Role of lasers in restorative dentistry: a review and update.

OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to summarize the most frequent clinical applications of lasers in restorative dentistry and provide the most recent updates. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and WoS was conducted regarding the use of lasers in restorative dentistry. Many studies examined lasers' effectiveness in achieving clinically acceptable cavity preparation, removing caries, caries diagnosis, enhancing the bonding strength of direct and indirect restorations, tooth whitening, and treating dentin hypersensitivity. RESULTS: Lasers were found to effectively prepare cavities …

Contemporary Use of Polymers in Dentistry: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review examines contemporary applications of polymeric materials in dentistry from 2020 to 2025, spanning prosthodontics, restorative dentistry, orthodontics, endodontics, implantology, diagnostics, and emerging technologies. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase for peer reviewed English language articles and synthesized evidence on polymer classes, processing routes, mechanical and chemical behavior, and clinical performance. Approximately 116 articles were included. Polymers remain central to clinical practice: poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is still widely …

[PLGA nanoparticles - bioengineering solutions in medicine and dentistry].

Presented to analyze the accumulated scientific information on the possibilities and use in dentistry of poly-lactic acid glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles, which act as carriers of various drugs, ensuring their delivery to the foci of inflammation, tumor processes or into the depths of the microbial biofilm. Such nanostructured complexes make it possible to increase the absorption of general drugs through the oral mucosa, prevent the formation of microbial biofilms, and prevent and treat dental caries, its complications, and periodontal inflammatory diseases. Targeted delivery and targeted u…

Pathophysiology of referred pain in dentistry: a case report.

This article presents the clinical case of a 42-year-old woman with chronic pain in her left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and limited mouth opening. The patient also reported anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Cone beam computed tomography revealed impacted maxillary third molars and hypertrophy of the nasal turbinates. An auriculotemporal nerve block performed with 2% lidocaine decreased the pain but did not eliminate it, suggesting that the TMJ was not the primary source of the patient's pain. At a follow-up appointment 24 hours after the nerve block, infiltration anesthesia was administered

Use of amniotic membranes in dentistry - literature review.

The amniotic membrane, which lacks blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves, is a thin membrane with anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties. In the field of dentistry, it is primarily employed as a dressing following the removal of malignant or pre-malignant lesions, with the objective of ensuring haemostasis and the absence of allergic reactions. Furthermore, it is employed in the treatment of oro-auricular junctions, cleft palates and in guided bone regeneration, due to the presence of mesenchymal cells. In vestibuloplasty, it has been demonstrated to enhance vestibular deepening,…

"Characterization of Brazilian Dentistry in Dental Sleep Medicine".

This study aims to characterize dentists in Brazil who understand and practice Sleep Dentistry (SD), focusing on diagnosing and managing sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD), such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. Our goal is to identify gaps in their training and emphasize the need to integrate dental sleep into the Brazilian system of education. We conducted a descriptive study with 161 Brazilian sleep dentists. Participants answered questionnaires with demographics, educational background, clinical experience, and perspectives on recognizing SD as a specialty. Our findings show th…

Occupational exposures to chemicals in dentistry: A scoping review.

The dental workforce comprises a variety of professions, most of which are predominantly occupied by women. Dental workers can be exposed to numerous toxic chemicals such as mercury, methacrylate polymers, and silica. This scoping review aims to synthesize the scientific literature on quantified chemical exposures and to identify research gaps in occupational chemical hazards faced by dental professionals. This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute approach and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, using three concepts to search PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science: workers, dental care, and chemicals. S

Harnessing strontium in regenerative dentistry: progress and perspectives.

Strontium (Sr), an alkaline earth element characterized by its unique bioactivity, has garnered significant interest in the field of oral regenerative medicine. This interest is primarily due to its inherent presence in bone tissues, particularly in growth plates and trabeculae, and its ability to influence bone metabolism through the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). Various signaling pathways, including MAPK/ERK1/2 and Wnt/NFATc, are involved in the mechanisms behind these effects. Strontium-doped biomaterials progressively release Sr2+ ions, which impart a variety of biological effects, amon

Training Program for the Use of Magnification Loupes in Dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: Although magnification loupes offer well-documented advantages, their initial adaptation can be challenging, often deterring widespread adoption. Without sufficient training during this critical period, students may feel inadequately prepared, limiting their ability to benefit from loupes and contributing to reluctance in their use. To address this issue, this study designed and evaluated a training program focused on the use of Galilean loupes, aiming to enhance the ergonomic posture of dental students. METHODS: Thirty-one second-year dental students were divided into an experi

Applications of selected polysaccharides and proteins in dentistry: A review.

In the last ten years, remarkable characteristics and a variety of functionalities have been created in biopolymeric materials for clinical dental applications. This review gives an overview of current knowledge of natural biopolymers (biological macromolecules) in terms of structural, functional, and property interactions. Natural biopolymers such as polysaccharides (chitosan, bacterial cellulose, hyaluronic acid, and alginate) and polypeptides (collagen and silk fibroin) have been discussed for dental uses. These biopolymers exhibit excellent properties alone and when employed with other com

[Deaf people and sign language: an enigma in dentistry].

Sign language is the main means of communication for deaf people; consists of the combination of manual, body and facial movements with specific meanings. Among the main barriers faced by this community are the lack of communication, shortage of health services, added to the inexperience and lack of knowledge of sign language by the health professional. This article aims to raise awareness of the importance and need of sign language in dental clinical care and professional training, as well as strategies, tools and recommendations for better care for deaf people. Exploring the properties of formocresol in dentistry-a comprehensive review.

Due to concerns about formocresol's mutagenic and genotoxic potential, its use as a pulpotomy medication is currently debatable. The current paper aimed to review the properties of formocresol and concerns regarding its safety as a pulpotomy medicament for primary teeth. With reference to the context of the recently published literature, the alternatives to formocresol are discussed, together with their benefits and drawbacks. A literature search was conducted using multiple databases comprising of MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science. The terms used for the search were "formocreso

Anatomy in dentistry: From the beginnings to contemporary reality.

The history of dentistry and medicine has a deep and ancient bond with the history of anatomy. From the ancient times to the present, the study of the human body represents the basis for research and clinical therapy. The historical contribution of anatomists to the development of dental medicine also helped in its characterization as an integrated but special and independent branch of medicine. From Galen's studies on animals to the discoveries of dental hard tissues characteristics using a microscope, this paper provides a brief literature review of how anatomy broadly contributed to the dev…
