[Diagnostics and treatment of lacrimal duct diseases : A structured patient-centred care concept].

BACKGROUND: The cardinal symptom of lacrimal stenosis is epiphora and a subjective high level of discomfort due to continuous dacryorrhea. … tment of congenital lacrimal stenosis follows a staged concept. Epiphora in adults without signs of dacryocystitis should be treated with dacryoendoscopy. Dacryoendoscopy is also a therapeutic option for chronic dacryocystitis, but dacryocystorhinostomy may also be required. Lacrimal trauma should be reconstructed rapidly after the incident by lacrimal intubatio …

Primary and secondary lacrimal canaliculitis: a review of literature.

Canaliculitis is an uncommon inflammation of the proximal lacrimal drainage system that is frequently misdiagnosed. It classically presents with symptoms of unilateral conjunctivitis, mucopurulent discharge, medial canthal inflammation, epiphora, and a red, pouting punctum. We summarize the literature on canaliculitis published from antiquity to the modern era and explore therapeutic options.

PURPOSE: This study reviews all reported cases of lacrimal gland chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) to identify patterns in clinical present … th a slight female predominance of 54.5%. The most common symptoms were epiphora (63.6%) and pseudo-dacryocystitis or symptoms of dacryocystitis (48.5%). A significant proportion of patients (87.9%) had a known history of CLL at presentation. Chemotherapy combined with surgery was the most frequent treatment, 48.4%, with a positive response in 93.3% of patients. …

Clinical characteristics of lacrimal drainage pathway disease-associated keratopathy.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical characteristics of 13 cases of noninfectious corneal ulceration related to lacrimal drainage pathway disease. METHODS: Medical records of 13 patients with lacrimal drainage pathway disease-associated keratopathy who were examined at Ehime University Hospital between April 2007 and December 2021 were analyzed. RESULTS: The predisposing lacrimal drainage pathway diseases for corneal ulceration were chronic dacryocystitis in seven patients and lacrimal canaliculitis in six patients. The corneal ulcers were located at the peripheral cornea in 10 patients and the p…

Prevalence and clinical characteristics of congenital dacryocystocele.

OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence, clinical findings, and outcomes in children diagnosed with congenital dacryocystocele in a well-defined … le. Eight patients (89%) had unilateral disease. Clinical findings included a cystic mass in all 9, dacryocystitis in 3 (33%), intranasal cysts in 3 (33%), and 1 (11%) each with facial cellulitis and dacryocystocele-induced astigmatism. Conservative treatment resolved the obstruction in 3 (33%), whereas the remaining 6 (67%) each underwent one surgery. Complete …

Clinically we have to differentiate the acute, fresh dacryocystitis from the chronic, recurrent dacryocystitis. Fungal, Mycobacterial, and Nocardia infections and the eye: an update.

Although relatively uncommon, fungi, atypical Mycobacteria, and Nocardia have been isolated from a variety of infections of eye including keratitis, scleritis, canaliculitis, dacryocystitis, endophthalmitis and orbital cellulites. The organisms typically cause a slowly progressive disease. The diseases caused by the organisms can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. In this manuscript we will describe updates on important aspects of the ocular infections caused by these organisms.

[Echographic diagnosis in diseases of the efferent tear ducts].

We report the results of our echographic examinations of 250 patients with diseases of the lacrimal drainage system. First, normal A- and B-scan pictures are presented. Then the echographic criteria of malformations (persistence of the valve of Hasner, dacryocystocele), dacryocystitis and its complications (fistula, membrane-formation, stenosis) are discussed. The possibility of pre- and postoperative controls with echography is stressed. Tumors of the lacrimal sac can also easily be detected.

A case of primary oncocytic adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal sac.

Lacrimal sac tumours are rare entities. Patients often present with epiphora, recurrent dacryocystitis, and/or a lacrimal sac mass. Neoplasms of the lacrimal system may conveniently be grouped into epithelial and non-epithelial types: papillomas are the most common benign epithelial tumours, while oncocytic adenocarcinomas are extremely rare. Here we report a case of primary oncocytic adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal sac in a 56-year-old man.

Endoscopy-assisted dacryocystorhinostomy in a dog.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of an endoscope to assist in performing minimally invasive dacryocystorhinostomy in a dog to successfully manage a nasolacrimal duct cyst (dacryocyst). ANIMAL STUDIED: A 4-year-old female spayed American Staffordshire Terrier with chronic epiphora and swelling ventromedial to the nasal canthus of the right eye and reverse sneezing. PROCEDURES: Computed tomography revealed a fluid-filled cystic lesion of the right nasolacrimal duct with extensive nasal extension and secondary obstructive frontal sinusitis. Conservative management of congenital dacryocystocele: resolution and complications.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical outcomes of initial conservative management in infants with congenital dacryocystocele. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 30 congenital dacryocystoceles of 28 Korean infants treated between January 2006 and December 2015. METHODS: All patients were managed conservatively with lacrimal sac massage. Clinical courses and outcomes of the patients were retrospectively reviewed, and rates of resolution of dacryocystoceles and development of dacryocystitis were analyzed. RESULTS: In 27 cases of dacryocystoceles without infection, sp…

Eradicating blinding trachoma: What is working?

Trachoma remains the leading cause of preventable corneal blindness in developing countries. The disease is contracted in early childhood by … ion as well as eyelid retraction. Lacrimal complications may include nasolacrimal-duct obstruction, dacryocystitis and canaliculitis requiring intervention. In addition to the increased risk for corneal scarring, trichiasis/entropion may further increase the risks for microbial keratitis in patients who may have unrecognized dacryocystitis and canaliculitis. Dacryocystorhinostomy in Wegener's granulomatosis.

Dacryocystorhinostomy was performed on two patients with Wegener's granulomatosis that had been quiescent for many years. Excellent results were attained, with elimination of dacryocystitis, complete relief from epiphora, and maintenance of a patent outflow tract. No wound necrosis occurred postoperatively, in contrast to a previous report in the literature. Our experience suggests that nasolacrimal duct obstruction in the setting of quiescent Wegener's granulomatosis can be treated safely and effectively with dacryocystorhinostomy.
