Current approaches to mixture deconvolution of complex biological samples at times do not have the capability to resolve component contributors in DNA evidence. Additional short tandem repeat (STR) loci were sought that may improve the forensic genetic analysis of mixtures. This study presents exploratory data of a multiplex comprised of 73 highly polymorphic STRs (referred herein as the 73Plex) that were selected because of their high diversity due to sequence variation. We examined the use of enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) sequences in PCR on the DNAs of various bacteria, bacteriophage, invertebrates, fungi, plants and vertebrates and have shown that complex ERIC-PCR patterns can be readily produced from all of these target organisms. An intact condom, reputedly used during a rape, was submitted for forensic examination. Conventional biochemistry results indicated that blood found on one side of the condom may have originated from the victim. Semen from the other side of the condom was not characterizable by conventional biochemical methods. Pubic hairs recovered from the condom matched those of the victim and not those of the suspect. Testing the blood and semen from the condom by DNA analysis gave the profile of the victim from the blood and the profile of the suspect from the semen.

Three strains of Gram-negative, aerobic, yellow-pigmented, chemo-organotrophic bacteria, motile by a polar flagellum, were isolated from the rhizosphere of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) at a research field near Copenhagen, Denmark.
