depressive scales carved from the full-length General Behavior Inventory (GBI). The brief version was designed to be applicable for youths and adults and to improve separation between mania and depression dimensions. Data came from 9 studies (2 youth clinical samples, aggregate N = 738, and 7 nonclinical adult samples, aggregate N = 1,756). Items with high factor loadings on the 2 extracted dimensions of mania and depression were identified from both data sets, and final item selection was based on internal reliability criteria. Confi

Chronotype is associated with affective temperaments, clinical severity and worse treatment outcomes in bipolar disorders: results from a two-center, cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed at investigating the clinical correlates of evening chronotype in a population of subjects suffering from bipolar disorders (BD). METHODS: We assessed chronotype using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. We administered the brief Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, and San Diego, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and the Alda Scale to evaluate affective temperaments, impulsiveness, and response to mood stabilisers. We performed bivariate analyses and ran a logistic regression model to analyse clinical variables associated with evening chronoty

Is parity status associated with bipolar disorder clinical features, severity or evolution?

OBJECTIVE: To assess prospectively the association of the number of past pregnancies on the evolution of bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2 waves of the National Epidemiologic Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), a representative sample of the US population of 34,653 participants. All women diagnosed with BD were included. The number of children and BD's characteristics, i.e. BD type, age of onset, hospitalization and suicide attempt, and lifetime psychiatrics comorbidity were assessed at wave 1. Mood episode and BD's characteristics were also assessed at

Cognitive styles in hypomanic episodes of bipolar I disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive vulnerability-stress theories have recently been extended to bipolar disorder by suggesting that an activation of negative cognition might lead to depressive mood episodes and an activation of positive cognition might lead to manic mood episodes. Alternatively, the manic defense hypothesis claims that hypomanic and manic states are not the opposite of depression but rather contain similar underlying negative cognitions. The objective of this study was to further evaluate these theories by examining the cognitive patterns in bipolar I hypomania. METHODS: We compared 15 hy

Behavioural addictions in bipolar disorder patients: role of impulsivity and personality dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural addictions (BAs) can be understood as disorders characterized by repetitive occurrence of impulsive and uncontrolled behaviours. Very few studies have investigated their association with mood disorders. The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the main behavioural addictions in a sample of bipolar outpatients in euthymic phase or stabilised by medications and to investigate the role of impulsivity and temperamental and character dimensions. METHODS: One-hundred-fifty-eight Bipolar Disorder (BD) (DSM-IV) outpatients were assessed with tests design

Comparing the psychometric properties of multiple teacher report instruments as predictors of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents.

The psychometric properties of four teacher report measures and their utility for accurate diagnosis of pediatric bipolar spectrum disorders (BPSDs) were examined. Participants were 191 youth (65% male; 62% African-American; 23% diagnosed with a BPSD), age 5-18 (M=10.16, SD=3.27) years, 70% recruited from a community mental health center and 30% recruited from a mood disorders clinic. Teachers "who knew the child best" were asked to complete the Achenbach Teacher Report Form (TRF) as well as teacher versions of the General Behavior Inventory (T-GBI), the Child Mania Rating Scale (CMRS-T), and

Verbal affective expression during group and individual psychotherapy. Towards a description of therapist- and setting-related variables.

The paper deals with a comparison between verbal affective interventions by the same psychoanalyst in different therapeutic settings, individual and group therapy. Since the same therapist is involved, an exploration of interactional aspects of his therapeutic style becomes possible, taking into consideration his theoretical allegiance and his hypotheses about the structure and development of the psychotherapeutic milieu. The conformation of therapist-group and therapist-individual dyads shows a high thematic concordance across both settings, particularly with regard to separation anxiety, but

Is 'subthreshold' bipolar II disorder more difficult to differentiate from borderline personality disorder than formal bipolar II disorder?

Recent research indicates that borderline personality disorder (BPD) can be diagnostically differentiated from the bipolar disorders. However, no studies have attempted to differentiate participants with sub-threshold bipolar disorder or SubT BP (where hypomanic episodes last less than 4 days) from those with a BPD. In this study, participants were assigned a SubT BP, bipolar II disorder (BP II) or BPD diagnosis based on clinical assessment and DSM-IV criteria. Participants completed self-report measures and undertook a clinical interview which collected socio-demographic information, a mood h

The 33-item Hypomania Checklist (HCL-33): A new self-completed screening instrument for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder (MDD). This study tested the psychometric properties and the accuracy of the Chinese version of the 33-item Hypomania Checklist (HCL-33) to identify BD in Chinese clinical settings. METHODS: A total of 350 depressed patients were consecutively interviewed in a major psychiatric hospital in China. The patients' socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were recorded using standardized protocol and data collection procedures. The HCL-33 was completed by patients to detect symptoms characteristic of mania a

Morbidity risk for mood disorders in the families of borderline patients.

We analyzed the familial morbidity risk for mood disorders (MR) and the presence of a family history of alcoholism in a group of 58 patients with DSM-III borderline personality disorder (PD). The MR in the families of borderline subjects was not significantly different from that found in a control group of affective patients with other cluster II PD, or without PD. The MR in the families of borderline subjects who had never developed an affective episode was not significantly different from that found in the families of borderline PD with a history of mood disorders. Borderline subjects with m

Impact of Attachment Style and Temperament Traits on the Quality of Life of Patients with Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with manifestations that go beyond the visual manifestation, and include psychological aspects. Some mental disorders or personality traits in psoriasis patients have also been highlighted, such as a negative or problematic attitude towards life, impulsive or avoidant behavior, and lower satisfaction with life. The aim of our cross-sectional study was to explore the associations between adult attachment, temperament, and quality of life of patients with psoriasis. METHODS: A sample of 75 patients with psoriasis was evaluated with th

Persistent Non-Suicidal Self-Injury and Suicidality in Referred Adolescents: A Longitudinal Study Exploring the Role of Cyclothymic Temperament.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is deliberate harm to the body surface without suicidal intent, though it may be a predictor of suicide attempts. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that persisting and recovering NSSI may have a different longitudinal risk for suicidal ideation and behavior and that the intensity of Cyclothymic Hypersensitive Temperament (CHT) may increase this risk. Fifty-five patients (mean age 14.64 ± 1.77 years) referred for mood disorders according to the DSM-5 were consecutively recruited and followed-up for a mean of 19.79 ± 11.67 months and grouped according to the pres

Diagnostic aspects of depression.

In this review the traditional concepts of endogenous depression and modern trials of classification in operationalized diagnostic systems, especially in DSM and ICD, are critically discussed. The psychopathological and other phenomenological symptomatologies of endogenous (cyclothymic) depression within monopolar and bipolar affective psychoses and the diagnosis and differential diagnosis above all against schizophrenia, organic brain diseases and psychoreactive disorders, are described. The possibilities and limitations of operationalized classifications with regard to diagnostic reliability

Depressive, anxiety and hypomanic symptoms in schizophrenia may be driven by tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) patterning of IgA and IgM responses directed to TRYCATs.

The aim of this study was to delineate the associations between the tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) pathway and affective symptoms in schizophrenia. Towards this end we measured immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgM responses to relatively noxious TRYCATs, namely quinolinic (QA), xanthurenic (XA), picolinic (PA) acid and 3-OH-kynurenine (3HK), and generally protective TRYCATs, namely anthranilic (AA) and kynurenic (KA) acid in 80 patients with schizophrenia and 40 healthy controls. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HDRS) and anxiety (HAMA), Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) as well as the Positive
