Effect of decompression on cystic lesions of the mandible: 3-dimensional volumetric analysis.

Decompression is effective in reducing both the size of cystic lesions on jaws and the associated morbidity of resection. However, quantitative measurement of reduced volume after decompression among different cystic diseases has not been fully investigated. We have retrospectively investigated the difference in reduction in volume among keratocystic odontogenic tumours (n=17), unicystic ameloblastomas (n=10), and dentigerous cysts (n=10) of the posterior mandible using 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT). Various other influential factors such as age, sex, the presence of impacted teeth, a…

Three-dimensional radiographic features of ameloblastoma and cystic lesions in the maxilla.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the radiographic features of maxillary ameloblastoma (AM), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and dentigerous cyst (DC) comparatively by using spiral CT and cone beam CT (CBCT). METHODS: Clinical records, histopathological reports, and nonenhanced spiral CT or CBCT images of 191 consecutive patients with primary maxillary AMs, OKCs, or DCs were retrospectively acquired, and radiographic features were analyzed. RESULTS: The study included 118 males and 73 females (age: 5-84 years). 72.0% of AMs and 84.3% of OKCs originated from the posterior maxilla, while 69.6% of DCs o…

A 10-Year Retrospective Analysis of 64 Cases of Cystic Lesions of the Oral and Maxillofacial Region in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Orofacial cysts are broadly divided into odontogenic and nonodontogenic types, epithelial or non-epithelial, and developmental o … iving a M:F ratio of 1.2:1. The age of the patients ranged from 4-64 years old (mean = 26.3 years). Dentigerous cyst (n = 21; 32.8%) was the most predominant lesion followed by periodontal (n = 12; 18.8%) and radicular cysts (n = 10; 15.6%). CONCLUSIONS: Cysts of the orofacial region are common in this environment and like previous studies from Nigeria odontogeni …

From Impaction to Eruption, Simplified Management of Two Teeth Impacted by a Large Mandibular Cyst: A Clinical Case Report.

Background/Objectives: Dentigerous cysts are odontogenic cysts enclosing the crown of an unerupted, developing tooth, therefore disrupting the normal eruption process, leading to tooth impaction. This case report describes the successful multidisciplinary management of a large mandibular clinicoradiographic dentigerous cyst associated with two impacted permanent teeth, highlighting the potential for spontaneous tooth eruption following conservative surgical treatment. Methods: A healthy 14-year-old male presented with a large mandibular cyst associated with two unerupted permanent teeth. Clini…

Maxillary Cystic Ameloblastic Fibroma in an 8-Year-Old Girl: A Case Report Featuring a Rare Histological Variant.

Objective: This report is aimed at outlining the unusual cystic variant of ameloblastic fibroma to facilitate its demarcation from other odontogenic lesions, including dentigerous cysts and cystic ameloblastomas. Case Report: An 8-year-old girl with no significant medical history presented to the oral surgery department with a painless swelling in the right maxillary region, first noticed 1 month ago, which gradually increased in size, accompanied by monocortical expansion of the buccal cortex. Cone beam computed tomography revealed a well-demarcated unilocular low-density lesion in the right …

Altered expression of cell-cell adhesion molecules β-catenin/E-cadherin and related Wnt-signaling pathway in sporadic and syndromal keratocystic odontogenic tumors.

Differential diagnosis of the keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) still represents a challenging problem especially if compared with the dentigerous cyst, which is similar in clinical and radiological course. Histological assessment of this entity may therefore draw crucial attention since various radical procedures are recommended for such lesions in contrast to dentigerous cysts. Since recent reports could prove the involvement of wingless(Wnt)-signaling pathway and β-catenin in the pathogenesis of many odontogenic and neoplastic lesions indicating impairment of cell-cell adhesion, we inve…

Maxillary unicystic ameloblastoma: a rare presentation.

Unicystic ameloblastoma (UAM), a rare variant of ameloblastoma, is an odontogenic epithelial neoplasm typically appearing in the mandible. We report an extremely rare case of maxillary UAM with an impacted canine and supernumerary tooth. The patient was a woman in her late 30s who presented with a slight expansion of the left anterior maxilla due to a cystic lesion with impacted teeth. Under a clinical diagnosis of dentigerous cyst, the cystic lesion was completely enucleated by extracting the impacted teeth. Based on the clinical features and pathological findings, the final diagnosis was int…

Traumatic infantile unicystic ameloblastoma of posterior maxilla- A case report.

Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) arising from a dentigerous cyst often leads to misinterpretation and undertreatment because of its higher recurrent potential, although it has a better prognosis than that of a solid or multicystic variant. This case is unique as UAs commonly develop in the posterior mandible and second decade of life. Here we report a case of 12-month-old infant with tumorous growth of the maxilla, making it difficult to diagnose because of varied clinical presentation. It also poses a treatment dilemma as the mural type of UA is notorious for recurring often requiring aggressive …

Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor associated with other lesions: case report with cone-beam computed tomography findings.

The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) simultaneously occurring with other lesions at different locations in the same patient is rare. We report a patient with CCOT associated with an odontoma, a supernumerary tooth, and a dentigerous cyst simultaneously occurring in the maxilla. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images showed a well-defined expansile lesion with internal calcification, high-density masses surrounded by low-density area, and a supernumerary tooth at the anterior maxilla. Posterolaterally to these lesions, an embedded canine with pericoronal radiolucency was detected…

The aggressive nature of the odontogenic keratocyst: is it a benign cystic neoplasm? Part 3. Immunocytochemistry of cytokeratin and other epithelial cell markers.

Numerous studies of keratin expression by the more common odontogenic cysts were done to determine whether patterns of cytokeratin staining could provide accurate diagnostic markers for the different varieties; to see whether comparative studies with oral mucosa and developing odontogenic epithelium could explain the pathogenesis of the cysts; and whether cytokeratin patterns could provide clues in elucidating the aggressive nature of the OKC. This review was a complex task with a range of at least 19 different cytokeratins being studied and also a broad range of antibodies in use for the same

Paradental cyst with hyaline ring granuloma masquerading as pericoronitis.

Paradental cyst is an odontogenic cyst associated with pericoronitis in partly erupted mandibular third molars. It is an inflammatory cyst common among the mandibular molars. The cyst is most commonly seen on the distal or distobuccal aspect of the third molars. The angle of tooth and food impaction has been postulated to be responsible for the development of the cyst in third molars. The source of the epithelium has been reported as reduced enamel epithelium. The paradental cyst is frequently misdiagnosed as a radicular cyst or dentigerous cyst. We report a case of paradental cyst in a patien…

Comprehensive Management of Impacted Teeth in Cystic Lesions of the Jaws.

Cystic lesions in the jaws are frequently associated with impacted teeth, and include dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, unicystic ameloblastoma and adenoid odontogenic tumours. The most common treatment modality is enucleation of cysts with removal of the impacted tooth. Marsupialisation is a more conservative treatment modality than enucleation and is considered the first-line treatment, especially in the initial management of benign cystic lesions during the mixed dentition period. Depending on the size of the lesion, the position of the impacted tooth and the available space, the …

A proteomics study to explore differential proteins associated with the pathogenesis of ameloblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Reports on the proteomic studies of ameloblastoma and other common odontogenic lesions are limited. We thus explored the differential proteins among ameloblastoma, odontogenic keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, and normal gingival tissue using proteomics and identified hub proteins involved in the local aggressiveness and recurrence of ameloblastoma. METHODS: Samples were obtained from 14 patients with ameloblastoma, 6 with odontogenic keratocyst, 9 with a dentigerous cyst, and 5 with normal gingival tissue. Proteins were then extracted, purified, quantified, and analysed using Easy-nL…
