The effects of social isolation (SI) during middle age remain unclear, so we tested the hypothesis that SI would lead to an increase in impulsive choice (IC), anxiety-like behavior, and metabolic dysfunction in middle-aged rats. Male and female rats were housed individually or in groups of four with same-sex housing mates at 11 months of age. Two months later, IC behavior was assessed using a delay-discounting task and anxiety-like behavior through a novelty-suppressed feeding (NSF) task. Lastly, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity following exposure to a high-fat diet were assessed usin

Pathological gamblers (PGs) may have high levels of impulsivity, and a correlation between substance use disorders (SUDs) and impulsivity is well established. However, only a handful of studies have attempted to assess impulsivity and other impulse-spectrum traits (e.g., sensation seeking) using a variety of behavioral and self-report measures in PGs and few examined the independent impact of SUDs. We compared 30 PGs without SUD histories, 31 PGs with SUD histories and 40 control participants on self-reported impulsivity, delayed discounting, attention/memory, response inhibition, risk taking,

This study aims to investigate the roles of decision-making processes and genetics in the co-occurrence of alcohol use and suicidal thoughts/behaviors (STB) in adolescence. We used data from the ABCD® study (abcdstudy.org) and included behavioral (computerized tasks, self-report questionnaires) and genetic (polygenic scores [PGS]) measures related to cognitive (executive functions) and affective (delay-discounting, risk-taking, impulsivity) processes involved in decision-making. First, we evaluated the latent structure of decision-making in the full sample (N = 11,868) using a split-half explo

Previous investigations on the causal neural mechanisms underlying intertemporal decision making focused on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as neural substrate of cognitive control. However, little is known, about the causal contributions of further parts of the frontoparietal control network to delaying gratification, including the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Conflicting previous evidence related pre-SMA and PPC either to evidence accumulation processes, choice biases, or response caution. To disentangle between these alternatives, we combine

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with hyperactivity in dopaminergic networks. Dopaminergic hyperactivity in the basal ganglia has previously been linked to increased sensitivity to positive reinforcement and increases in choice impulsivity. In this study, we examine whether this extends to changes in temporal discounting, where impulsivity is operationalized as an increased preference for smaller-but-sooner over larger-but-later rewards. We assessed intertemporal choice in two studies including nineteen adolescents (age: mean[sd] = 14.21[±2.37], 13 male subjects) a

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is traditionally thought of as part of a system involved in motor control but recent evidence suggests that it may also play a role in other psychological processes. Here we examined the effects of STN lesions on two measures of impulsivity and found that STN lesions increased 'impulsive action' (produced behavioral disinhibition), as measured by performance on a differential reinforcement of low rates of responding task, but decreased 'impulsive choice' (impulsive decision making), as measured by a delay discounting task. In addition, amphetamine and food restric…

Previous studies have investigated how temporal discounting influences reward processing in the human brain; however, it remains unclear whether a short delay in presenting an outcome affects brain activity related to reward processing that is indexed by the two event-related potential components: the feedback error-related negativity (fERN) and P300 components. The present study used a revised simple gambling task and manipulated the waiting time before reward presentation. Behavioral data showed that participants did not respond differently between conditions; however, they reported more neg

Impulsivity has been consistently associated with pathological gambling (PG), but the diversity of definitions and measures of impulsivity h … rs were identified among 19 indices and were designated reward sensitivity, punishment sensitivity, delay discounting, and cognitive impulsivity. All 4 latent variables were positively and independently related to PG severity, albeit at a trend level for cognitive impulsivity in a combined model. These findings reveal 4 generally independent domains of impulsivity …

Alcohol misuse and dependence, and many of its accompanying psychological problems, are associated with heightened levels of impulsivity that both accelerate the development of clinically significant illness and complicate clinical outcome. This article reviews recent developments in our understanding of impulsivity as they relate to brain circuitry that might underlie these comorbid factors, focusing upon the clinical features of substance use (and dependence), bipolar disorder, and pathological gambling. Individuals who are affected by these disorders exhibit problems in several domains of i

Intertemporal choices, which involve consequences spread over time, often display a bias toward short-term rewards, which was recognized in ancient Greek philosophy as "akrasia." This bias is nowadays often modelled via hyperbolic discounting models, where intertemporal choice failings are due to an inherently irrational way of trading-off present and future rewards. Hyperbolic discounting models lead to precommitment as a suggested strategy to avoid short-term rewards, as in the Greek story of Odysseus and the sirens. We contrastingly propose a boundedly rational model of naturalistic interte

BACKGROUND: Metabolic and bariatric surgery is the most effective obesity treatment, and it has been demonstrated that an individual’s preoperative impulsivity can modulate the effects of MBS. However, it remains unclear whether MBS subsequently alters impulsive personality traits and impulsive decision-making. METHODS: A total of 66 MBS candidates were followed for 24 months after surgery. Impulsive decision-making and impulsive personality were assessed using the Delay Discounting Task and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, respectively. A mixed linear model incorporating anxiety and depressio…

Risk and time preferences are fundamental determinants of economic decision making. Although medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity has been associated with valuation across these domains, causal evidence that focal mPFC perturbation alters both risky and intertemporal choices remains limited. In this research, we applied anodal, cathodal, or sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to mPFC and administered a battery of risky lotteries and a Convex Time Budget task that jointly elicits risk and intertemporal trade-offs. Our results indicate that individuals who received cathodal s

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of reward sensitivity and impulsivity are known to be correlated with each other and alcohol use disorder (AUD) risk, but the underlying aberrant neural circuitry involved is not clearly defined. We sought to extend the current knowledge of AUD pathophysiology by studying incentive processing in persons with AUD using functional neuroimaging data.
METHODS: We utilized functional MRI data from the Human Connectome Project Database obtained during performance of a number-guessing incentive-processing task with win, loss, and neutral feedback conditions in 78 participan

Impulsivity is described as one of the main risk factors for mania. One facet of impulsivity, the inability to delay gratification, might be of special relevance, because a hypersensitivity to reward is hypothesized to be related to mania. The main aim of this study was to examine whether risk for mania is associated with deficits in the ability to delay gratification using both a behavioral and a self-report (UPPS) measure. An additional reason for choosing the UPPS was to see if prior results about an association between risk for mania and positive urgency could be replicated. Thirty-three i

BACKGROUND: A higher propensity for impulsive and risky choices has often been reported in individuals with addiction, such as alcohol use disorder (AUD). Although domains of choice impulsivity, for example, temporal discounting, have been identified to predispose the development of hazardous alcohol use, research on altered decision making as a consequence of drinking is scarce. These may be particularly pronounced during periods of progressive brain development, such as young adulthood.
METHODS: This 3-year prospective study investigated the effects of alcohol use on changes in four decisio
