Children with autism often struggle with the establishment of joint attention, a skill strongly linked to language outcomes for both typically-developing and autistic children. Increasing the amount of time spent in episodes of joint attention between parents and their autistic children is a worthy goal that could improve eventual language outcomes. This paper investigates a novel research population: Deaf parents of deaf autistic children. We look to Deaf parents because of previous work documenting numerous advantages that Deaf parents have over hearing parents in their ability to gain and m

This study explores Deaf individuals' and sign language interpreters' perspectives on what it is like to work together in K-12 education. A group of 41 formerly mainstreamed Deaf individuals and interpreters offers insights into interactional dynamics (e.g., the deaf student-interpreter relationship) that influence interpreters' work, deaf students' participation and learning, and feedback practices. This study illustrates the significance of the deaf student-interpreter relationship and suggests a correlation between this relationship and deaf students' participation and positioning in mainst

To identify the causes of deafness, 354 pupils attending the Buguruni School for the Deaf in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, were studied. Of these children 205 were boys and 149 were girls, a sex ratio of 1.4:1. The onset of deafness was congenital in 36 (10.2%) and acquired in 318 (89.8%). Among the children with acquired deafness, the cause was unknown in 77 (24.2%); meningitis in 76 (23.9%), ototoxicity in 66 (20.8%), mumps in 53 (16.7%) febrile convulsions in five (1.5%), otitis media in 28 (8.8%) and measles in 13 (4.1%). Among the children with congenital deafness, only ten (27.8%) were identi…

Collapse of the auditory meatus constitutes an audiometric trap provoking a false transmission deafness. It can also permanently affect audition, whether it be primary in origin or post-mastoidectomy. The association of conservation of the stapedial reflex and transmission deafness is noticed immediately, but this is in fact compatible with an interruption in the chain by incus luxation. These notions must be known in order to avoid operation in false transmission deafness, and inversely to decide when to explore the cavity in certain post-mastoidectomy sequelae with meatal collapse.

OBJECTIVE: Deafness is the most common neurosensory defect at birth, and GJB2 (connexin 26) mutations are the most frequent genetic cause of hearing loss in many populations. The hearing loss caused by GJB2 mutations is usually congenital in onset and moderate to profound in degree. Considerable phenotypic variation has been noted however, including two anecdotal cases of apparent non penetrance at birth. The objective of this study is to document nine additional children with two pathogenic GJB2 mutations who had non penetrance of hearing loss at birth.
DESIGN: Subjects were identified throu…

Surgical biopsy specimens of the cochlear nerve from 19 patients with Menière's disease and six patients with sudden deafness were studied. The total number of myelinated nerve fibres in the transverse fascicular area of each nerve were counted and the results were correlated with the clinical and preoperative audiological data. The total number of cochlear neurons in patients with Menière's disease ranged from 5,760 to 27,722 and in patients with sudden deafness from 8,500 to 22,714. The long duration of the disease or absent speech discrimination appeared not to be connected with lower numbe…

Congenital deafness represents a major global health challenge, impacting both communication skills and social integration. The results of epidemiological observations show variable prevalence rates, influenced by genetic and environmental factors. The pathophysiological processes involve abnormalities of the auditory system resulting from genetic mutations, prenatal infections, and exposure to ototoxic substances. Diagnostic approaches are multidisciplinary, combining audiological, genetic, and imaging assessments. Management options include the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, therapi…

UNLABELLED: Partial deafness (PD) is a hearing impairment that presents with normal hearing thresholds at low frequencies (up to 1 kHz), and deep hypoacusis at high frequencies. For many years, this type of hypoacusis has not been treated with typical hearing aids because of a low level of speech understanding improvement. Since the first worldwide PD cochlear implantation conducted in 2002, this type of hearing impairment became a subject of research also in the aspect of its influence on the patient's voice.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine whether voice disorders accompanying postlingu…

This article presents a case of sudden bilateral deafness in the context of a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) infection and resultant coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). After treatment in the intensive care unit for acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute kidney failure, hearing ability had drastically changed. While hearing had been subjectively normal before the infection, deafness was now measured on the left and profound hearing loss on the right ear. The patient was treated with cochlea implants on the left and a hearing aid in the right ear. The hearin…

Objective:To explore the pathogenesis of tinnitus.Method:Retrospective analysis of 192 patients with sudden deafness was done with the characteristics.Charactier of tinnitus and the factors that may affect tinnitus.Result:The intense of tinnitus is related with sex,χ²=14.704,P<0.01,and with age increased, the difference was more significant. The intense of tinnitus has not significant difference between age group with 45 years old(χ² =6.515,P>0.05) and the classification of sudden deafness and the degree of hearing loss(χ²=7.783,P>0.05,χ²=17.374,P>0.05).Conclusion:Tinnitus was the protection mec…
