This article is an overview of the treatment possibilities and the role of the orthodontist in the management of patients with cleft palate. Orthodontic intervention and treatment may be indicated soon after birth (infant orthopedics), in the deciduous, mixed, and permanent dentitions and also in the adult patient. This article focuses primarily on decision-making and procedural steps performed by the orthodontist during the permanent dentition stage. The need for coordinated interaction with other team members is emphasized.

OBJECTIVE: Early orthodontic treatment with cost reimbursement within the framework of the German statutory health insurance (GKV) is only possible for a strictly defined malocclusion group as defined by the orthodontic indication groups (KIG). It is not yet clear whether the application of the KIG criteria and corresponding successful early orthodontic interventions result in no or significantly less need for treatment in the late mixed dentition or in the permanent dentition. This study therefore investigated short-term intervention stability from a 10-year-period.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a high-precision, automated model using deep learning for the fine classification and three-dimensional (3D) segmentation of mixed dentition in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.
METHODS: A high-precision, automated deep learning model was built based on modified nnU-Net and U-Net networks and was used to classify and segment mixed dentition. It was trained on a series of 336 CBCT scans and tested using 120 mixed dentition CBCT scans from three centers and 143 permanent dentition CBCT scans from a public dataset. The diagnostic performance of the model was as

This article describes a new case of a rare syndrome including enamel agenesis of the primary and permanent dentition, delayed or absent eruption of the permanent dentition, coronal intra-alveolar resorption and gingival enlargement. Renal symptoms include medullary nephrocalcinosis without any apparent cause, and evolution to a renal failure. The early diagnosis provided by the oral symptoms leads to a better renal prognosis. As a consequence, pediatric dentists should be aware of this pathology.

Supernumerary teeth which occur both in the primary and the permanent dentition are seen more frequently in the permanent dentition causing a variety of pathological disturbances. Presented herewith is a case report of a patient with a mesiodens which had caused flaring of the maxillary central incisors and impeded normal eruption of the maxillary lateral incisors. Extraction of the mesiodens was carried out; subsequently followed by the space closure utilizing simple fixed orthodontic therapy.

The main objectives of diagnosis and treatment of traumatic injuries affecting children in the primary dentition are pain management and prevention of damage to the developing tooth germ. Inappropriate approaches to treating dental trauma can cause more damage than the trauma itself; for this reason, minimal intervention presents a low risk of sequelae development in the permanent successor teeth. This case describes a five-year follow-up of acute trauma in the primary dentition. Conservative management with minimal intervention of the traumatized teeth was adopted. The traumatized teeth were

AIM: An association between tooth agenesis and taurodontism has been suggested. To verify if tooth agenesis and taurodontism are associated within families and specific patterns of tooth agenesis, this study aims to compare the frequency of taurodontism in patients with nonsyndromic familial tooth agenesis, their first and second-degree relatives with complete permanent dentition and a control group of unrelated healthy individuals with complete permanent dentition.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of patients with nonsyndromic familial tooth agenesis, their first and second-degre

Developmental studies of the Recent Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, show that this species has two sets of functional tooth-bearing bones in the lower jaw of young hatchlings. These coincide with an early stage in the life history when the fish is strictly carnivorous. In N. forsteri, a paired tooth-bearing dentary and an unpaired symphyseal bone and tooth develop slightly later than the permanent vomerine, prearticular, and pterygopalatine tooth plates, which appear at stage 44 of development, and erupt with the permanent dentition between stages 46 and 48, when the hatchling firs

At the University of the Pacific, mixed dentition treatment is an integral part in the graduate program in orthodontics. One patient had a severe skeletal ANB discrepancy of 7 degrees, lower incisors crowding, and 12 mm of overjet. He was considered an excellent candidate for Phase I treatment to reduce the severity of the problem. It is our philosophy to take advantage of the growth potential in a patient by initiating Phase I treatment between the ages of 7 and 9 years, depending on the eruption of the permanent first molars and incisors and the severity of the malocclusion. We use leeway sp

A case of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome that has been managed successfully for six years is reported. Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome is a rare form of early onset periodontitis that occurs at a rate of 1-3 per million. Diagnostic features include palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis and rapid periodontal destruction. Although the etiology of this syndrome is unknown, current theories on the nature of the underlying defect fall into three main categories: anatomical, bacterial and host response. Historically, Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome was thought to lead to the inevitable loss of both the primary and permanent

An extra tooth causing numerical excess in dentition is described as supernumerary tooth, and the resultant condition is termed as hyperdontia. Hyperdontia is more commonly seen in the permanent dentition than primary one. Supernumerary tooth which resembles tooth shape and supplements for occlusion is called as supplemental tooth. We present a case with supplemental tooth in primary dentition.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts are characterized by a frequent occurrence of dental anomalies. Numerous studies demonstrate the high prevalence of dental aplasia, supernumerary teeth, and hypoplastic teeth in patients with cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P), yet the therapeutic consequences are rarely discussed. This study explores prevalence, localization, and association between primary and secondary dentition in a large European collective and begins to evaluate the significance of dental anomalies in the therapeutic course of patients with CL/P.
METHODS: The medical reports of 1070

Background Developmental defects of enamel (DDE) are disturbances that occur during amelogenesis and may affect the quantity or quality of enamel. These defects may predispose affected teeth to dental sensitivity, caries, and esthetic concerns. Limited epidemiological data are available regarding the prevalence of DDE among Kashmiri children. Objective This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of DDE among children aged 3-12 years in the Kashmiri population using the modified DDE Index. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among childre

AIM: To report a rare case of arrested root formation of permanent incisors in a young boy with mixed dentition and its management.
BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury to a primary tooth may damage the underlying permanent tooth germ and affect its development. The extent of the malformation depends upon the developmental stage of the permanent tooth and the intensity of trauma. Discoloration and hypoplasia of the crown, dilaceration, root angulation and disturbances in eruption are commonly seen developmental disturbances following trauma. However, partial or complete arrest of root formation is a

Emergence data on the 20 deciduous teeth and the first 29 permanent teeth were collected from 212 randomly selected urban Swedish children who were followed from birth to 18 years of age. The sex difference in the emergence of the deciduous teeth is less than one month, which is not statistically significant. Boys are consistently ahead of girls until the 17th deciduous tooth. From the 17th deciduous tooth on through most of the permanent dentition, girls are consistently ahead of boys. In the permanent dentition the sex difference ranges from 3 MO to 11 MO; these differences are statistically
