In this study event related coherence of patients with Alzheimer type of dementia (AD) was analyzed by using a visual oddball paradigm as stimuli. A total of 21 mild probable AD subjects (10 untreated, 11 treated) were compared with a group of 19 healthy controls. The members of the groups had their EEG recorded from 12 electrodes by means of a visual oddball paradigm. The evoked coherence was analyzed for delta (1-3.5 Hz), theta (4-7 Hz) and alpha (8-13 Hz) frequency ranges for inter-hemispheric (F3-F4, C3-C4, T3-T4, T5-T6, P3-P4, O1-O2) and long range intra-hemispheric (F3-P3, F4-P4, F3-T5,

Despite the association between brainstem lesions and coma, a mechanistic understanding of coma pathogenesis and recovery is lacking. We developed a coma model in the rat mimicking human brainstem coma, which allowed multimodal analysis of a brainstem tegmentum lesion's effects on behavior, cortical electrophysiology, and global brain functional connectivity. After coma induction, we observed a transient period (∼1h) of unresponsiveness accompanied by cortical burst-suppression. Comatose rats then gradually regained behavioral responsiveness concurrent with emergence of delta/theta-predominant

Left ventricular assist devices are increasingly used as therapy for patients with severe congestive heart failure. These patients typically receive care in the intensive care unit when EEG monitoring is necessary. Identification of artifacts created by these devices is important for accurate EEG diagnosis, thus avoiding unnecessary therapies that may result in complications or require intubation of the patient. This report describes a case of a patient with altered mental status and history of congestive heart failure with a left ventricular assist device who developed seizures following left

BACKGROUND: The term, "triphasic wave" originally described an EEG pattern believed to be a marker for a specific stage of hepatic coma. For 4 decades, the diagnostic and prognostic specificity of the pattern remains controversial. Its pathophysiology also continues to be elusive.
METHODS: EEG recordings were obtained in three patients known or suspected to have primary generalized epilepsy. In 2 patients, the EEGs were part of long-term monitoring using simultaneous video-EEG telemetry. For the third patient, the EEG was secured only during the post-ictal unconsciousness. These 3 patients we

Within the scope of an elektroencephalographic-computertomographic comperative study carried out in 430 patients, the concurrence of secondary brain stem damage due to mass displacement and herniation processes and parroxysmal generalised slow activity in the EEG ("intermittant frontal delta rhythms", "projected discharges", "subcortical signs") in intracranial space-occupying processes were studied among others. The occurrence of the EEG pattern was independent of the presence of brain stem displacements in about 20 and 25 per cent, respectively, of the 152 patients with supratentorial space …

UNLABELLED: Febrile delirium is defined as an acute and transient confusional state with high fever. There are very few reports on febrile delirium, although fever is one of the commonest symptoms in children. We previously found a posterior slowing in the electroencephalogram (EEG) of delirious patients with fever. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the features of occipital slow waves by spectral analysis and to find a parameter associated with clinical improvement.
METHODS: Digital EEG tracings were investigated by Fourier analysis in 20 patients aged from 2 to 13 years. The fast Fou

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that EEG values match other comprehensive activities of daily living (ADL) evaluations between stroke survivors and normal controls. Various functions related to ADL were examined by means of ADL assessments (Measurement of Competence in the Elderly Living at Home, Barthel Index, Stroke Impairment Assessment Set, time needed to walk 10 metres) and biosocial synchronization (the questionnaire on biosocial rhythms of daily living). EEG was undertaken using a computer-assisted portable EEG recorder. The power spectra were computed using

Traditional scoring of sleep EEG in depressed patients shows abnormalities in sleep maintenance, sleep architecture, REM sleep, the distribution of slow wave and REM sleep during the night. Computerized analysis that comprises the period-amplitude analysis procedure and spectral analysis discloses changes in delta activity and distribution of delta activity. However, these methods of analysing EEG sleep are not able to distinguish the various concepts of depression: endogenous and non-endogenous depression, unipolar and bipolar depression, psychotic and non-psychotic depression. Transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS) is a frequency-dependent neuromodulation technique. However, its mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the effects of low-frequency (0.5, 1, 3, 5 Hz, and sham stimulation) anodal monophasic tPCS (a-tPCSM) on interhemispheric coherence, electroencephalography (EEG) band power, cognitive behaviours, and adverse effects. Seventeen healthy adults completed five sessions in a double-blinded, randomised, counterbalanced crossover design (2 mA stimulation for 20 min over M1) with a 48-hour washout period. Before and immediately after stimulation

The diagnosis of normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) can be challenging, particularly distinguishing between shunt-responsive and non-responsive patients. Overlapping clinical symptoms with aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s may hinder its diagnosis. Thus, more effective diagnostic tools are necessary To compare non-invasive techniques, such as electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial Doppler (TCD), intracranial compliance (ICC) measurement, and optical coherence tomography (OCT), with invasive procedures, such as lumbar puncture (LP) and infusion tests

BACKGROUND: During nonselective His bundle (HB) pacing, it is clinically important to confirm His bundle capture versus right ventricular septal (RVS) capture. The present study aimed to validate the hypothesis that during HB capture, left ventricular lateral wall activation time, approximated by the V6 R-wave peak time (V6 RWPT), will not be longer than the corresponding activation time during native conduction.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with permanent HB pacing were recruited; cases with abnormal His-ventricle interval or left bundle branch block were excluded. Two corresponding interva

We investigated the characteristic changes in the physiology of cybersickness when subjects were exposed to virtual reality. Sixty-one participants experienced a virtual navigation for a total of 9.5 min, and were required to detect specific virtual objects. Three questionnaires for sickness susceptibility and immersive tendency were obtained before the navigation. Sixteen electrophysiological signals were recorded before, during, and after the navigation. The severity of cybersickness experienced by participants was reported from a simulator sickness questionnaire after the navigation. The to

INTRODUCTION: The Integration of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) has allowed for a novel exploration of the brain's spatial-temporal resolution. While functional brain networks show variations in both spatial and temporal dimensions, most studies focus on fixed spatial networks that change together over time.
METHODS: In this study, for the first time, we link spatially dynamic brain networks with EEG spectral properties recorded simultaneously, which allows us to concurrently capture high spatial and temporal resolutions offered by these compleme

This study sought to determine, in patients with new-onset persistent left bundle branch block (NOP-LBBB) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), the incidence and factors associated with (i) LBBB recovery and (ii) permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) at 1-year follow-up. This was a multicenter study including 153 patients (mean age: 81 ± 5 years, 56% of women) with NOP-LBBB post-TAVI (balloon-expandable valve in 112 patients). Delta PR (ΔPR) and delta QRS (ΔQRS) were defined as the difference in PR and QRS length between baseline and hospital discharge ECG, and the relative ΔP

To clarify the electroencephalographic characteristics of mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and strokelike episodes (MELAS), the medical records and electroencephalograms of six patients with MELAS and two of their relatives with MELA (mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, and lactic acidosis, without strokelike episodes) were retrospectively reviewed. All have a point mutation in the mitochondrial DNA at nucleotide position 3243. The electroencephalograms (n = 79) were divided into four groups according to the time relation to the strokelike episode: (1) before the fi

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether caffeine affects the respiratory rate, recovery time, and brain slow-wave (theta and delta) activity during emergence from sevoflurane anaesthesia in rats.
METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 16) were randomly divided into two groups: control (saline) and caffeine (75 mg/kg). After tripolar electrode implantation, rats were placed in an anaesthesia induction chamber and brain electrocorticographic wave activity was recorded. Anaesthesia was induced with 4% sevoflurane (4 L/min O2) for 5 min, and once all the rats were asleep, sevoflurane concentration was re

OBJECTIVE: Discriminating between epileptogenic and physiological ripples in the hippocampus is important for identifying epileptogenic (EP) zones; however, distinguishing these ripples on the basis of their waveforms is difficult. We hypothesized that the nocturnal synchronization of hippocampal ripples and cortical delta power could be used to classify epileptogenic and physiological ripples in the hippocampus.
METHODS: We enrolled 38 patients with electrodes implanted in the hippocampus or parahippocampal gyrus between April 2014 and March 2023 at our institution. We divided 11 patients (1

We report on a 17-year-old girl with absence status epilepticus who developed recurrent motionless confusional state and continuous generalised 3-4 Hz rhythmic delta waves on electroencephalogram (EEG). The patient had no history of absence, myoclonus or generalised convulsion. Her seizure was resistant to a combination of antiepileptic drugs including carbamazepine. Ictal positron emission tomography using [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG-PET) revealed hypermetabolism of the bilateral thalamus and cerebellum and hypometabolism of the frontal, parietal and posterior cingulate cortices. Electroencephalogram (EEG) activity, recorded while performing an "odd ball" detection task, was compared between patients with early vascular dementia (VD), healthy young controls and healthy elderly controls performing the same task. The data were analyzed using the event-related synchronization/desynchronization (ERS/ERD) method. VD patients, compared with controls, showed decreased ERS effects in the delta frequency band (0.5-3.5Hz) of EEG after the target stimulus appeared in frontal, central and parietal regions. Similarly, elderly controls also showed a decreased ERS compared with young
